Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

There'd been advance notice, so this shouldn't have been news to Xanthippe.

However, she'd missed the advance notice. So this was news to Xanthippe.

"What? A new roommate? No."

But tell us how you really feel, Xan.

Well... since Jono was teaching this semester, he supposed it was only right and proper to haul himself down to the picnic to see the new students. Get a feel for what he was up against.

Scar them for life, a little.

That sort of thing.

So he was leaning against the end of a picnic table, flames out, arms crossed over that space where there should have been a chest, just quietly (and not at all ominously) overseeing the crowd.

First person to mention weddings to him was going to get such a look.

Surly and in uniform, that was the usual Electroclash way for these thing, and that was how it was going to be today, too.

She didn't want to give the wrong impression. Of being a nice and approachable person. Or something.

Peridot didn't have the faintest idea just what a Kuzco was meant to be. She also wasn't entirely certain why she had been selected to be a sibling to one of them. But here she was, looking dubious if game, and keeping an eye out for such a being.

She had her name tag slapped across her chest and a faintly bemused expression on her face. If this was to be her purpose around here, then so be it. She would be a sibling to this new human until she could find her way back to Homeworld. And she would be most dutifully so, at that.

So, Kanan still seemed to be stuck in this galaxy. So, here in this galaxy, he was going to be teaching some more. Which was fine. He was fine with this. Maybe he still didn't think of himself as teacher material, but if he was going to be here anyway, he might as well. And hey, that dog that he'd insisted up and down that he wasn't going to keep had tagged along to the picnic, too.

He'd insist it was because he was teaching a class about weird Island things this semester, and a rainbow dog definitely fit the bill. The truth of the matter was more that Stance had given him big sad puppy eyes and even Kanan wasn't a monster who would make a sad-eyed puppy miss out on meeting all the new people. So here he was, occasionally feeding Stance cold cuts from the food tables. Apparently, rainbow dalmatians liked ham.

Cassandra and Lucille had put in their request some time ago, of course, but she was still smiling as she read their names off.

It would be a good distraction from missing Garik, at least.

Right, Atton was back at work. He had a bottle of water in one hand as he surveyed the new kids. So far, nobody seemed to be from his galaxy or was some kind of weird antropomorphic animal, but they were all depressingly human-looking.

Oh well.

Obi-Wan arrived good and early, installing himself somewhere in the middle of the picnic. He enjoyed being a part of the bustle, even if he didn't participate in it; so he had a faint smile on his face the whole time.

Blue had dropped off her bags in her room and attempted to start unpacking, but after opening the closet and discovering Thorin had annexed it for scepter storage while she was away, had decided to leave that for another time. Now she was waiting for her new little sibling, and hoping she wasn't going to horribly butcher their name.

"... the bloody hell is that?"

Electroclash was talking about the dog, of course, having wandered by, and stopped for a double-take. And despite her usual gruff manner of going about it, she didn't exactly sound like she disapproved. A lot, anyway.

Electroclash hadn't seen Atton in a very long fucking time.

But it was not in her nature to draw attention to such things. "Any interesting new brats?" she drawled, by way of greeting. "D'we get anyone with a tail?"

Kanan blinked up at the woman from where he was crouched, feeding Stance a slice of roast beef, and then he laughed easily and stood again with a shrug of his shoulders.

"People keep telling me he's a dog," he shared. "Or, actually, they seem kind of divided on that one, but he at least mostly looks like an Earth dog and definitely acts like one, if all the things around my apartment with chew marks in them serve as any indication."

Brian didn't want to talk about his summer. Brian wasn't allowed to talk about his summer, but that was a whole other thing. Suffice it to say that he looked exhausted, he had a still-healing bruise on the left side of his jaw, and the drug running trade in the Chicago area had taken a serious hit. Also, he hadn't gotten a chance to swing by his apartment yet and was going to be pretty surprised when he got there and found that the milk he was pretty sure he'd left in the fridge back in May was far from the least of his problems where it was concerned.

Electroclash gave a quiet little snort. "Where the fuck did you get a dog that looks like that?"

Because the spots were criminally cute. She cute imagine She-Force's reaction (which was why it was a good thing She-Force wasn't actually here, because no one needed that kind of high-pitched flailing and babbling).

"One of the stops the island made this summer. The one with... well, basically his color scheme," Kanan replied, smiling a little as Stance trotted over to investigate the new person, looking up at her with a big doggy smile. "I'm still mostly counting myself lucky it was just him. It could have been him, a few more dogs besides, some flying cats, and a bear. I can handle being followed home by just one of these things."

Well, mostly. He'd still lost a pair of boots to the little guy that he was going to mourn for a while longer. They'd been good boots, damn it.

Kira was excited to see that she had a new roommate since Alex had gone home, but wow, that was a heck of a name next to hers on the list, and she wasn't sure if she was looking around for a girl or a guy.

Grace had gone running straight for the food, but Zoe was waiting, looking around to get a feel for how things were going. This was always one of her favorite and most nerve-wracking times of year, but she had high hopes that things would go well as she looked folks over.

Lucille approached Cassandra, smiling. She knew her friend had had to say goodbye to someone close to her, and she would do her best to be a good and understanding friend.

"I have tidied our room," she said. Our room. Lucille felt excited.

Roscoe didn't know which possibility was more badass - the idea that someone actually named their kid "Negasonic Teenage Warhead," or the idea that someone picked that name to go by. Although then again, this was Fandom. He figured he shouldn't rule out the possibility that his new little sibling was an actual talking warhead. (What was a warhead, anyway? He figured he'd probably know it when he saw it, but he quickly Googled it on his phone anyway, just to be prepared.)

In any case, he was hoping this Negasonic Teenage Warhead liked cupcakes, because he had one ready and waiting on a plate for them. And another small present, too, but he'd wait to unveil that one.

Hannibal was here. He was sitting more often than standing, and his usual cooler bag was sitting on a table where Jono had set it.

Hannibal himself was moving a bit stiffly, and still had a few bruises and scrapes visible on his face, but he was doing his best to look friendly and approachable regardless.

Ahsoka had come out of her meditation to a pair of lightsabers and a comm message thanking her for 'volunteering' as a big sibling.

Five minutes ago.

Hopefully this Rhys hadn't had any surprises (like meeting people you thought were dead, to pick a random example), before she'd gotten here.
