Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Do you know if the school reassigns rooms?" Rufus asked. "In case of reconcilable differences?"

"I'm sure you could go to the office and ask them to, if you really needed to. I mean, I've never heard of it happening, but there's got to be some process in place for that, right?"

He gauged the way the girl was reacting and... deliberately relaxed.

"Of course," he said smoothly. "And I do hope I won't need to. I just like to be prepared. It's better that way, when someone's relying on you."

Relaxing was good! It made Ringo grin.

Which was probably why he'd done it.

"Yeah. I don't think Dark Nation would do a good job of taking care of himself. But I bet he'd find someone to do it for him pretty quickly, if he needed to. Wouldn't you boy?" She ruffled his ears.

It was entirely why he'd done it. He wasn't the most personable person, and didn't care to be, but he'd like to avoid anything that might cause trouble down the line so early on.

Dark Nation yipped happily and snuffled at Ringo's hand.

"True enough." Though Rufus had no intentions of letting anyone take care of his dog. "I'll hope that doesn't come to pass either. Do you have any pets?"

Ringo laughed. It was a warm, genuine sound. Utterly friendly.

"Not me. I'd probably be a terrible pet owner. I'm too easily distracted."

He'd only known her for the space of one conversation and yet... that did not surprise Rufus at all.

"What is it that distracts you?" he asked, keeping his voice light and easy. "Is there that much to do on the island?"

Oh, Rufus. You poor, poor boy.

"AirTrek!" Ringo's eyes were big and shining. The look of a girl who had someone voluntarily ask her about her passion.

Oh gods, what had he done?

"AirTrek," he repeated slowly.

Did he want to know?

Oh, yes, he totally wanted to know! And now he could!

Ringo unslung the backpack from her shoulder and zipped it open. She fished out a pair of boots with wheels attached to the bottom and held them out for inspection.

"They have these super-tiny, but really powerful electric motors in them."

"Like a car would?" Rufus asked, reaching out to take the boots, after glancing at her for permission. "To... allow you to reach greater speeds?"

"Much greater speeds, yeah. If you've got a good pair, and you know what you're doing, you can outrun a car."

It was a good point of reference, so Ringo was glad he'd brought it up!

"Really?" Colour him genuinely intrigued. "And anyone can use them?"

"Sure, with practice. I mean, it's just a machine. Easier for some people to figure out than others, but anyone can use them."

It was commonly supposed around the ShinRa Building that Rufus did nothing, cared for nothing, and bothered with nothing.

This was mostly because Rufus spent a great deal of time enforcing all those misconceptions.

"And do you teach this?" he asked. "Or are there classes elsewhere for it?"

Rufus was not heavily into sports, but he was much, much fitter than anyone at home would know, and the appeal of having an alternate form of transportation was a strong one.

Tseng would be so angry if I had another way to avoid him.

"Oh, sure!" Ringo beamed. "I'm glad to teach anyone who's interested about them. As much as they want to learn, that is."

Was he volunteering? Please say yes!

Ringo tried to look coy. "You interested?" She was pretty transparently hoping for a yes.

Rufus was mildly appalled at the transparency of the look she was giving him. That didn't show on his face though.

You never showed disdain when someone was offering you what you wanted from them.

"I am," he confirmed. "What are the costs associated with this?"

"Oh, time, mostly. I mean, if you want to do some customization on your ATs, you'd need to get parts." Obviously he'd do the actual customization himself, right? Because that was how you were supposed to do it!

"And how much time mostly depends on how good you want to get."

"That seems reasonable," Rufus agreed, though he was unsure about the customizing his own parts bit. Maybe she taught that as well? "What sort of customization is there to do?"

"Oh, quite a bit of stuff." Ringo was really warming to the topic. "ATs are controlled by body movement, and everyone has different centers of balance, and ways of moving. So making adjustments so that everything feels right is important. Beyond that, people have different priorities. Top speed, acceleration, maneuverability, traction. You end up making trade-offs between them to figure out what's right for you."

"Are there books to read up on the theory?" he asked curiously. "Or is it something that must be learned in practice? Even the name--is there a way to take to the air?"

"Huh. I don't know. There might be some books?" Ringo'd never bothered to check.

"And, yeah, most people who get serious about AirTrek do it for the air time. I mean, you can't literally fly, but it can feel like it sometimes."

"I'd like to try," he said decisively. "And I shall look for books on it."

Ringo beamed at him. "Well, I'm in room 506, so you're welcome to come stop by any time you like."

"Or, if you see me around, you can grab me."

"Oh, if you want, I could go ahead an put a pair together for you. What size do you wear?"
