Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Anakin was there in his Jedi robes looking as approachable as always.

Which was...not terribly. Oops.

... So help him, Kanan had been nerving himself up to this one since he'd found out about a few of the other Jedi on the island, and now seemed like as good a day as any.

"Master Skywalker." He offered Anakin a respectful nod of his head. "Uh... hi."

Eloquence, thy name was Jarrus.

Anakin nodded back. "Hello. You've been here for a while, right?"

"Since the start of summer, yeah," Kanan agreed, and offered Anakin the faintest twitch of a smile. It was somewhere between wry and just flat-out awkward.

Awkward was a new state, for Kanan. He hadn't felt awkward since before he'd taken off in The Escape and left Kasmir behind.

"I've been meaning to at least say hello since I first got here. You're the dean, aren't you?"

... Which was not what Kanan wanted to say, but hey, it seemed like a better conversation starter than 'Uh, hi.'

Anakin nodded again. "I am. It's....something."

Wow, guys. Way to totally tank on talking like adults.

In Kanan's limited defense, he was all of thirteen the last time he saw Master Skywalker around the temple. Somehow, this was more weird than talking to Obi-Wan had been. But then, Obi-Wan had approached him.

Because he'd been staring.

Like a slack-jawed creeper.

"With a group like this, yeah, I can imagine," he said. And then huffed out a breath and gave a sheepish chuckle. "Space, this is going well." He offered Anankin a hand. "Kanan Jarrus. Teaching about Culture Shock this semester, apparently."

A little different from the 'Caleb Dume' that he'd gone by back at the temple. Stuff happened. Anakin probably knew how that was.

And how. Not that he'd say so.

"Anakin Skywalker," Anakin replied with a small smile. "Master Kenobi and I are tackling Ethics again."

"Can't think of a better pair for the job," Kanan replied, honestly. He blew out another little breath, and then chuckled and shook his head. "Sorry, until coming here, I haven't seen robes like those in a while. Or the sort of people who wear them. Everything about this place is taking a bit of getting used to."

Anakin's expression turned cautious. "You're from a version of home, then."

Lala, playing stupid, lala. He couldn't exactly lead with "Nice to see you with your eyes," could he?

Well, he could, but it probably wouldn't end well. At all.

"Yeah," Kanan confirmed, after a moment. He was starting to feel maybe a touch on the awkward side again. Maybe this was a mistake? This was probably a mistake. "That junk heap parked on the roof of the MCA is mine. Sort of mine. Actually, it belongs to Moonglow Polychemical, but I can't exactly take it back to them. The portals aren't cooperating with me enough for that."

He did an impressive job of not fidgeting, at least.

"There was a Padawan, once upon a time. Drove the masters crazy during lessons with all the questions he kept asking. Kind of had a reputation for it, if what Master Billaba told me is true."

Infamous. The word for it was 'infamous.'

Anakin's eyes lit up. "I remember you!"

Well, the non-fire and awfulness part, too.

Dammit. He really was infamous. Kanan gave a sheepish chuckle as he reached a hand up to run through his hair.

Which was pulled back. The same way it had been for eight years, now. Right.

"Yeah, that kid," he confirmed. "I want to think I'm at least less annoying, these days."

But really, that all depended on who you asked.

"That remains to be seen."

This was Anakin trying to be funny. He was...not good at it.
