Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of moddable food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Parker's gaze became introspective, even as she filched more food off Hardison's plate. "Yeah," she said, subdued. "That would've been... useful. Once." She cocked her head and said, "Did she believe you about stuff?"

"She's been on the island for awhile now," Hardison said. "So that ain't a worry. Once you see half the island sucked up by aliens, it makes acceptin' everything else that much easier." He glanced at Parker, watching her steal his food with fondness. "No teachin' buddy for you, babe?"

"Nope." She nibbled her stolen plunder and said, "I got pulled into Sparkle's thing, and thought I might not be here at all, so. Didn't want to let anyone down."

"Fair," Hardison said. That was his girl, always thinking, always considering possibilities. "By the way, I sent you a buncha listin's that I found that we should check out. Most are on the market, but there are a few that we might be able to convince the owners to sell to us we make 'em a decent enough offer."

There was no one to con, no one to make money off of for this. It was all going to be strictly out of profit, operating on a loss. Not a single one of them cared.

It was gonna be worth it. The kids would have in their teen years what Parker didn't get until she was nearly 30.

"Cool. I had another idea, too. Grants. I know there's a ton out there, and they go to whoever can write the best letters or explanations... Do you think we could find a few to take on the ongoing costs?"

She leaned in and gave him a sticky kiss on the cheek. "Did I say thank-you yet, for jumping on this as fast as you did?"

"That's more a long term goal," Hardison said. "Ain't somethin' we can get set up by Tuesday. I mean, if we wanna do it all aboveboard an' all."

They could do this fast or they could do it legally. Whichever Parker wanted, he'd do.

He grinned at her kiss and happily returned it. "You know you ain't gotta. This is important to me, too."

"I know." But maybe that's why there were thank-yous; when the feelings were too big for explanations. Short-hand for everything else. "Long-term, then. We don't want anyone else knocking holes in this for them. They deserve better than to be disappointed again."

"Yeah, naw, anything we get, it's gonna be iron-clad. Ain't gonna let a buncha NIMBYs toss these kids out of their home again," Hardison promised. "If I gotta buy up half the street to make that happen, yo, that's what I'll do."

The problem was Lewis had tried too high, in a neighborhood where people's pocketbooks eclipsed their compassion. They needed a neighborhood that was a little better than the one he'd grown up in, where people still considered themselves part of a community.
