Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Over on this part of the school lawn... yeah, it was still chilly. Stupid winter, doing its winter thing. But there were plenty of chairs and tables for people watching, feasting on warm foods and drinks, and generally attempting to meet the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"What's that?" Uma asked, looking into Molly's cup of cocoa. "Didn't anybody ever tell you not to drink the brown water? You don't quite shit your guts out, but you'll wish you did."

Charming, thy name was Uma.

"It's chocolate," Molly said with a sheepish smile. "Not water. Chocolate and milk, heated up. I promise it won't give me the runs." And not just because she wasn't really drinking it.

Molly had spent about two years following around a necromancer who preyed almost exclusively on women. This was practically sophistication.

"I'm Molly, by the way."

"Uma," Uma said shortly and didn't bother to offer a hand. "What's chocolate?"

She had to keep asking questions here and she hated it.

No handshake suited Molly just fine.

"It's a sweet," she said. "Sugar and milk and cocoa stuff, all mixed together. You either make it into sweets or sometimes this."

She held out her cup. "You want a sip? I promise I've not actually had any of it yet."

"Why would that matter?" Uma asked. Look, she stole food off of people's plates all the time. It's what you did when you were hungry. Food was safe only when it was in your mouth and possibly not even then. "You drink first."

She still didn't entirely believe everything was okay for her to eat, so if this were some kind of prank, she was going to take this girl with her.

"Okay," Molly said, taking a sip that felt sizable enough to be a 'look, it's safe'. She smiled and held the cup out again. "Promise, it's not dangerous. Completely safe."

Uma's look suggested that her assurances were taken with whole flats of salt, but she took the mug. She'd backed herself into a corner now; she couldn't not drink and look like a coward. That was how you marked yourself as easy meat.

She brought the cup up to her lips and the scent of rich, creamy chocolate hit her nose. She'd been planning to fake taking more than a sip, but she'd never smelled anything more intoxicating.

It tasted even better than it smelled. "Maleficent's horns!" she swore, smiling purely by accident. "This is delicious!"

...Hope you didn't think you were getting this back, Molly.

She really was just using it to warm her hands.

"See? Not dirty water." She paused. "You really never had chocolate before. So I just got to see your first ever time with it. That's fabulous!"

"Wait, who or what is Maleficent?"

"We don't get much on the Isle," Uma said with a shrug. "Just Auradon's garbage. And no one throws away much chocolate, I guess."

With good reason, if that was what it tasted like. "Any that shows up, one of the higher-ranking villains grab."

Usually Cruella de Vil, that bitch. Or the Evil Queen.

"...Wait, how do you not know who Maleficent is? She's only the most villainous villain who ever lived. And her daughter Mal is a twat."

SUPER. CHARMING.

"Never heard of her, sorry," Molly said with an apologetic smile. "Also... villain is kind of subjective, you know?"

"No," Uma said shortly. "Villains are the bad guys."

C'mon, Molly. Uma's canon didn't do things like 'subtlety.' "Which is why twenty years ago, they were all rounded up and resurrected and sent to the Isle of the Lost to live out the rest of their lives, far away from the nice, good, law-abiding people of Auradon."

That last part was delivered with a sneer.

Ugh, goodness.

"So you're from the island of villains? What did you do to get sent there?"

Just... casually interested in what sort of evil things Uma had done.

"I was born," Uma said dryly. "To Ursula the sea-witch."

...You can take a second to sort through the implications of that, Molly. No rush here.

"You have to live on the island of bad people because you were born," Molly repeated.

"That's a really hideous system and completely mad, I hope you know."

Oh hon, you hadn't even heard all of it, yet.

"Well, they went through all the trouble of resurrecting her," Uma said with a shrug. "They weren't just going to let her out because she had a brat a couple years later."

"You were born on an island where people only eat garbage because your mom was a sea witch," Molly repeated. "I don't know where that makes sense, and I come from a place also very strange."

"Well, she did try to usurp the throne of Atlantica from her half-brother by turning his youngest daughter into animate sea kelp," Uma said proudly, because again, raised by villains. And Ursula was one of the most evil and most powerful, now that Maleficent was a lizard. "But yeah. That's pretty much it."

"Yes, but that's something she did," Molly said. "You didn't do anything to deserve garbage food for your entire life."

"Well, yesterday I kidnapped the king, held him hostage, snuck into a royal ball, put him under a love spell, and then attacked everyone on board," Uma said, because hell yes she was proud of that. Except for everything that had gone wrong, like getting tricked by a fake wand, the love spell breaking due to 'true love's kiss,' gag, and conceding the field to Ben at the end.

But the evil stuff, that she was proud of.

"Except now I'm here, instead of being on the Isle."

"But these were the people who had forced you to live on an island eating garbage since you were born, right?" Molly said. "They... probably deserved it."

"Ben is their son, he's my age," Uma said. "But yeah. He kept telling me he'd give me a chance." Her lip curled. "I didn't need him to give me a chance, to be 'part of the solution' to a problem his family made." She airquoted that, salt and sand falling off her fingerless gloves. "I told him I'd find my own way out."

"Ben's the king?" Molly asked, making sure she understood. "Honestly, coming here sounds way better than being back on garbage island or in their weird and also evil civilization."

"He's the king now," Uma said. "His parents decided to step down and make him be king a few months ago."

Yup. Perfectly rational adult thing to do: put a child in charge of everything. One more in a long line of brilliant decisions.

"And--yeah. The food's better anyway. But I left my crew behind." Uma frowned. Friends didn't leave friends back on the isle. That was the promise that she and Harry had made, after the coronation when Mal had chosen good and had forgotten all about them.

"Leaving friends behind is never good," Molly agreed. "Especially when they're victims of a terrible regime. Or, at least, that's how I'd report it."

"I didn't say friends, I said crew," Uma snapped quickly.

Even if she, in the privacy of her own thoughts, considered some of her crew friends, maybe, that didn't mean she was willing to admit that out loud.

"Villains don't have friends, we have underlings."
