Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather had turned out absolutely lovely for today's picnic, through no interference of dark magic (as far as anyone knew). The bonfire had been scrapped for the season, replaced with more blue and gold chairs and tables for people to sit at. The usual buffet was out, and this time there were plates and to-go containers, because really, no one should have to resort to the unsanitary measure of pocket food in the 21st century.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kanan was sidling up to Kitty with two water bottles in hand, offering one to her.

"If I have to smile and look responsible for much longer," he drawled, "my face is going to fall off. How's the picnic going for you?"

"Thank you," she said, taking the bottle. "It's fine. No teaching buddy this time, and I don't recognize anyone as being from an alternate universe from me. How about you?"

"I wound up with both of those things," Kanan said with a slight wince as he opened his own bottle. "I got that Liam guy as a teaching buddy. You know, from down at the station."

The station that was full of troopers. He was never going to quite get over those.

"And one of the students I drove in this morning is clearly from... either the same universe or a similar one from me. She's wearing Mandalorian gear and everything. Not sure what to make of her yet."

"Liam's a good guy, at least," Kitty said. "What's Mandalorian gear?"

"Body armor," Kanan clarified. "The armor the troopers at the station wear is similar to it, sort of. We've got a long and storied history of people dressed head to toe in plating like that. Hers is a bit more colorful than I've ever seen before, but still looks to be fairly traditional otherwise."

He didn't have a great knowledge of Mandalorian armor techniques, but Sabine's seemed... standard, if well decorated?

"It worries me that you have a long and storied history of people needing full-on armor," Kitty decided.

"We also have people here from different eras," Kanan reminded her, "all of which seem to involve people with powers and laser swords. It's a dangerous galaxy even in those occasional moments of peace."

"Point taken," she nodded. "Is this student someone you'll actually have to deal with?"

In Kitty's experience, that had always been about 50/50.

"Well, out of the batch of new students, it looks like my class has four out of five of them," Kanan noted. "So, odds are..."

He shrugged.

"Probably. I'm thinking probably."

Kanan, you had no idea.

"Maybe you'll get lucky and won't have any problems with her," Kitty shrugged.

"I guess a guy can hope," Kanan mused, though it was accompanied by a grimace. "Things are tricky when it comes to Mandalorians. At least in my time."

In a few times, really. They hadn't exactly always gotten along with the Jedi, after all.

"But who knows when she's even from?"

"Probably a time that's least convenient to you."

Kitty was helpful.

"To me, personally," Kanan agreed. "Fandom's like that, isn't it?"

Hell, he didn't even sound all that put out over it.

Well. Maybe a little bit. He had disassembled his lightsaber and stashed it away again the moment he'd realized that the island had a Mandalorian running around on it, and it was probably going to stay that way for a while.

"It really is. And yet we keep coming to these things anyway." And living here in general.

"I'm not sure at this point if that counts as masochism or a survival tactic," Kanan confessed.

"It can be two things, with additional Stockholm Syndrome," Kitty nodded.

"That sounds like the winner," Kanan admitted, nodding back. "I'm not even going to think about what that says about us all."

Eh. It was still better than home.

"That we're optimists at heart who make the best out of weird circumstances," Kitty tried.

"I'm going to go with that one," Kanan agreed. "That's me, an optimist."

... Eh, if you squinted.

"At heart," she repeated.

"At heart," Kanan allowed. He still wasn't completely sold on it, but then again, he couldn't exactly deny it, either.
