US History - Period 7 - 03/15/06

Hawkeye was taking class today. He leaned against the desk at the front of the classroom dressed in boots and clothes that were hidden underneath his maroon bathrobe. "Morning," he greeted. "On Monday you were told to research a little piece of history and say what you think about it. Today you get to actually say it and tell everyone what you researched, what you found and what you think about the delightful moment in the history of the United States." He took a swig of his coffee. Yeah. Coffee. Just coffee. Yep. "I'll bet there's some real doozies. Who's first?"

Blair cleared his throat and stood. "I believe that a significant moment in history was when the government conspiracy to spy on it’s citizens was uncovered in 1971 with the FBI stopping it’s COINTELPRO program. Not only did they use illegal and totally not cool ways to spy on political and peace organizations, they tried to stop them from exercising their first amendment rights of free speech." He shook his head disgustedly. "They were just using government resources to be some vigilante organization and take down people who didn’t agree with The Man. They infiltrated groups, used psychological warfare, legal harassment, break-ins and even violence! It’s like they built up all this bad karma until it finally bit them in the ass and they got busted. Now it’s much safer to air your different views and organize peace-loving groups in America."
