Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

In Kanan's limited defense, he was all of thirteen the last time he saw Master Skywalker around the temple. Somehow, this was more weird than talking to Obi-Wan had been. But then, Obi-Wan had approached him.

Because he'd been staring.

Like a slack-jawed creeper.

"With a group like this, yeah, I can imagine," he said. And then huffed out a breath and gave a sheepish chuckle. "Space, this is going well." He offered Anankin a hand. "Kanan Jarrus. Teaching about Culture Shock this semester, apparently."

A little different from the 'Caleb Dume' that he'd gone by back at the temple. Stuff happened. Anakin probably knew how that was.

And how. Not that he'd say so.

"Anakin Skywalker," Anakin replied with a small smile. "Master Kenobi and I are tackling Ethics again."

"Can't think of a better pair for the job," Kanan replied, honestly. He blew out another little breath, and then chuckled and shook his head. "Sorry, until coming here, I haven't seen robes like those in a while. Or the sort of people who wear them. Everything about this place is taking a bit of getting used to."

Anakin's expression turned cautious. "You're from a version of home, then."

Lala, playing stupid, lala. He couldn't exactly lead with "Nice to see you with your eyes," could he?

Well, he could, but it probably wouldn't end well. At all.

"Yeah," Kanan confirmed, after a moment. He was starting to feel maybe a touch on the awkward side again. Maybe this was a mistake? This was probably a mistake. "That junk heap parked on the roof of the MCA is mine. Sort of mine. Actually, it belongs to Moonglow Polychemical, but I can't exactly take it back to them. The portals aren't cooperating with me enough for that."

He did an impressive job of not fidgeting, at least.

"There was a Padawan, once upon a time. Drove the masters crazy during lessons with all the questions he kept asking. Kind of had a reputation for it, if what Master Billaba told me is true."

Infamous. The word for it was 'infamous.'

Anakin's eyes lit up. "I remember you!"

Dammit. He really was infamous. Kanan gave a sheepish chuckle as he reached a hand up to run through his hair.

Which was pulled back. The same way it had been for eight years, now. Right.

"Yeah, that kid," he confirmed. "I want to think I'm at least less annoying, these days."

But really, that all depended on who you asked.

This was Anakin trying to be funny. He was...not good at it.

Kanan blinked. And then Kanan huffed out a short breath that was a kind of uncertain laugh.

"Right." Was Anakin trying to be funny? Was that a thing he was doing? He wasn't entirely sure. "Well, if I ever fail at that one, I'm sure somebody will let me know."

"Probably Obi-Wan," Anakin said. "He does a disappointed look that has you looking for a rock to crawl under."

"... I suppose I should consider myself lucky that I haven't gotten the disappointed look from him yet," Kanan decided. "Mostly, it's the 'I don't even have to try that hard to not look amused, but we both know I am' look."

And he seemed to get that one a lot.

Anakin snickered. "I got that one a lot as a Padawan. He's stroking his beard to hide a smile?"

"All the time," Kanan admitted, giving a somewhat more relaxed chuckle. "Kind of makes me wish I could have seen him when he was a Padawan. There is no way he's always been mister Perfect Jedi, is there?"

"He was still pretty perfect," Anakin said with a fond smile. "The haircut did him no favors, though."

"Maybe it's for the best that the Jedi were never known for their great hair," Kanan offered. "With perhaps a few notable exceptions."

The shameless ones who actually cared about how they looked. Not that there was anybody like that here now, right?

"Or Master Windu, who just shaved it all off," Anakin said. "I tried that once. It looked terrible."

"The only Master Windu out there is Master Windu," Kanan agreed, nodding. "I'm pretty sure I couldn't pull off 'bald' so well, myself. I'll take long but out of the way for now and consider that a win."

"Like Master Jinn," Anakin said, nodding.

"I never got to know Master Jinn," Kanan said, after a moment's pause. "I was maybe a year old when he died."

Did you feel old yet, Anakin?

"But I've heard great things about the man." A pause. "And his hair."

Anakin felt ancient, yeah, and he'd met his own great-great-grandkid.

"He was a major influence on Obi-Wan," Anakin said, nodding.

"Then I really am sorry I never got to get to know him," Kanan said, an actual tinge of regret in his voice. Not that there was really much that he could have done differently. What were his options? Be born earlier? "Maybe you or Master Kenobi can tell me more about him, sometime."

"I'd love to," Anakin said. "It might be slightly more difficult for Master Kenobi."

Kanan nodded in understanding.

"I would find it difficult to talk about Master Billaba, and I didn't spend as much time with her as I suppose Master Kenobi would have spent with Master Jinn," he admitted. "But if you don't mind, I would appreciate it. I feel as though I've lost touch of a lot of... all of it, and so far Master Kenobi and yourself are the two only connections to what I left behind that I have."

Well. And the holocron that Depa had given to him on the night she was murdered. But he didn't talk about that.

Anakin nodded, biting his lower lip (because he was so, so guilty for why Kanan didn't have any Jedi around. SO GUILTY.). "I only know about Master Jinn from a brief encounter when I was ten, plus the stories Master Kenobi told me, often using that exasperated but not really tone."

"I know that tone," Kanan replied, smiling faintly. "Master Billaba used one like it with me now and again, too. Is learning how to use that tone a prerequisite for becoming a Master that nobody ever told me about?"
