Library, Sunday

Unlike last week, Face was not napping during his shift today. Instead he was alternatively browsing through various books from the poetry section and engaging in some very important research. Research that occasionally turned the tips of his ears pink.

Because your aide was spending a lot of time sitting behind the desk today.

Behind the desk. Not getting up.

"Garik," Cassandra said, smiling at him as she stepped inside.

He looked active. That meant she did not have to scold him for being lazy this time. "You look rather busy."

"Cassandra." Face closed the book he was reading. Then put it down. Behind the desk. "Not so busy I don't have time to talk."

Constantine, not an exacting taskmaster.

"Good," she said, and now she wasn't so much smiling as beaming. She walked towards the desk and pulled up a chair. "What are you reading?"

Face grinned back, because that kind of smile was infectious.

"Poetry, mostly." Not a lie, most of what he'd been reading today was poetry. Just not that book.

"Are you still studying it?" And not doing a great deal to deter her from smiling, still. "Have you found anything of interest?"

"A few." Face started thumbing through the stack of books for the ones he'd marked. "Some of them are quite sweet. Others I wouldn't really describe as sweet, exactly."

"No?" Cassandra's smile made way for a curious expression. Perhaps with a mild raise of her eyebrows that indicated she wondered if she was going to have to disapprove of something sooner rather than later.

"They're not terrible or anything," Face assured her, smiling impishly as he found the book he wanted.

Lady, I will touch you with my mind.

me suddenly a smile, shyly obscene

His voice dropped down conspiratorially for the next line.

Lady I will touch you with my mind.

lightly and you utterly will become

There was also a drawing, but he figured mentioning that was just inviting trouble.

Predictably, Cassandra went red.

"Garik," she said. "You are working!"

Yes, not showing her the drawing was definitely a wise choice.

"In a library," Face pointed out, because that totally made everything better. "Where do you think I found these books?"

"I would think you are supposed to check them out and take them to your room," Cassandra said, aiming for chastising but winding up mostly with flustered.

Face had actually saved the best poem in that book for later.

"But I couldn't do that," he said piously. "I'm working."

Face, this was a very good way to ensure you weren't likely to have sex again.

"I would hardly call looking up smut 'working'," Cassandra muttered.

"It's poetry," Face protested. Smutty poetry. "It's artistic."

Never let him find out about the invisible, naked Andraste sculpture, he'd have opinions on that.

Now, now, that was an important part of-- well, they'd had their reasons to render it invisible. Important reasons.

"It is smutty art," Cassandra retorted. "I hardly see how it makes any difference."

And no doubt every student of the form who had to study the statue's technique was thankful for those important reasons.

"If it wasn't art it wouldn't be in a library." Flawless logic.

"Again," Cassandra said, "You are working."

And as long as they were arguing, he wasn't making her blush in public again.

"And reading books from the library is part of my job." Especially if he could make his girlfriend blush while doing so.

"Isn't it merely your job to check in and check out books?" Cassandra asked. "In fact, I had started to believe it largely involved sleeping."

Way harsh, Cassandra.

"And to make displays," Face said. "I have to read them to know what to put out."

"And you were planning to make a display of smutty poetry?"

Admittedly, that kind of thing would be rather popular under a subset of the student body.

... including Cass.

"It's a work in progress." Well now that he'd talked himself into a corner he was. "Of course I'll need some second opinions on what works."

Maybe that pirate girl who kept making the radio with her flirting would have some ideas.

Cassandra rubbed at her forehead. "You cannot be serious."

Face only gave her his most innocent expression in reply.

"Ugh," Cassandra said. Predictably. "Give me the book."

"Whatever you say," Face replied offering her the book. He had others.

Please remember you weren't allowed to stab school property, Cass.

She wasn't allowed to stab some of the extremely valuable maps belonging to the Inquisition either, but did you think that had ever stopped her?

Cassandra took the book, squinting at him. "Is the school actually paying you for this?"

Face... had no idea.

"I think I get extra credit?" Not that marks really mattered at this school.

"That makes this somewhat more bearable," Cassandra muttered.

Somewhat.

"You're saying you don't like these kind of poems," Face asked.

So very, very innocently.

Cassandra coughed.

"I am saying they are... inappropriate for your work hours."

Face propped his chin up on his hands. "And my non-work hours?"

"...T-those are not under discussion at the moment," Cassandra said.

She was trying to keep her Very Cross look here, Garik.

That'd probably work better if Very Cross looks were more effective on him.

"But they could be."

Cassandra's answering disgusted noise was less of an 'ugh' and more of a 'grlkggkjlsjsdkjlsk'.

It was probably a good thing that Face had enough self-control not to start giggling.

"I am leaving," Cassandra told him firmly.

"Without even a goodbye kiss?"

Face Loran, you did not deserve one, you little shit.

Cassandra rolled her eyes at him.

Then whacked him very lightly with the book.

Face did start laughing after the book made contact. "Sorry."

It works better if you actually sound sorry, Face.

"You will make this up to me later," Cassandra said firmly.

Because she did not actually enjoy being cross at him and would welcome any excuse to stop being it.

"Of course," Face agreed easily, because he enjoyed teasing her, not actually making her upset. "Just let me know what you want me to do, in my non work hours."

Or possibly he had a latent suicidal streak.

Cassandra sighed loudly, wished briefly for a dagger she could deposit in the desk, then spun around and stalked out of the library.

If he's around.
