You know what was really fun when the island started thumping and shaking? Having sensory organs that were highly sensitive to vibrations.

Ahsoka was not a happy little Togruta when she opened the library today.

She also set up the tables in the middle and broke into that stash of library caf in the hopes it would summon people trying to fix this.

"The island's a little full of mega-fauna as it is," Tip agreed. "You've been here awhile, right? I mean, in Fandom."

"Graduate of the class of '13," Kenzi confirmed, then clarified, "2013. So yeah. I mean, I've seen lots worse than this, but still. Would be nice if we knew what to do, other than go out there with swords and bazookas." She smiled a little. "Were you around last semester? Or is this your first encounter with random stuff showing up?"

"You mean for the evil creepy non-doubles?" Tip asked. "Yeah, I was here for that. And got turned into a pony this summer. I have a gun -- sort of a raygun kind of thing? It can knock them out for a few seconds, but I don't want to use the more powerful setting on them unless I really have to. That . . . tends to do a lot of damage. And it'd be really bad if I missed."

"Preach," Kenzi said fervently. She gave the books a look of non-enthusiasm, then admitted, "Finding a way to stop it is probably better. And the answers have just about always turned up here, at least partly." She picked up one of the books in resignation. "If you see any in Russian, shoot them over to me."

"You read Russian?" Tip asked. "Cool."

"Yeah, my family emigrated from there to Canada when I was five." She looked up from the book she had, smiling a little. And putting off the evil moment of Research. "You're from around now, right? Is your world more magic-ky or science-y?"

"Um," said Tip. "Sciencey, I guess? My world got colonized by aliens about four years ago."

"Thaaaat would explain your special gun, yeah." Duh, Kenzi. She felt like smacking herself with the book. "Wait, colonized? Tell me they wanted the oceans and not the surface. Lie if you have to."

"The Boov are amphibious," Tip said, smiling faintly. "But no. We had to talk them into a deal so they'd take over Titan instead of Earth."

Kenzi gave her a dismayed look. "I don't know whether to be glad they're not still taking over your world or freaked out that it was that close. As well as disappointed we won't be building roller-coasters on Titan. Things are better now, though? Yes? And you got a space gun out of it, I guess."

"And a space car," Tip said. "And a space best friend." Bill lifted off of her hair and made bubble designs above her head. "And a space billboard," she added, looking up at him with a smile. "And humans won't, but the Boov tube system is basically the same thing. Only there are no cars or safety bars or anything. . . ."

"Dude," Kenzi said, pointing at her. "Don't play. You work for the Portalocity Tourism Board, don't you? 'Cause now I really really wanna visit that."

"The gravity's really low, and you'll have to get implanted with a little translator," Tip warned, twisting her head to show what looked like a large mole on the back of her neck. "And wear a collar."

Visiting New Boovworld had gotten a little bit nicer since the election, but only a little.

"Translator, sure. Collar, why?" Kenzi pouted.

"To identify you as belonging to your Boov host," Tip said with a massive eye roll.

Sorry, Kenzi. The Boov wouldn't let you just show up and ride their mass transit system for funsies.

Kathy heard that bit of exchange and called over, "Spanish and Korean over here."

Who knew? She'd found a clue about Gaunt in a book of ancient Korean horror storied.

Tip looked up, nodded, and pulled out her notebook to jot that down. "I can do some Italian . . . but not very fluently. This is good to know."

"You can?" Kathy looked up from her book and offered Tip a tentative smile. "Ciao, come stai? Il mio nome è Kathy, è bene conoscerla. Dove è la biblioteca?"

Kathy's cadence was the rather stilted staccato of 'I have recited these lines many times' rather than the rolling grace of fluency.

"Siamo nella biblioteca," Tip said with a small laugh. "My mom's Italian. I'm better at reading it than hearing it, though, unless the speaker has, like, exactly Mom's accent."

"I spent about eighteen months studying it last year," Kathy said. "Just started picking it back up again after not being able to for about a year, so I've forgotten some stuff."

That was...a way to put it, Kathy, sure.

"You've got Spanish, though," Tip noted. "So that should help. My mom managed to be the point person for talking to Spanish speaking refugees in Arizona and she never studied Spanish at all."

She was admittedly still pretty sure that had mostly been the spanish speakers humoring the hell out of her mom.

Kathy nodded. "That's how I managed to learn as much Italian as I did, since I was basically learning it from mp3s in my dorm room. I grew up in Koreatown--" Her expression was shadowed by sadness for a moment before she pushed it away, "--and, like, at least half the residents were Hispanic."

"New York?" Tip guessed.

Sorry, Kathy. She was an East Coast girl.

"Better," Kathy said, thinking of all the times she and Raven had this argument. "Los Angeles."

Her LA might be filled with hordes of the walking dead at the moment, but a girl still needed to have hometown pride.

"What makes it better than New York?" Tip asked.

She had absolutely no dog in this fight.
