Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of moddable food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Then no, I don't think we've got any of those. There are ghosts and some vampires, though. And aliens. And a talking pony."

"I suppose now would be the time to admit that I have been something of a monster hunter in the recent past, with a specialty in the punching of ghosts," Frank said, having a general sense of the temperature of the figurative room. "But I tried to make sure they were malevolent, and furthermore I'm far more interested in being drunk than mucking about with any of that any more."

"Then I think you'll probably get along fine," Raven said. "And we do get the occasional malevolence coming through, so you'll have the opportunity for more punching too, if you decide you miss it."

"I will if I have to, or if it in any way prevents the supply of alcohol from reaching the island," Frank said, although you probably could have guessed that part.

"You really are quite fond of your booze, aren't you," Raven noted. "Any particular preferences? So I know what to get you on birthdays and holidays."

"Stick with any kind of liquor and you'll have a devoted pretend little brother for as long as you keep giving me liquor," Frank said.

"Let's see... School, supernatural, talking pony... Oh! What do you have in the ways of bars and churches?" Frank asked. "One to avoid and one to frequent. I'll leave it up to you to figure out which is which for fun."

"Well, there's a stumper. There are two bars in town. Caritas doesn't card, Devil's Nest does. And there's one church, called . . . St. Fandom or something?" Raven had never been to the church. "Something like that."

"Well, now I have a vague idea of the name of the place I'm avoiding," Frank said. "Personal reasons. But what do you mean with this whole 'carding' thing? You need a special card of some sort to get them to bring you alcohol? That doesn't seem very American."

He had never dealt with IDs. Yet he had so much liquor. Truly, it was a mystery the likes of which could ironically only be solved by Frank Doyle.

"What sort of America do you come from?" Raven blinked. "I'm from the 1950s and I'd still need to prove I'm an adult before I buy alcohol back home."

"It's possible I've lived a very specifically sheltered life, and I'm glad for it," Frank said. "Side point: you're from the 1950s? I didn't realize that was possible. Time travel, that is, not the 1950s."

"Neither did I, until I got here. But considering that different students have completely different ideas of how history went, trying to work it all out just gives me a headache."

"So there are alternate universes here, too, and everyone wonders why I drink so much," Frank said. After a moment's consideration, he amended that statement."Sorry, how I drink so much. I suppose that is a different question."

"Well, most people I know would fall over if they had more than a few of the drinks you pour," Raven said. She'd been nursing her own drink. "Maybe you're a mutant yourself and just didn't know it. The mutant power to process hard liquor."

"I wouldn't rule out anything. Mostly because doing that would require too much research that I have no interest in taking on," Frank said.

"Fair enough," Raven decided. "Though I think you're going to get rather a lot more people wondering about your alcohol tolerance."

"Fortunately, I'll have had too much to drink to care," Frank said, raising his glass again and downing it. "It really is a cure all."

"I would be if I enjoyed parties," Frank said. "But they just have so many people."

"Just because I have a series of unspecified tragedies in my past - both recent and distant - don't enjoy the company of people outside a few notable exceptions and enjoy my share of liquor - which is a very generous share - doesn't mean I'm sad," Frank said encouragingly. "In fact, few things could make me happier than those drinks."

He certainly sounded happy talking about liquor.

In Raven's genre, that combination equaled deep brooding and probable vigilantism. "Well, if you're sure."

Raven was not sure.

In Frank's case it meant all the possible love he could have for a person being saved up, and also monster fighting. So almost the same thing, with more alcohol jokes. "I'm always as sure as possible whenever I say anything."

It was a basically meaningless sentence, but in fairness, he was many sheets to a quite strong wind by now. The fact that it was coherent and only meaningless upon analysis should be impressive.
