Summer Camp Wednesday [The Park]

Today's beautiful weather was made for sitting outside and doing craft projects, which was good, because that's what you were doing. A number of tables were set up around the park, each filled with macrame and micro macrame--which was a thing Anakin had learned this week-- supplies: cording of various colors, beads, crystals, and other bits of shiny things (though the supplies were getting depleted as the squirrels kept stealing them), and a few macrame patterns mostly for dresses and other clothing-like items.

Even more worryingly, there was a runway set out down the middle of the area, along with two chairs set aside for judges.

"Right!" Anakin said, yelling into his bullhorn again. "Today you will be working in teams under a one-hour time limit to create a piece of macrame fashionwear. It does not have to be very large--it's not going to be for any of you to wear. The dimensions are provided at your stations, and the models will be arriving shortly."

Anyone have a bad feeling about that? Good.

"This week's winners will win the highly coveted Billy the Bass singing fish--" he glanced around. "Where'd that kriffing thing get off to?" He raised his hand and the fish, propelled by its own power and shrieking Sabatoge flew in from...somewhere.

"...that was odd." He glared at the assembled crowd. "Please refrain from stealing the fish until after the winner is determined this week. Listen carefully for your name and then join your team. You will have an hour to learn how to macrame and then your models will arrive and parade down the catwalk. The winners will be determined by our fashion experts Sparkle and Brooke. Your teams are as follows:

Paris, Seivarden, and Astrid
Peter, Sabine, and Tip
Jason, Ahsoka, and Norman
Verity, Aphra, and Rosa
Bobby, Mitsutada, and Hardison
Liam, Miguel, and Uma
Hannibal, Cristina, and Rufus
Steve, Yang, and Sidon
Amaya, Kitty, and Beaker
Hera, Kanan, and Breq
Jono, Kathy, and Rey
Eliot and Ino

You may begin...now."

And a giant glowing timer that Anakin had gotten from...somewhere... began ticking down the hour.

... Well, it looked like Jono was going to actually be participating this week. Which was... good, probably? He was, at least, fairly deft when it came to tying knots.

For reasons that he wasn't getting into, and also, shut up.

He'd wrapped his face mostly just to keep the flames out of his eyes so he could see what he was doing, and he was squinting at those dimensions, hoping that they weren't for exactly what he suspected they were for.

"I have no idea what I'm doing," Rey said helpfully.

Maybe this was something she'd randomly be good at?

...Nope!

//It's easy,// Jono offered. //You tie knots in rope in order to make things. I can pull up instructions, if you like.//

He'd never really done this, either. He'd been born in the seventies, but that didn't mean he was going to go out of his way to re-live any of them.

"Thats it? Oh, I can tie knots," she said, a little relieved. "But I'm not sure I can tie knots to make clothes."

//And that's half the challenge,// Jono replied, keeping his tone light. //I, ah, I imagine the other half of the challenge is going to be getting whatever we make onto the model.//

He really, really didn't trust those measurements at all.

"Why do I have a bad feeling about this?" Rey asked.

"Because you've been here long enough to know that nothing in these dimensions can be good?" Kathy suggested, coming up with a bit more string just in case they needed it. "So, I sorta learned how to do this at the Y camp about ten years ago, but I don't really remember much."

//Well, that's probably still better than Google,// Jono mused, glancing at the string she'd brought. //Want to run us through a few of the basics?//

"Well, the most ambitious thing I ever made was a wall hanging," Kathy said, awkward. "But I guess four of those could kind of make a shirt or a dress if we attached them? Uhh, we need dowels or something to start with. To hang our macrame off of."

Oh god oh god there were, like, ten different knots involved with this and why couldn't she remember any of them?

"It's not just tying knots?" Rey asked.

Off to a good start!

//It's different kinds of knots, too, I know that much,// Jono mused, glancing at Kathy again. //How many of those do you remember, luv?//

"Well, we start off with some kind of, umm, bird knot," Kathy said, able to demonstrate a reverse lark's head better than she could name it. We get a bunch of these, all across the dowel. The more knots, the wider the design." For the measurements they were given, they wouldn't need all that many, a fact that Kathy mistrusted immensely. "Square knots are used a lot. And so are half-knots, I think. Those make spirals, like friendship bracelets."

She'd made a bunch of those for Pride last year which was why she remembered them.

"A couple others I can probably remember with some practice, but I'll never be able to tell you their names."
