Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

This could only end in Kanan getting up on a desk during some class someday and teaching the students the significance of the phrase, "O Captain, my Captain."

"Yeah? Well, maybe I'll check it out sometime. Once I get a... what is it, TV?"

Not until after Mr. Peanutbutter did!

"You don't have a TV?" Mr. Peanutbutter pressed his hands to his cheeks. "What do you do all day?!"

He'd met people who didn't own TVs before, mind you. But Kanan wasn't wearing a saggy knit cap and selling produce at a farmer's market. Or working at a coffee shop or an artisinal bakery of some sort.

"Well, until I came here, I was a freighter pilot," Kanan offered, blinking at that reaction. "And a bartender in the evenings. Not much time for TV. Here I'm still mostly just settling in. Getting used to the way things work around here. Taking the occasional evening class."

Because of the free food, but that was beside the point.

"Ohhh, you're a trucker!" A young, ponytailed and bearded trucker. Definitely hipster material. "I understand. Still adjusting after life on the open road. And bartending! That's fun!"

"It was," Kanan the space hipster agreed, figuring 'trucker' was probably close enough. "I'm not tending any bars around here, but between the teaching and the part-time job I have at the diner on Sundays, that's probably for the best. I'd have to learn all the local drinks from scratch anyway."

Teaching and working at a diner! Such a millenial. "Oh, are their culturally significant cocktails in this area?" They did have such different greetings.

"Probably," Kanan replied. "There were stops during the summer with things like ryncol and pan-galactic gargle blasters. I'm sure Fandom Island has something."

He paused.

"And if it doesn't, someone clearly has to make something up."

"And we are just those someones!"

Being, you know, both unfamiliar with the base culture they were going to purport to represent and all.

At least the base culture of Fandom Island was more or less 'eh, whoever shows up?'

"Could be an educational experience," Kanan mused.
hollywoostar: (pleased)

"About mixing drinks?"

Culturally relevant ones?

"Now see? I'm learning," Kanan mused. "You're already cut out for this teacher thing."

...

"Just don't lick any of the students."

That might get weird.

"... Then, yeah, sure, maybe."

Kanan probably should have said something about it being inappropriate, but he was fairly certain that nobody but Stance was going to lick Mr. Peanutbutter. Maybe other dogs? Cats? Just probably not students.

"Good. I'd hate to be rude. It is an odd custom, though. Not terribly hygienic."
