Summer Games: Wednesday, The Park [morning]

"Good morning!" Anakin yelled into the megaphone from the small platform he had erected in the park. "Students, please listen for your names and find your partner or partners as your name is called: Sidon and Aloy; Jason and Rey; Bobby and Paris; Ahsoka and Uma; Theron and Peridot; Astrid and Norman; Tip, Sabine and Beaker."

Once the students were in place, Anakin held up a sheaf of paper in his hand. "Today, with the help of the proprietors in town, we're conducting a Scavenger Hunt. You have a very long list: You must find 15 of the items from that list and either take a picture or video of yourselves completing the tasks. Whoever completes their 15 in the shortest amount of time will win the coveted, terrifying, singing fish," he said, holding his hand out for it to fly to him. It was still shrieking Sabotage as it flew, but now it also rained confetti on anyone close enough to be in its flight path. As Anakin held it, it treated the entire group to holographic footage of Theron being chased by a Roomba.

You're welcome, Theron.

"Right," Anakin said slowly. "Someone come take this thing from me as quickly as possible. On your marks, get set, go."

As if it wasn't enough of a thrill for Astrid that Norman had gone along with her suggestion on where to go to first, she was finally ducking into the flower shop she'd passed by so many times without going in, trying to subtly peer through the window whenever she passed it by. And once inside, her heart jumped a little at all the bright colors and interesting shapes, drawing in her eye, making her fingers twitch to touch them or sketch them or bury her face in their scents. She closed her eyes, just a moment, breathing it in, thinking of sleeping underneath jacaranda on warm summer nights, of watching petals fall on paper and tracing around the shapes of their bodies like chalk around victims in a murder scene.

She wondered if Norman cared about winning this one. She could probably stay here all day.

But there were here to do something, and she opened her eyes with a wistful sigh and turned toward her partner with a faint smile. "Anything in particular you'd like to use?"

Norman didn't seem to be in any sort of hurry. He'd already won one of these things, after all, and that fish was...

... Terrifying. The fish was terrifying. And besides, the flowers were actually kind of nice.

"I guess roses are a little too obvious, huh? Maybe there are some neat lilies or something? They come in all kinds of colors, right? What sort of flowers do you like?"

"Hi." Peter waved from behind the counter. "Do you two want help, or should I just leave you to it?"

"Way too obvious," Astrid agreed with emphasis, shaking her head a little. "Besides, the thorns are tricky and they're usually really top heavy, you know?"

She went ahead and moved further into the shop, her hand out slightly to brush against the plants as she moved.

"I wonder if they have oleander," she mused. "They're poisonous, but they're pretty."

And maybe, just maybe, she took her inspiration from a very particular place.

"They could go well with lilies, too, especially Stagazers or Asiatic..."

"I'm not sure I know what that is," Norman admitted, looking around. "But if you find it, I'd love to see it. I'm not really well-versed in flowers..."

His hobbies included dead people, undead people, dead animals, and biking.

"They grow everywhere back home," Astrid said, her voice filled with wistful longing. "It's easily one of the things I miss the most, just opening my window to a dozen different flowers."

This, though, this was even better that back home, even better than Mexico.

"Oh! Here's some!" she said as she turned a corner. "See? I've always liked white ones myself."

"Oh!" Norman perked up a little as he looked them over. "Yeah, you know... those would go with anything, wouldn't they? Maybe against something dark?"

He really wasn't an artist, but he did have some grasp of aesthetic. Or at least some grasp of contrast. Possibly because he watched so many old black and white zombie movies.
