Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Eliot watched for a few moments, one eyebrow raised. Honestly, he wasn't sure why he was even surprised.

"You need a hand with that?"

He was going to regret asking, wasn't he.

"Awfully generous of you, yes."

Wonka leaned on his cane, trying to strike a pose that looked dapper, rather than fatigued. He held the rope out to Eliot, glancing back at the object.

"I'd forgotten all about grass. Or at least, the real stuff. It's rather tricky, isn't it? Wheels don't seem to get along with it at all. I wonder if it's the wheels or the grass itself that need fixing..."

Now caught up in his puzzling, Wonka had neglected to note the small stream of smoke that was now coming from the object.

"What? The grass is just grass, man." Eliot did not want to know how this guy would propose to 'fix' the grass. He gave the rope a tug, then backed up a step at the smoke. "This thing ain't about to catch fire, is it?"

His eyes wandered to the top of the object.
"I should hope so. It's already on fire, and I'd like it to remain that way for a little while longer. Not too much longer, mind. At least until I've gotten it on there."
He pointed over toward the food tables. Yes, he was planning to try to lift the whole thing. He just didn't have the plan part yet.

Of course. Of course there was a crazy old man here who wanted to put a giant, flaming -- something on the welcome picnic's food table.

"Why is it on fire?!"

Wonka looked left, then right. He leaned conspiratorially over to Eliot, then whispered:

"Pizazz."

Eliot hated everything.

"Are you insane?"

"That," Wonka sniffed, "is a matter of perspective. But when Mr. Spencer gets here, I'm certain that he'll be positively pleased as punch."

Eliot winced. "Oh god. You're Wonka."

Because of course this was his new teaching buddy. Of course.

Wonka extended a hand.
"Willy Wonka, confectioner and chocolatier. And you are..?"
With a burst of realization, Wonka laughed, clapping himself on the head.
“Good gracious, you’re Eliot Spencer! Then there’s really no need to keep this covered. We can put it wherever you wish.”
Wonka turned back to the object, and grabbed the cloth covering it. He took one breath, expression momentarily locked in steely concentration. Then he pulled at the whole thing, tugging so hard he nearly fell over. The cover slid away to reveal the object underneath.
A cake. (http://i.imgur.com/82wNSEu.jpg) A very large, brightly colored cake, of several layers, patterns, and countless candles. Atop the giant confection were a handful of sparklers, the light from which danced upon the glittery top layer.
Wonka stepped back from his gift, taking in first the sight, then eagerly awaiting Eliot’s reaction.
“The squirrels informed me that you would be my ‘teaching buddy.’ It wouldn’t do to show up empty-handed.”

Eliot stared.

Somewhere off in the picnicy distance, a pink haired girl let out an absolutely delighted squeal.

Eliot stared some more.

"Oh no," he said softly. "You shouldn't have."

Wonka’s eyes lit up, and his face broke into a huge smile.

"My pleasure! Though I do seem to have forgotten what it's like to cook on a smaller scale. It is a gift for you, but perhaps, unless your household happens to include more than a hundred habitats, you might want to share."

OOC: I can make a post in the mingling thread to open the cake up to everyone else, if you’d like.

[ooc: that sounds like a perfect plan!]

"Sharing," Eliot said, grasping desperately at the option that didn't result in this thing in his house and Parker attempting to eat the entire thing. "Yes. Great plan. Let's share it."

"I knew my first impression was correct! Generous indeed!" He beamed. "I will make sure that everyone thanks you."

He raised a gloved hand. "No need to turn that down, I absolutely insist on making your largesse known."

Eliot gave a long suffering sigh. He was going to have to pick his battles here, wasn't he.

"Right. Thanks." The cake taken care of -- and not setting anything on fire, thankfully -- it was time to move on to other matters. "So. You taught before?"

[identity profile] simply2ndnature.livejournal.com 2016-12-30 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonka shook his head. "Not in an academic setting. I've trained some members of my work force, but I've very rarely had to start from scratch. I have been told, however, that I am very good at teaching people lessons and shaping young minds."

He grinned. "And what subject do you teach, Mr. Spencer?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers [Spring 2017]

[personal profile] vdistinctive 2016-12-30 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Teaching people lessons" wasn't the most foreboding way Wonka could have said that, but Eliot still blinked and gave him a minute side-eye. In his world, that phrase typically meant beating the crap out of someone.

"Most anything the school asks me to," he said, passing it off as just an odd turn of phrase. "This place is fairly non-traditional, so they've bounced me around some. Did Shop class last semester, doing Home Ec this time around."

[identity profile] simply2ndnature.livejournal.com 2016-12-30 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)

"A jack of all trades! There's nothing finer than learning about something completely new." He nodded approvingly. "And I do believe that I've been assigned the home economics room for my class, as well. I'll be bringing in ingredients for my classes, but please feel free to make use of any leftovers. I'll mark anything that could be dangerous. I'm very particular about warnings."

vdistinctive: (eyebrow-face)

[personal profile] vdistinctive 2016-12-30 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Eliot's eyebrow went up again at that. He was intrigued despite himself. "Yeah? What sorts of dangerous ingredients you thinkin' about using?"

He was under the impression that Wonka meant, say, puffer fish or something.

[identity profile] simply2ndnature.livejournal.com 2016-12-30 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He put a finger to his lips. "Well, I plan to start the class out on the basics. Simple fruits, smallish cakes. But in time, they may even be handling more dubious elements, like..."

He suppresses a shudder.

"Breakfast cereals."
vdistinctive: (pleased-face)

[personal profile] vdistinctive 2016-12-30 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That got a chuckle out of Eliot. "Hell, man, if high fructose corn syrup and styrofoam 'marshmallows' are the worst you have to deal with, you'll be gettin' off lucky."

[identity profile] simply2ndnature.livejournal.com 2016-12-30 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
What. That had his attention.

"Who's the genius who's been putting corn syrup and marshmallows in cereal?"

It might've sounded like sarcasm, but it wasn't. Had he missed modern breakfast developments? Had the public finally revolted and discarded those heaps of pencil shavings which cereal companies attempted to pass off as food?

And worse, were they doing a shoddy job of it? Under no circumstances should marshmallows ever be likened to Styrofoam.
vdistinctive: (artsy-face)

[personal profile] vdistinctive 2016-12-30 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"General Mills," Eliot said. "Kellogs. Most of the big cereal companies." He looked Wonka over again, starting to wonder if that outfit wasn't just an affectation. ". . . Whereabouts are you from, anyway? And, uh. When?"

[identity profile] simply2ndnature.livejournal.com 2016-12-30 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Afraid I didn't catch that, awfully windy out here." He proceeded to change the subject. "Let me get a slice of cake for you." He produced a large knife from his coat, and cut a large piece with sparkler from the topmost layer, depositing it on one of the plates from the food table. The sparkler was still lit, brightly shining and sparking.

[personal profile] vdistinctive 2016-12-30 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I said -- thanks." Eliot was not going to get any sort of handle on this conversation at all, was he. "Look, some folks are from all different times and universes here. So just -- be ready for that."
