Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

And the Nathan Algren guy, while not really aware that he was supposed to be keeping an eye out for Tony just yet, was making his way over to him with a disgruntled-if-pleasant smile on his face the moment he recognized the man.

He was wearing a Japanese haori and hakama, and had an armload of personal possessions, mostly clothes. A sword. Some old journals. Unfortunately, none of these things included shoes. It was winter here. Just guess at his reasons for being disgruntled.

"Tony," he called out, giving him a familiar nod and a look of relief. "Please tell me this gathering isn't what I think this gathering is?"

"A welcome picnic," Tony ventured, taking in all that Tom Cruise weeabo. "Have we met? I'm sorry, I'm usually better at placing people."

"It's a welcome picnic," Nathan muttered under his breath, shaking his head. "Of course it's a welcome picnic."

Because the island thought it was funny. It generally did.

The rest of that caught up to Nathan a moment later, and he gave Tony an odd look.

"Nathan? Nathan Algren? I'm fairly sure we've met, at least once or twice. There was the fishing trip with Steve and Tyler? The winter in Japan? The bees?"

He was never going to let go of the bees.

Tony smiled, nodding in understanding. "That might have been one of the other two me's here before I arrived. Sorry. On the plus side, I'm supposed to help you get settled in with teaching?"

"One of the other two?" Nathan, come on. That was no call to look mildly horrified. "The multiverse can handle three Tony Starks?"

Okay, horrified if fond. He and Tony-not-this-Stark went way back.

"Steve said the same thing," Tony replied dryly. "Might be a different Steve, though."

"Because of course there are multiple Steves, too," Nathan sighed, shaking his head a little. This was weird by his recent day-to-day standards, but around here it wasn't exactly surprising, either.

Just wait until he saw this Steve. He'd be so confused.

"Well, then," he shifted his armload of things around, balancing everything in the crook of one elbow, and offered Tony a handshake. "Tony. Mr. Stark. Pleased to meet you."

"Tony," he insisted with a laugh, shaking his hand. "And likewise.

"Tony," Nathan settled on, giving him a brief flash of a grin. "Then Nathan will do just as well in turn. You might not be the Tony I know, but that would have been a difficult habit to kick, anyway."

"We're the best people to know," Tony assured him easily.

"I'll allow that you're at least among the most interesting people to know," Nathan decided. "I'm going to reserve judgement on the 'best' part until I've known you long enough to decide how you compare to the original."

He'd met the original over drinks at Caritas. New-Tony already had some catching up to do.

"I like to think I'm the original," Tony replied, glancing at the pile of things in Nathan's arms. "Do you... need a place to stay? My spare room is taken, but I have a very comfortable couch."

"I've slept in worse places," Nathan admitted, though there was a touch of relief on his face all the same. "I have my doubts that the place I was living in six years ago is still standing vacant, though I wouldn't want to impose on your hospitality for too long. Even just a place to leave my things while I get a feel for what the island has to offer would be appreciated, thank you."

Really, at this point, his priorities mostly involved shoes first, a place to sleep at night second. And only if he couldn't get a portal back before either. But he wasn't holding his breath for that portal. He'd been sucked in my Fandom once before, after all.

... He was going to need that couch.

Tony waved him off. "I like a noisy house. Just don't blow anything up. I'd offer you some shoes, but I don't know if they'd fit."

This Tony also managed to be taller than the old one. Which was nice. You know. For him.

Yeah, Nathan was just telling himself that was his imagination, because he'd been spending his time largely around people who were short even without taking genetics into consideration.

Mostly. Higen had grown considerably since Nathan had moved back to be with Taka. The boy was in his teens now, and sprouting like a damn weed. Either way, for the most part, he'd almost felt tall for a while, there!

"I'll pass on the shoes, then," he replied, shrugging it off. "I've gotten this far without them, I might as well just go for broke and find a pair in town that fits for sure."

Tony hung out with people like Steve and Thor. It was super nice to feel tall for a change.

"Did your Tony have the shop?" Or was it the other Tony?

"I'm pretty sure my Tony would have chewed off his own arm going stir crazy if he didn't have the shop."

And Nathan wasn't the sort to get so chummy with a Tony who had been, like, sixteen at the time.

He wasn't judging! Much.

"Same place. I'll let JARVIS know to let you in."

"Thank you," Nathan said, nodding just slightly. "I probably won't need the couch for long. Long enough to find a place of my own, at least, but here that's generally as easy as finding a building that doesn't already have somebody living in it, and then musing out lout that perhaps I would like to."

More or less. Fandom.

"However long you need," Tony replied. Then had to eye him again. "I have to know what's going on with the outfit."

"Six years in Japan, roughly a hundred and thirty years ago."

Yeah, even after all this time, that didn't sound less insane to even him.

"The lack of shoes was because I was indoors when the island grabbed me, this time around."

As opposed to drowning.

"...well, that makes more sense," Tony admitted. "I was guessing a really intense cosplayer."

Tony.

There was a long moment of silence before Nathan finally just sighed and gave in.

"Twenty-first century thing?"

He probably didn't want to know.

"Twenty-first century thing," Tony replied with a grin. Hey, Steve would have someone around who had almost as much to catch up on as him!

He did not know about the two cowboys yet.

Those poor, poor cowboys. Nathan had only met the one, and he actually almost felt bad about just how in over his head Goodnight probably was around here.

He'd feel less guilty about it if the man hadn't apparently been shot to death this morning.

"Then I'll smile and nod while contemplating updating my wardrobe slightly. Eventually."

There had been Armani his last time living here. That was also Tony's fault.
