US History - Period 7 - 03/15/06

Hawkeye was taking class today. He leaned against the desk at the front of the classroom dressed in boots and clothes that were hidden underneath his maroon bathrobe. "Morning," he greeted. "On Monday you were told to research a little piece of history and say what you think about it. Today you get to actually say it and tell everyone what you researched, what you found and what you think about the delightful moment in the history of the United States." He took a swig of his coffee. Yeah. Coffee. Just coffee. Yep. "I'll bet there's some real doozies. Who's first?"

She's just making an entrance!

Lana talks about the United States entrance into World War II and their liberation of the Concentration camps in Germany. She talks about how horrifying it is that such an event ever happened and might just throw in a mention of the situations in Dafur and Rwanda for good measure.

[OOC: Um... not that the Mun is a Holocaust scholar or anything...]

Blair cleared his throat and stood. "I believe that a significant moment in history was when the government conspiracy to spy on it’s citizens was uncovered in 1971 with the FBI stopping it’s COINTELPRO program. Not only did they use illegal and totally not cool ways to spy on political and peace organizations, they tried to stop them from exercising their first amendment rights of free speech." He shook his head disgustedly. "They were just using government resources to be some vigilante organization and take down people who didn’t agree with The Man. They infiltrated groups, used psychological warfare, legal harassment, break-ins and even violence! It’s like they built up all this bad karma until it finally bit them in the ass and they got busted. Now it’s much safer to air your different views and organize peace-loving groups in America."

Jake pulls out his notebook and starts talking: The first reference to coffee being drunk in North America (http://www.ico.org/coffee_story.asp) is from 1668 and, soon after, coffee houses were established in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and other towns. The Boston Tea Party Of 1773 was planned in a coffee house, the Green Dragon. Both the New York Stock Exchange and the Bank of New York started in coffeehouses, in what is today the financial district known as Wall Street."

He then goes on to talk about Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu, the Dutch and the glory of Seattle. Someone better cut him off before he keeps going.

Veronica talks about the red scare in the 50s and McCarthyism and how Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as a parallel to the McCarthy trials and the Salem Witch trials.

Piper talks about the civil rights movement in the 60s. She goes on to talk about how things are better today but still need a lot of work.

Quinn raises her hand. "I heard someone say that they think the government had Marilyn Monroe killed for that whole president affair thing. Which is totally unfair. It's not her fault she was hot."
