Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"He's probably a little camera shy. You have such fun customs here!" Mr. Peanutbutter cheerfully licked Stance back. Not doing so would be rude. "Now, Kanan, are you . . . my assistant, orrrrrrrr. . . ?"

So, Kanan's teaching buddy just licked his dog. That was a new one, even for Kanan, and he found himself kind of wondering just what he'd gotten himself into.

"Something like that," he replied. "I'm another teacher, myself, so I've got other commitments to look after, of course. But the school has a teaching buddy program. Apparently it's so that new teachers can settle in to life around the island a little more easily. I'm here to answer whatever questions you might have, show you around... that sort of thing. I think."

In hindsight, be probably should have taken advantage of his own teaching buddy more back when he had the chance. Knowing where the bars were had been important, sure, but there was more to the island than that.

There was a pause, and then Kanan added, "Did you say 'camera?'"

"A mentor character! Of course, that's brilliant! A little off trope to make him younger than me, but that's what's selling these days." Kanan, you were going to learn so much about Earth television culture. "Oh, are we not filming this bit? I heard this was going to be a hidden camera production, so I just figured I'd assume I was on any time I was on campus."

... You had confused the Padawan, Peanutbutter. Well done.

"Oh. Uh." Kanan looked around, nonplussed, before shrugging his shoulders a little bit. "I suppose there are the squirrels. They're usually recording whatever goes on in their vicinity, if you're ever not sure."

Of course, they were doing so with tiny pads of paper and pencils, but let's be real, here. Paper and Earth's telecommunications technology were both practically the same thing compared to the holos that Kanan was used to.

Mr. Peanutbutter waved that off with a flick of his hand. "I'm used to paparazzi." They were usually birds back home in LA, but squirrels made just as much sense to him as anything else. "I'm surprised they were here already, though. Is there anyone else famous? Or -- ooo, is it the water thing?"

Kanan blinked, following roughly half of that before settling on the easiest part to address. He hoped.

"Uh... there's a water thing?"

"Isn't there? I could be mistaken." Mr. Peanutbutter was not well known for following current events that didn't directly relate to him or his family, or weren't written on question cards for his short lived game show. "My wife was always talking about it. 'There's too much lead in the water, we have to send them bottles of water, everyone forgot about the water crisis once it wasn't in the news but it's still going on, it's illegal to serve water until the customer asks.' That last one might be about California." He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "She's really well informed. She listens to NPR."

"Oh. Right. The... water thing." Kanan scratched at his beard, and then shook his head. "I think the water's pretty okay out here. I mean, I don't know for sure, and I can probably find out for sure for you if you're concerned. But nobody ever mentioned it to me as an issue. Of course, we've only been parked here for a couple of days, now. Maybe it's just a Baltimore thing."

He wasn't from around here.

"Right, right, of course." Kanan had clearly been brought in specifically for Mr. Peanutbutter's show. Hence the only being parked there for a little while. It made perfect sense. "I only really drink bottled water anyway, I'm sure it's fine. Did you say Baltimore? I loved ~~meta for~~ The Wire!"

"Yeah, it's... great." Kanan smiled the smile of a man who had no idea what that was. And then he shrugged. "I keep meaning to get out and check out the mainland, see if there's anything worthwhile to take in on that side of the Causeway. There has to at least be a decent night life. The small town thing is okay, but Fandom doesn't have much to do when the sun goes down."

The lament of a man who had grown up in cities that were entire planets large.

"Ooo, yeah," Mr. Peanutbutter said, eyes distant and speculative. "Even the Labrador Peninsula's bigger than this place seems to be, though Captain Peanutbutter and I mostly liked to go out and have campfires after dark, there. Oh!" He threw his hands in the air, his ears perking up excitedly. If he'd had a tail, it would be wagging. "We should take a crew field trip! Really bond as a production before we get into the full swing of things."

This was a terrible idea. Standard Earth Baltimore was not ready for the likes of Mr. Peanutbutter. And the population of Fandom was probably only slightly better prepared for Mr. Peanutbutter's Baltimore.

And see, these were the things that other, less stunted Jedi probably had 'bad feelings' about.

Sigh.

"Actually, that sounds like fun," Kanan admitted, because he was still in his 'bad at Jedi' phase. He'd grow out of it. Someday. "See the sights, assuming there are any. Acquaint ourselves with the area, that sort of thing?"

"Meet some ladies, get into trouble and get kicked out of the bar, all the things we'll laugh about later. . . ." Mr. Peanutbutter sighed happily. "If only Erica were here. She's great at capers."

And almost always showed up at any given party. It was almost weird not being able to look over and spot her just ~~off screen~~ on the other side of a group of people.

"Well, I've been known to have a caper or two," Kanan offered with a grin. "Who's Erica? Friend of yours from back home?"

Wherever that was. Really, it was a miracle that Kanan knew about Baltimore, at this point.

"Oh absolutely!" Mr. Peanutbutter considered everyone who wasn't a direct enemy or stranger his friend. And even some of the people who were those things. You, Kanan, were already one of his closest friends in the world on this island. Even if you didn't lick him like Stance did. "Every time I see her I can't help but shout her name at the top of my lungs and tease her about whether or not she's allowed within 100 feet of the party guests or not. Maybe you've read about her. Do you follow tabloids at all?"

"Not unless I think there's a chance I'm going to be in them," Kanan replied, chuckling easily. "Which has been pretty slim, really. Most of what they report on in those things is made up, isn't it? 'Thranta-man arrested for impersonating the Emperor in Nar Shaddaa cantina,' that sort of thing?"

"I understood maybe half of that headline," Mr. Peanutbutter said cheerfully. "But probably!"

And the sad thing was, Kanan wouldn't have the first clue about what sort of made-up headlines they had on Earth. Now he kind of felt as though he was missing out on something important, here.

"Probably is close enough," he decided. "Maybe I'll pick one up one of these days and see if they have anything to say about her. I might as well."

"I'm sure the publicity department will ship some in," Mr. Peanutbutter assured him. "They've got to keep up with all the gossip, even if it's mostly made up!"

"We have a publicity department?" Kanan frowned thoughtfully. "I must not have run into them yet. But you can probably get tabloids in town. There are a few places that sell a little bit of everything, anyway."

Or anything that he'd ever thought to pick up. Once he learned what it was.

Except caf. Sigh. He'd have to suck up to the busboy at Luke's some more and see if his father's brother's cousin's whatever still knew a guy.

"I should hope so," Mr. Peanutbutter said, suddenly concerned. "The whole point of this project is to get my name out there doing good things for my campaign." He shook his head, brightening right back up again. "More good things, that is. Saving Pacific Ocean City was a hell of a feat, but it's not quite enough glory to ride straight into the governor's mansion."

"You're doing this as a political move?"

Okay, that one, Kanan hadn't seen coming. Huh.

"I guess there's nothing quite like teaching to show people that you care, huh?"

"Exactly. Everyone loves the heartwarming tale of a teacher who really reaches his students. Changes their lives. I mean, there was the one where one of the kids committed suicide, but I think the moral of that one was that it wasn't Robin Williams' fault."

Blink. Blink blink.

"I don't think I've seen that one," Kanan said, a little lamely.

Because he hadn't. He hadn't seen any Earth entertainment yet.

It was a wonder he didn't go mad with boredom around here.

"Oh you should! It's one of the inspirations for my show!"
