Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Afraid I didn't catch that, awfully windy out here." He proceeded to change the subject. "Let me get a slice of cake for you." He produced a large knife from his coat, and cut a large piece with sparkler from the topmost layer, depositing it on one of the plates from the food table. The sparkler was still lit, brightly shining and sparking.

"I said -- thanks." Eliot was not going to get any sort of handle on this conversation at all, was he. "Look, some folks are from all different times and universes here. So just -- be ready for that."

"Excellent! Some people are so strange about which locations they choose to acknowledge. I'm looking forward to teaching in a community with broader minds and maps."

"Right." This was possibly the weirdest conversation Eliot had had at this school yet, and he'd cotaught with a talking pony. "Watch out for gremlins, too. They make you hallucinate."

Hallucination-inducing gremlins? His author was obsessed with those travels had left him familiar with them as a concept, but Wonka had never met one face-to-face.

"I will bear that in mind. Can't have them making me see what isn't there. Imagine the sorts of wild mix-ups that could happen!"

He was grinning from ear to ear.

This was going to end in tears, wasn't it.

Hilarious tears.

". . . Yeah. They're kind of a problem." You didn't seem to actually be finding them enough of a problem, Wonka. "How'd you end up gettin' hired here, anyway?"

"One of the ladies in my factory's nut department is a cousin of one of the newspaper reporters here. She put in a good word for me."

"Report -- you mean the squirrels?" Oh yes, Eliot was regretting asking.

"Yes, indeed! The factory has employed several generations of squirrel workers in our nut department." He stuck out his chest as he talked, bragging on his factory as though it were a cherished child. "We hire nothing less than the most competent operatives."

"Oh yeah," Eliot said. "You're gonna get along here just fine."
