School Auditorium: MSND Rehearsal (1-5 p.m. FST)

All members of the production got an email this morning telling them to report to the auditorium at 1 p.m. EST to rehearse acts I and II and the "extra" bits of the play. When they gather, they will find Dream sitting on the bare stage, looking rather impatient.

"You are here to rehearse the play. I believe you can manage that. If you are playing the Tooth Fairy,
Steve Austin, Jaime Sommers, Lobster, Drunken Pirate, Kickass Ninja or Chuck Norris, please report to the orchestra pit to discuss your roles with me. Otherwise, read through Acts I and II in their entirety."

That said, Dream moves to the orchestra pit and takes a seat. He may be waiting for the student directors to join him.

Dream reads the part in a voice that is resonant, if oddly flat at times.

Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour
Draws on apace; four happy days bring in
Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow
This old moon wanes! she lingers my desires,
Like to a step-dame or a dowager
Long withering out a young man revenue.

"Four days will quickly steep themselves in night;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time;
And then the moon, like to a silver bow
New-bent in heaven, shall behold the night
Of our solemnities."

Go, Philostrate,
Stir up the Athenian youth to merriments;
Awake the pert and nimble spirit of mirth;
Turn melancholy forth to funerals;
The pale companion is not for our pomp.

Hippolyta, I woo'd thee with my sword,
And won thy love, doing thee injuries;
But I will wed thee in another key,
With pomp, with triumph and with revelling.

"Miss Trebond, the next line is yours."

"Um...Happy be Theseus, our renowned duke?." Egeus would be very confused for this play.

Thanks, good Egeus: what's the news with thee?

Full of vexation come I, with complaint
Against my child, my daughter Hermia.
Stand forth, Demetrius. My noble lord,
This man hath my consent to marry her.
Stand forth, Lysander: and my gracious duke,
This man hath bewitch'd the bosom of my child;
Thou, thou, Lysander, thou hast given her rhymes,
And interchanged love-tokens with my child:
Thou hast by moonlight at her window sung,
With feigning voice verses of feigning love,
And stolen the impression of her fantasy
With bracelets of thy hair, rings, gawds, conceits,
Knacks, trifles, nosegays, sweetmeats, messengers
Of strong prevailment in unharden'd youth:
With cunning hast thou filch'd my daughter's heart,
Turn'd her obedience, which is due to me,
To stubborn harshness: and, my gracious duke,
Be it so she; will not here before your grace
Consent to marry with Demetrius,
I beg the ancient privilege of Athens,
As she is mine, I may dispose of her:
Which shall be either to this gentleman
Or to her death, according to our law
Immediately provided in that case.

Alanna sighed at the end of her speech. "I hate myself."

"Why do you hate yourself?" Dream asked. Then he summoned Nadia. "Miss Santos, you're next."

What say you, Hermia? be advised fair maid:
To you your father should be as a god;
One that composed your beauties, yea, and one
To whom you are but as a form in wax
By him imprinted and within his power
To leave the figure or disfigure it.
Demetrius is a worthy gentleman.

Nadia panicked slightly, trying to remember her line, then realized it was one of the short ones. She effected an unruly, daughterly pout.

So is Lysander.

In himself he is;
But in this kind, wanting your father's voice,
The other must be held the worthier.

Dream appeared pleased by Nadia's performance.

Nadia crossed her arms and gave Alanna a dark look.

I would my father look'd but with my eyes.

It was a good thing she'd finally figured out what her lines meant, because otherwise she'd worry about Egeus actually removing Hermia's eyes, and ew, gross,

Rather your eyes must with his judgment look.

There are a lot of short lines right here, and Dream rattles Hamlet's part off , barely glancing at his script.

Hamlet finally shows up late and little out of breath because ~~his mun does schoolwork Sunday afternoons~~ he missed reading the email earlier.

"I apologize for arriving so late. Where have you read to in the scene?"

Nadia smiled at Hamlet, then glanced at Dream to see if he wanted them to take the scene back so Hamlet could do his lines, or if he wanted them to go on.

"Go on from where you are, then," Dream told Nadia as he resumed his seat.

Nadia nodded and took a moment to remember her line. It was longer, this time. She added a touch of pleading to the anger in her voice as she went through the small speech.

I do entreat your grace to pardon me.
I know not by what power I am made bold,
Nor how it may concern my modesty,
In such a presence here to plead my thoughts;
But I beseech your grace that I may know
The worst that may befall me in this case,
If I refuse to wed Demetrius.

She looked at Hamlet and Alanna, waiting for the next line.

Hamlet continues the play.

"To, "I do entreat your grace to pardon me," Dream answered.

[OOC: Hope you didn't mind me reading for you -- I just wanted to get the rehearsal started.]

"Ah, thank you." He flips through the script until he gets to the right part.

"Either to die the death or to abjure
For ever the society of men.
Therefore, fair Hermia, question your desires;
Know of your youth, examine well your blood,
Whether, if you yield not to your father's choice,
You can endure the livery of a nun,
For aye to be in shady cloister mew'd,
To live a barren sister all your life,
Chanting faint hymns to the cold fruitless moon.
Thrice-blessed they that master so their blood,
To undergo such maiden pilgrimage;
But earthlier happy is the rose distill'd,
Than that which withering on the virgin thorn
Grows, lives and dies in single blessedness."

[OOC: Nah, no prob. I'm not usually around until the evenings, so that's fine.]

Pippi decides that it's a good thing the Duke and Hyppolita are not married yet or there'd be no solemnities tonight as a result of that little speach.

Nadia's expression went from shocked to angry to determined.

So will I grow, so live, so die, my lord,
Ere I will my virgin patent up
Unto his lordship, whose unwished yoke
My soul consents not to give sovereignty.

Blair rushed in and spoke breathlessly.

You have her father's love, Demetrius;
Let me have Hermia's: do you marry him.

Looking around he groaned. "Oops...spoke too soon, didn't I?"

Nadia smiled. "A little bit. But rushing to a girl's rescue isn't a bad thing."

"Like you need to be rescued!" Blair grinned and winked. "But I'm here, fair Hermia to rescue you from your life of...of...actually, besides this whole marriage problem, life isn't that bad for you."

Nadia curtseyed slightly. "Thank you, fair Lysander. It's the thought that counts."

Blair tilted his head. "Do I count as fair? Maybe you should call me hunky Lysander...or strikingly handsome Lysander? I need to get that leg up on Demetrius!"
