Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You have electric engines in your shoes with wheels?" If that was true her brother would no doubt find it exciting. Lucille herself just did her best not to look confused.

"Yep!" Ringo grinned. "I could show you, if you like?"

Lucille had little interest in going very fast on shoes with wheels, but at least she would be able to describe something in her next letter to Thomas that he would find intriguing.

"Give me a second then." Ringo grinned and hopped up to sit on the table while she pulled her feet up so that she could take her shoes off and slip on the ATs in their place.

Lucille just watched, just a little intrigued. "So, are these shoes common where you are from?"

"Well, most people are aware of them, and they're not terribly uncommon, but not everyone has them or anything."

Ringo smiled. "So if you wanted a pair for yourself, I'm sure I could find some in your size."

She finished securing them on her feet and then flexed her toes slightly, causing the wheels to spin slowly in place with a soft whine. "There we go," she declared.

"It might not be suitable for me," she said hastily. "But I'm sure my brother would find the construction fascinating. What country are you from then? And what... time?" That last question still bothered her.

"Well, you can't know for sure if you don't try them, but if they don't look fun to you, you don't have to, you know?"

Ringo smiled. "I'm from Japan. In the mid-twenty-first century. What about you?" Something older, she was going to guess.

Lucille decided to ignore the first comment, and just said: "I am from England, in 1885."

"Oh, wow!" Ringo's eyes went wide. "I bet that's way different than here!" No duh, Ringo.

"Yes, quite." Lucille would have agreed on the 'no duh' sentiment. "Did you find this place similar to your home?"

Or was it just that she was happy as long as she had her rolling shoes?

Ringo laughed. "Not even close," she answered. "I mean, there's still TV and cell phones and stuff, but Tokyo is huge, and Fandom is kind of a tiny little town."

She shrugged. "But I've still met some really nice people here, so I can't complain too much."

"Nice people is such a blessing." No, Lucille didn't actually mean that, which might be obvious if you paid attention to that sort of thing.

"And by the sound of it you have an interest in modern inventions." Which she assumed TV and cellphones to be.

"I don't know if I'd say that." Ringo shrugged. "I mean, I like tech, and I'm pretty good at tinkering with AirTrek, but mostly I just have an interest in having fun." She hadn't had a lot of practice at it before she came to the island, so she was trying to make up for lost time.

"And are there other kinds of fun than... AirTrek?" The ratio of sarcasm and politeness in Lucille's voice was gradually shifting towards the former.

Ringo hadn't noticed yet. She wasn't oblivious, but she was a bit naive. And willing to give people the benefit of the doubt.

"Well, of course." Ringo grinned, then looked curiously at Lucille. "And what do you do for fun?"

"I read books, I play the piano," she replied, shrugging one shoulder lightly. "Perhaps we enjoy different things."

"Hey, nothing wrong with books. And I think it's really cool that you play music!" She genuinely did, too. "It takes a lot of practice to get good at that sort of thing, right?" And Ringo respected anything that took a lot of practice.

Lucille was becoming increasingly frustrated. Not only was Ringo worthy of ridicule for her rolling shoes, she was also perfectly nice and friendly. This didn't make things easy.

Uncomfortably, Lucille replied: "It does."

Well, if Lucille gave Ringo enough time, there was a good chance she'd manage to say something stupid or careless. Ringo didn't have the best filters between her brain and her mouth.

"Did you start learning really young?" Ringo asked curiously.

"I did," Lucille confirmed. "It's part of a proper education for a lady, after all." Not that she had cared for all of the other parts. "Are learning to use the rolling shoes part of your education?"

What an interesting question. "I hadn't really thought about it that way, but I guess maybe it was?" Ringo shrugged a bit awkwardly. "I mean, I was basically raised learning it."

"Oh, why?" It was a rather peculiar thing, after all.

Ringo pursed her lips thoughtfully, not sure how to put things. "Well, I was part of the project that invented the technology, and they needed someone to test it. So I was part of that group."

She wasn't sure that she could really explain genetically engineered humans grown in a lab to someone from the 1800s, so she was going to avoid that for now.

Even what Ringo did say made very little sense to Lucille, so all she said was: "I see. At least you enjoy it."
