Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 17, Period 1, 03.14.06

[OOC: Hi. You get relatively uncreative and quickly written lecture today. Sorry! Needed sleep! And I'm running slightly late, so the EC and Metaphor will be up a little later. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was standing at the podium at the front of the room and Lockheed was on his normal bookshelf, as usual.

"Good morning, students! Welcome back from break! I hope you all had a good one! And congratulations to anyone who did well in the animal balancing contest last night. Just be glad there wasn't a moose."

"Okay, today, we're talking about superheroes. A superhero is, essentially, a vigilante with a flashier style and usually a moral center more in line with that of the rest of society. If you excuse the whole blatantly taking the law into their own hands thing, at least."

"However, the fact that superheroes seem to follow most of societies guidelines (don't kill, don't steal, try not to be a massive jerk) combined with the fact that in today's society, they usually disguise their identity, all while taking the law into their own hands means that some people," with that, Rory began to pass out a printed out editorial from The Daily Bugle that basically said that superheroes were the worst thing ever, "think of them as subversive. They're trying to wheel and deal their way into the hearts of society while doing whatever they please."

"Please remember that in this class, I am a teacher first and a superhero second. You can speak freely. With that in mind, today's question is, in general, what do you think of superheroes? Good people? Menaces? Misguided fools? Fashion disasters? Have you ever met a superhero outside of Fandom? What, in short, is the deal?"

"This week's metaphor is clowns. And your Extra Credit for this week is to give someone else in the room a superhero name. Just remember, The Tick and The Caffeinator are already taken."

"No offense Professor the Tick, but most of these superheroes seem, well, a little insane."

"I think you've got to respect a superhero who manages to use his powers for the greater good without letting it get to his head and take abuse of it," Cameron says.

"I've never seen an instance where they couldn't get the job done," Aeryn says. "I don't think it falls into sheer vigilantism, so I don't see a problem with it."

Janet showed up to class with an excuse note for Angel to give to Professor Tick.

"I don't have a problem with superheroes," Janet said. "Are they really trying to get into the hearts of society, or are they just trying to do a job that other people can't necessarily get done?"

Marty shrugged. "I've never saw a real life superhero until I came to Fandom. Everything I seen here leads me to believe they fight the good fight. Each one might have their own reasons or methodology on why, but the overall goal seems to be the same."

"I wouldn't say they were fashion disasters per se, but they certainly have an interesting fashion sense," Archie says. "Alarmingly flamboyant, and in some cases their sense of design practicality seems to be questionable."

Rory just bit her lip and refrained from saying anything about superheroes, their sanity, or even their fashion sense.

"Well, maybe I'm biased, but, uh... I really think superheroes are great. Of course, where I come from we don't need to disguise our identities anymore or work outside the law, but still," Bridge shrugs.

"When I was doing some research a few months ago, I ran across an article on Edna Mode, who designs costumes for superheroes. The kind of thing that's attractive but lets them fight crime." Parker grinned. "She sounded like her superpower was making sure people didn't look stupid. Always something to be applauded."

"I think, on the whole, that superheroes are cool. But I think there are people who do superhero type things and don't get enough credit for them."

Metaphor

Clowns epitomize the diverse view of Justice that our society has. Some people see clowns as cute and fun and a positive thing. Then there are others who are terrified of clowns and think they are the most evil thing on the planet aside from mimes. And a third group has a very skewed view of the lifestyle of a clown. shut up, i'm still scarred from a documentary about clown sex that i saw five minutes of ten years ago.

EC

Marty = The Mad Pinger

[i'll actually participate later -- but i couldn't resist doing these!]

If you're a criminal and not watching closely, a clown superhero could hit you in the face with a Pie of Justice.

Extra credit - I think Sam Carter should be called The Supernova. Just because I like the name.

Clowns are like Mimes. They must be puched often in the name of Justice because otherwise they will read good books and break the hearts of girls who love them so. Plus they usually have oversized shoes and for some reason that freaks me out.

EC:
Veronica = Cluemaster
Jaye = Glitter Gal
Aeryn = OMGDONTHURTME!
Angel = Hair Boy
Callisto = Das Burninator
Rory = The Flailinator
Parker = Killer Queen
Bridge = The Wiggler
Sam = Brainiac
Janet = Shrimpy
Archie = Captain Pretty-boy
Cameron = The-big-whiny-baby-who-needs-to-get-over-it-already
Logan = Obnoxious Man

Justice, like a clown, can inspire anything from amusement to terror in the beholder, and perhaps more than one such emotion at once. Also like a clown, the costume of justice can appear unwieldy or entirely unpractical -- but one never knows what tricks it may have concealed in that ridiculous-looking outfit. Or even small animals. Perhaps a small Puffin of Justice.

Extra Credit
Veronica Mars - Cookie-baking Crimefighter

Clowns? Clowns. Clowns!

Clowns are like superheroes and vigilantes. Inside the three rings of Justice, clowns are entertaining and make people happy, like law enforcement officials. Outside the circus, they can be frightening, although like superheroes, they are still doing their jobs when standing on streetcorners, waving to people, or performing at children's parties. But out on their own, they can be frightening to the populace, like vigilantes, popping up and entertaining without warning.

EC:
Callisto: the Blonde Blitzkrieg
Marty: Der Snarkmeister
Veronica: Investigator Intellinator
Archie: Lieutenant Flirt
Aeryn: Justice Commando
Rory: Crazy Booker
Jaye: CrackRadioWonder
Janet: Dr. Atilla
Angel: BrowBoy, and his sidekick, 'Steve'
Carter: The Quantum Destroyer
