Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Roscoe didn't know which possibility was more badass - the idea that someone actually named their kid "Negasonic Teenage Warhead," or the idea that someone picked that name to go by. Although then again, this was Fandom. He figured he shouldn't rule out the possibility that his new little sibling was an actual talking warhead. (What was a warhead, anyway? He figured he'd probably know it when he saw it, but he quickly Googled it on his phone anyway, just to be prepared.)

In any case, he was hoping this Negasonic Teenage Warhead liked cupcakes, because he had one ready and waiting on a plate for them. And another small present, too, but he'd wait to unveil that one.

If Roscoe was looking hard enough he'd probably find a girl with a sullen expression on her face which was currently glued to a phone.

Luckily for him a name tag with "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" had been stuck to her leather jacket over her protests.

Roscoe did spot her after searching for a while.

She did not look like a warhead, but she did look cool as hell.

"Hey!" he said brightly, extending the cupcake out to her. "Negasonic? I'm Roscoe. I'm sort of like your orientation buddy."

She looked up from her phone and gave Roscoe a cursory look. "You're supposed to orient me to what exactly?"

Roscoe laughed at the directness of the question. "Well, that's a long story," he admitted. "It's kind of a bumpy ride, so before I dump you in headfirst, take this." He shoved the cupcake out at her, and then fished out another small plastic bag from his purse. He didn't offer her that one yet, but kept it in his hands.

"So, the thing is, you're gonna meet some really different people here. Like, really different. From really different places."

She'd give Roscoe a chance.

"You mean like a guy who thinks he's a king, a princess and a neurotic guy without an arm or eye?" She asked with just a trace of snark/amusement.

"Okay, so you took the bus here," Roscoe guessed with a smirk. This would be easier than he'd thought. "Yeah, it's seriously fucking weird, but the deal in a nutshell is basically that people come here from, like, parallel but totally different worlds or dimensions or whatever you want to call it. Like, there's a girl here who told me on my first day that her world was invaded by aliens who like bossed everyone around and took over Hollywood and shit and she couldn't believe I didn't know about it. 'Cause where I come from, it totally never happened."

"Huh."

She let that sink in. "You ever hear of a bunch of people who got superpowers because of genetic mutation?"

She might be testing you on that one Roscoe.

"No," Roscoe said. "But there's like a ton of people around here with superpowers so I wouldn't be surprised if that's where some of their powers came from. Is that what you are?"

It explained the name, if nothing else.
