Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Over on this part of the school lawn... yeah, it was still chilly. Stupid winter, doing its winter thing. But there were plenty of chairs and tables for people watching, feasting on warm foods and drinks, and generally attempting to meet the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"He's the king now," Uma said. "His parents decided to step down and make him be king a few months ago."

Yup. Perfectly rational adult thing to do: put a child in charge of everything. One more in a long line of brilliant decisions.

"And--yeah. The food's better anyway. But I left my crew behind." Uma frowned. Friends didn't leave friends back on the isle. That was the promise that she and Harry had made, after the coronation when Mal had chosen good and had forgotten all about them.

"Leaving friends behind is never good," Molly agreed. "Especially when they're victims of a terrible regime. Or, at least, that's how I'd report it."

"I didn't say friends, I said crew," Uma snapped quickly.

Even if she, in the privacy of her own thoughts, considered some of her crew friends, maybe, that didn't mean she was willing to admit that out loud.

"Villains don't have friends, we have underlings."

"That's a shame," Molly said. "Friends are better than any amount of treating people like they're not worth anything."

In fairness, that was also what villains did.

"Friends are a weakness that can be used against you, assuming they don't turn against you first," Uma said flatly.

GIL AND HARRY WERE AN EXCEPTION TO THAT! AND JUST CREW ANYWAY! SHUT UP SHE WOULD FIGHT YOU.

Uma shrugged. "Hard to be lonely when you're just trying to survive."

Not entirely true. You could be lonely and struggling to survive at the same time. But that was admitting weakness. And that was worse for survival than loneliness was.
