Face was sitting very, very still behind the collections desk, keeping the candles on his head as far away from the very, very flammable books as he could.

Face is here because he has to be, why are you?

This was not how he'd expected to spend today's shift.

"Can this island get any more ridiculous?" Cassandra growled, stepping - very carefully - into the library.

She was staying well away from the books. And the counter.

"It's probably going to take that as a challenge," Face said dryly.

"Perhaps the librarian should have locked the library for the day," Cassandra mused. "This cannot be good for the books."

"They don't seem to be setting anything else off." Face grimaced. "Not that I'm eager to test that theory." Hence the stillness.

"You are showing unusual restraint," Cassandra agreed, sounding like she was very much impressed by this. (No, really.) "Still, considering how little you enjoy actually working... perhaps it would be best if you left early."

For completely unselfish reasons, of course.

"The thought had occurred to me." Though not wanting to die in a fire was a rather more selfish reason. "Any ideas what I could so with my suddenly free afternoon?"

Besides try not to set fires.

Was Cassandra fidgeting? Only a little bit.

"It is cloudy out," she said, "I thought perhaps we could share a meal. Somewhere less... flammable."

Face grinned. "I'd like that."

Of course he'd like it more if he didn't have to worry about setting his girlfriend on fire, but she probably wouldn't be encouraging him to skip work if that wasn't a factor.

There was a reason she wasn't hinting at anything more... involved... than having lunch together. Well, multiple reasons. But right now the food played a factor.

"Come, then," Cassandra said, motioning at him. "If you can get out behind that counter without bumping into anything."

"I'll have you know I have excellent spatial awareness," Face informed her as he manoeuvred his way around the desk. A fact was likely going to save his life more than once in the future.

"So you claim," Cassandra said mildly. (Or teasingly. The two were easy to mix up.) "What manner of food would you like, Garik? We could go to a restaurant."

"Lady's choice," Face said, sketching a bow with his upper body while somehow managing not to move his head overly. "Person who suggests the date also gets to suggest the venue."

Cassandra beamed - then realized she was beaming and wrestled the smile under some level of control. "I enjoyed the Thai food," she said. "...And they have high ceilings. Not that this needs to have any bearing on our plans, but it may be practical."

"It'll ruin my reputation to admit it, but sometimes I'm a fan of practical."

"I will tell no one," Cassandra said dryly. "It would be a sad day if any realized you were not always completely ridiculous."

"Which is why I'm forever grateful my secret is safe with you," Face replied, hand over his heart.

Cassandra shook her head at him.

Then, wordless, she reached to pry the hand from his heart, tugging him towards the exit.

The prying required remarkably little effort, Face curling his fingers through hers as he obediently followed her.

"There," Cassandra said, smiling again. "That should greatly decrease the, ah, fire hazard."

"I'd be awkward if the library got burnt down by one of the aides," Face agreed.

"I doubt the librarian would appreciate it," Cassandra agreed, tugging him towards the exit. "Hopefully these candles will be dispelled sooner rather than later."

"I thought you'd approve of something that kept me under control," Face teased.

"I approve of you exercising self-control," Cassandra said lightly. "Not being kept under duress by a set of magical candles."

If he's around.
