Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Ringo," she answered, waving vaguely at the nametag still attached to her dress. "What about you?"

She tried to sound interested, but scratching at Dark Nation's head held most of her attention for the moment.

He still didn't mind.

"Rufus Shinra," he said, which really was the ultimate test to see if she recognized him.

"You're new, right?" Her expression gave absolutely no sign of recognition, so either she was a way better liar than she'd appeared earlier, or she really did have no idea who he was.

And it only made him feel like smiling, just a little. Oh yes, this was a marvelous gift.

He'd still be careful because to be otherwise would be idiocy, but... so far, Rufus had no objections.

"I'm new," he confirmed. "I take it to mean that you are not?"

"I could be!" Ringo shrugged, and grinned. "But, no. Been here about a year, now."

"Well then," he said, leaning forward slightly. "And tips for a new student?"

"Hmm." Ringo pursed her lips. "Expect to be surprised by a lot of stuff your first two or three months? This place is kinda weird. But beyond that? Make sure you spend some effort having fun."

Don't just study all the time or whatever.

"Oh, and get on good terms with your roommate. That one's important."

Oh, please. He'd make the effort to learn the layout before he locked himself in the library at the very least.

"I have not yet met my roommate," Rufus admitted. "Do you know anyone named 'Velma'?"

Ringo scowled in thought. "Um. The name seems familiar, but I don't actually know if I know who she is?"

She was pretty sure it was a girl's name, at least!

That was something! A small something, but nonetheless...

"Is it common for new students to be placed with ones who've been around for a while?" Rufus asked. "As... an extension of the sibling program, perhaps?"

If she knew the name then it was likely Velma was not a new student, after all.

"I think it's just dependent on who's got free space in their room. Like, maybe she had a roommate who left or graduated or something?"

She wasn't an expert.

"I wouldn't know," Rufus pointed out. Which was why he'd asked her.

"Well, I'm not part of the administration, so me neither."

She shrugged. "My first roommate was a new student, too, but he left the island, and my new roommate is a new student. So I've had one of each, I guess?"

"I see."

Rufus thought about that for a moment.

"It's unfortunate, is all," he said, with a glance at Dark Nation, who was still excited by the new person. "I don't know if my roommate will be alright with Dark Nation."

And if they weren't, there were going to be problems.

"Won't know until you ask, I guess." Ringo shrugged. "But I'm sure that you can work something out."

"Do you know if the school reassigns rooms?" Rufus asked. "In case of reconcilable differences?"

"I'm sure you could go to the office and ask them to, if you really needed to. I mean, I've never heard of it happening, but there's got to be some process in place for that, right?"

He gauged the way the girl was reacting and... deliberately relaxed.

"Of course," he said smoothly. "And I do hope I won't need to. I just like to be prepared. It's better that way, when someone's relying on you."

Relaxing was good! It made Ringo grin.

Which was probably why he'd done it.

"Yeah. I don't think Dark Nation would do a good job of taking care of himself. But I bet he'd find someone to do it for him pretty quickly, if he needed to. Wouldn't you boy?" She ruffled his ears.

It was entirely why he'd done it. He wasn't the most personable person, and didn't care to be, but he'd like to avoid anything that might cause trouble down the line so early on.

Dark Nation yipped happily and snuffled at Ringo's hand.

"True enough." Though Rufus had no intentions of letting anyone take care of his dog. "I'll hope that doesn't come to pass either. Do you have any pets?"

Ringo laughed. It was a warm, genuine sound. Utterly friendly.

"Not me. I'd probably be a terrible pet owner. I'm too easily distracted."

He'd only known her for the space of one conversation and yet... that did not surprise Rufus at all.

"What is it that distracts you?" he asked, keeping his voice light and easy. "Is there that much to do on the island?"

Oh, Rufus. You poor, poor boy.

"AirTrek!" Ringo's eyes were big and shining. The look of a girl who had someone voluntarily ask her about her passion.

"AirTrek," he repeated slowly.

Did he want to know?

Oh, yes, he totally wanted to know! And now he could!

Ringo unslung the backpack from her shoulder and zipped it open. She fished out a pair of boots with wheels attached to the bottom and held them out for inspection.

"They have these super-tiny, but really powerful electric motors in them."
