Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather had turned out absolutely lovely for today's picnic, through no interference of dark magic (as far as anyone knew). The bonfire had been scrapped for the season, replaced with more blue and gold chairs and tables for people to sit at. The usual buffet was out, and this time there were plates and to-go containers, because really, no one should have to resort to the unsanitary measure of pocket food in the 21st century.

Happy picnic day, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Mostly loud and all their neighbors would hate them.

"I am supposed to have experiences here."

So that was good, right? Right.

Probably good, anyway!

"What kind of experiences?"

"I am meant to socialize in a normal fashion," she said with a huff. "I think I socialize just fine."

Yeah, this semi-feral alien was a total expert at interactions.

"You seem to be off to a pretty good start," Norman offered. Because he hadn't really had more than five minutes to get to know her or anything, probably. "What sort of things do you like to do for fun?"

So that maybe he could help her with the socializing?

Okay, that was a word she didn't use often. At all.

"I have music. I was told it was classical."

"Music's good," Norman replied, smiling a little. "Classical, huh? What's your favorite?"

He was expecting, like, Chopin, here. Silly Norman.

"Public Enemy is very good. The beats in their music is good to work to." Yep. Public Enemy was classic music. "I was promised that I would be able to find more while here."

Norman blinked at that. And blinked again.

"Yeah, pretty much all of the music they play here is like that. There are whole radio stations dedicated to it." He paused. "What year are you from, exactly?"

"Montgomery Scotty said that it was 2263 on your planet." Which didn't mean much to her, but she'd retained that information!

"That would explain why our music is classical to you," Norman noted. "It's over two centuries earlier, here."

He really shouldn't have been so surprised.

She paused, thinking that over. "Is this normal?"

Because maybe it was. Maybe this was just what weird humans who rescued you did.

"Only on this one particular island, I think," Norman offered with a shrug. "It's definitely not normal back home, anyway."

Jaylah narrowed her eyes at him to decide whether or not he was telling the truth about that. Because time travel without warning wasn't cool.

Unless there were whales.

Well, they were on an island...

Norman kind of just blinked back at her.

...

Oh boy.

Yeah, that staring wasn't stopping anytime soon. Because she didn't have any response to the time travel until she had contacted James T and Montgomery Scotty about this bullshit.

Also because he looked like a spooked animal.

Norman glanced to the side for a moment, and then glanced back, and, after discerning that there wasn't exactly an easy escape route here, he offered, "So, do you want directions to the music store in town?"

OLIVE BRANCH. OLIVE BRANCH FOR THE FERAL PALE GIRL.

"That would be acceptable." He could stay.

Norman was going to resume breathing again.

"Okay," he replied. "It's not far from here at all..."

He rattled off the directions ~~handwavily because the mun was too lazy to rummage for the map~~ and then finished with, "and they accept the American dollar as payment, though there's a bank in town that you can exchange any money you might have at, if you need to."

... Yeah, all that money she totally had floating around.

Yeeeeeah. About that.

"Money?"

"Oh boy."

Norman winced a little.

"They don't have that where you're from, huh? It's something that you can exchange for goods and services. Around here, usually it's paper bills or metal coins. Like..." He rummaged in his pocket for a moment, and then surfaced with a few dollar bills and a couple of bucks in change. "Like this stuff?"

It was probably a good thing she had a human roommate to go with her rock sibling.

"Can I not simply offer them repairs in exchange for these goods and services?" Yes, a barter system was way more up her alley. That and living in the Star Trek universe.

"I mean... you can offer," Norman hedged. "I don't know if they'll take you up on it. Then again, maybe they'll have a free shift and you can take a job there for music and a few dollars to spend on the side?"

Mondays and Saturdays were free, Jaylah. Just sayin'.

Jono was fixin' for some non-stop Beastie Boys.

"I will see about this."

Jono would allow this.

"Great," Norman replied, smiling faintly. "And in the meantime, if you do see anything you like, I can probably at least lend you some money. A lot of the restaurants in town probably aren't going to serve you food without it, either."
