Ethics, Wednesday, September 2, 2015 [2nd period]

There were two men in long robes standing in front of the class, one significantly taller (and smugger) than the other. (Mind you, the second might have easily been smug, as well, but his expression was largely hidden behind his beard.)

"My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi," said the shorter one of the pair. "Welcome to Ethics. Over the next few months, we will be discussing various topics and problems pertaining to, well, ethics." He smiled a little. "We do not pretend to know the perfect definition of good ethics, if there even is such a thing, so we prefer to let this class be a conversation."

"Which means that everyone in the class needs to listen to everyone else, too," Anakin said. "We encourage discussions, but they can't happen if someone gets stoopa about ideas that aren't what they grew up with. This is a school located in an interdimensional nexus, so chances are there's going to be something that shocks you about someone else. For instance, I learned that this planet likes to make giant sculptures out of butter for fun, and I find that very, very bizarre."

Just at the Iowa State Fair, Anakin, not the entire planet.

"If that statement didn't make it perfectly clear," Obi-Wan said, amused, "Master Skywalker and I are not from this planet." He slipped his hands into his sleeves. "Now, it is tradition for this class to begin with a round of 'two truths and a lie', to get the conversation going. Anakin?"

Anakin smiled. Well, quirked up his lips. "I have two tattoos," he began, "I've saved Master Kenobi's life ten different times, and I've been married three times."

"As for myself," Obi-Wan said, "I was once destined to become a farmer, I've fought in a civil war, and I very much enjoy flying a speeder."

"Take your best guesses on us, and then give us your two truths and a 2lie," Anakin said. "We'll start with...you."

Unlike yesterday Isabela was not hungover during class today...instead she'd had rum for breakfast.

She was also eyeing Anakin and Obi-Wan speculatively.

Jasper was pretty good at picking up lies if the other person wasn't on his level of observation. Anakin seemed to be pretty impenetrable. He reminded Jasper of his father in a way.

So, he guessed, "It's the marriage one." He tried to sound confident though he wasn't really that sure.

Isabela thought it was the marriages, if someone who looked as young as him had been married three times there was something fishy going on.

"Tattoos," was what she actually said. "Unless you want to prove you got them?"

Jasper thought about his two truths for awhile before his turn came around. He didn't plan on revealing anything too personal, of course. And, considering the way he was, his delivery would probably make it incredibly hard to pick up what was truth and lie. It'd be a lucky guess for anyone who managed to pick correctly.

"I'm a hemophiliac, I'm a good tracker, and I've got a secret."

That last one was a cop out because who didn't have a secret?

"You have a secret," Obi-Wan echoed. "I see. That can't possibly be true."

He was joking, naturally.

Maria was usually very bad at things like this, but she tried. Again. She thought carefully before giving her information.

"My mother is a modern day hippy. I got my belly button pierced in an act of rebellion against the people around me. I've helped save someone's life at least twice."

"The second one," Jasper decided after some brief thought. Mainly because he thought rebellion would be a little more over the top than just a piercing but he came from a different place, he knew.

"I've considered converting to the Qun, I know my mother loved me more than anything in the world, I stole a ship," Isabela said all with the same, easy delivery.

The lie wasn't the one you'd expect.

What made her lie hard to pick out was that Jasper didn't really understand one thing she said so he couldn't piece it out from there.

"Second one," he decided, going for the lengthy one with more detail than the two others. It wasn't a great guess but he wasn't putting that much effort into things either.

"I've been expelled from school before, I was born with green eyes, and I've never had a drink," Gwen said.

Lottie looked thoughtful for several moments. "My favorite music is black metal," she said. "I once helped a troll go on a date with a reporter, and I've been thrown into a lake for trying to date a selkie's exboyfriend."

Let it be stated for the record that Merrill was really not very good at lying.

"Let's see . . . I was very young when my magic manifested. I'm not very used to most things here yet, and -- oh, I don't like animals very much."

The guilty look on her face and the way she hastily tacked that third item onto the list pretty much gave it away as the lie.
