Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She counted quickly on her fingers. "Three days then. They waited to long to call me, so I expended a great deal of energy. I guess I slept almost a full day afterwards. Huh."

That probably wasn't good.

"But," Kaylin said, brightening up, "Mother and baby are both well. She'd fallen down a staircase and had a great deal of internal injuries, but she's well now."

She wasn't quite sure how she'd fixed the wrong things, had almost gotten lost in the intricacies of it all, but it had worked!

"So long as you've had your sleep and food after." He offered her some mixed-fruit juice to go with the sandwiches. "You seem to have done quite well for yourself."

Kaylin took the juice and drank it down thirstily. She began to wipe her mouth on her sleeve, but caught herself and used a napkin instead. "Sorry," she said a little sheepishly.

"so, have you been well?"

Hannibal smirked and handed her a napkin. "I have been. Jono and I have been planning our wedding, when the island hasn't been playing its various tricks."

She rolled her eyes. "This island is crazy. When I left everything was candy and now... I don't know what it is."

Kaylin wasn't one for tact, bless her, so Hannibal probably shouldn't be surprised at her next question. "Are you guys really rich? Or like secret lords or something? Because in Elantra usually people just... well, they don't take this kind of time to do everything."

Hannibal chuckled. He was used to Kaylin's lack of tact by now, yes.

"We are both rich and Hannibal might be a lord, but the jury was out on that, but in our worlds people often take this long. Or longer. Weddings are a very involved and complex undertaking. What do they do in Elantra?"

"I've never known anyone personally who got married," she admitted. "In the fiefs you mostly just, well, maybe you get a priest to say a blessing or something, but mostly you just live with whoever it is. Most regular people do the blessing thing and they maybe, well, have a dinner for family and friends. Barrani probably take a million years to do anything, but since they can pretty much live forever it doesn't matter."

Kaylin shook her head. "I've heard that rich people or lords or whatever do all sorts of stupid fancy stuff, but I don't know much about it. And it's not like I'll probably ever do anything like that anyway."

Hannibal nodded. "It's much the same here, only even those who aren't rich like to plan and spend money as though they are. It is often as much of a performance for others as for the couple. But it is at its core a ceremony with a blessing, and food for family and friends."

"It still seems a little crazy," Kaylin admitted. "But if it makes you happy, then I'm glad for you."

No one would ever catch her doing anything like that, though.

"Thank you." Hannibal gave her a little bow. "Personally, I enjoy the planning as well. But you know I am strange like that."

Next on the menu was small bites of biscotti with chocolate. And coffee, but he'd keep that for himself; Kaylin needed sleep more than caffeine, generally.

"What are your classes this term?"

"Uh..." This was not high on Kaylin's list of fun things to remember. Ask her some obscure law of Elantra and she'd be all over it, but this...

"Uh... something about a con, something Karla is teaching, something about doing something with jerks... Oh! And Flying!" Now that had her face glowing!

"Oh yes! And seeing Karla! I've missed her. Not that I'm sure she'll remember me or anything, but it will be nice to see her."

She wasn't really aware of it, but people tended to remember Kaylin. Not always for good reasons, but she was remembered.

"It will," Hannibal agreed. "And I'm certain she will remember you."

There weren't, after all, that many students here.

Kaylin shrugged as if it didn't really matter either way. "Maybe. It's been a while and she's had a baby and all."

Hannibal raised an eyebrow. "Having a baby would make her forget students?"

"Well, she'd be busy, you know?" Kaylin said, ducking her head a little bit. "And it's not like I was a great student or anything."

Hannibal smiled at her. "I can assure you you are quite memorable."

Possibly not for the reasons she'd want to be, but it was true.

Kaylin sighed and looked glum. "I've had instructors tell me they wish they could forgot me a lot."

Hannibal chuckled. "I assure you, I've no wish to forget you at all. Nor, I imagine, has Karla."

"Really?" Kaylin said. "I mean, I'm glad about that, but it always surprises me when teachers don't really dislike me."

Hannibal gestured at the food. "I don't feed people I dislike like this."

He usually fed them their own body parts instead.

Kaylin laughed and blushed a little. "I ate practically all of your food. I'm sorry."

Hannibal grinned back. "I gave it to you, didn't I?" He took the last few sandwiches out and wrapped them up neatly in the butcher paper they'd all been wrapped in, then handed her the packet. "For later."

Kaylin thought briefly about protesting, but they were really great sandwiches and she didn't really want to. So she didn't.

"Thanks," she said. "You always seem to be feeding me. Not that I'm complaining, but i do feed myself. When I think of it at least. It's easy here where there's always food around."
