Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

//Most of Fandom's squabbles are anything but petty,// Jono said. He was at least aiming for 'reassuring,' here. That was something, right? //Though you're right. The lot from our own school days is for the most part long gone, though every now and again you'll see a familiar face. And the weirdness is the same.//

Of course it was. Fandom.

//I'll be happy to play 'familiar face' any time you need one, though. And we can stand around and moan about how when we were students, things were just better, regardless of whether they actually were or not.//

"And suddenly I understand stuff about Master Skywalker that I didn't before," Tahiri said wryly. "So, people are still turning into animals as usual? That's comforting."

No, really. It actually was.

[OOC: Aaaaaaaaaaack I never hit post I'M SORRY.]

//Isn't it, though? I apparently turn into the world's tiniest, most venomous bright-orange noodle, when the island has a mind to spring that sort of nonsense on me.//

Snake. He was a snake.

//Hell, the phones even mess up like clockwork almost every new semester.//

[OOC: No worries! WE CAN SP LIKE THE WIND IF IT COMES TO IT.]

Tahiri took a moment to put together that mental image, then shook her head and laughed. "Somehow that's not a look I pictured working for you, but it makes sense in a weird kind of way."

It also struck her as adorable, but she'd let him keep his dignity, thanks.

"But the phones, those are all but school tradition at this point, I think. A lot of it seems like that to me now, though." ~~Because we're ooooold.~~

Whatever dignity Jono had left, anyway?

//It really is, isn't it? A student even put together a phone that I can use, for me. Now I can join the ranks of those people who have been around the island long enough to know exactly what's going on, but who keep trying to return the calls regardless, mostly out of perverse amusement.//

"You don't actually do that, do you?" See, and now Tahiri was actually contemplating how amusing that would be. You terrible influence, Jono.

//I spent years getting bloody insane voicemail messages and being unable to retaliate,// Jono replied, not bothering to hide a little smirk that was lingering around the corners of his eyes. //I actually do it, and it's some of the best fun I get out of these random island whims.//

He was shameless. Utterly shameless. And if being a terrible influence helped her settle back in easily, he'd absolutely keep that up.

"Okay, that's a good point. You've got years of that to catch up on," Tahiri decided. "I have to wonder if any of the big siblings somehow 'forget' to mention that detail to the new kids just to add to the fun."

Not that she would suggest this to their faces.

//I'd say if they actually are warning them about a day of broken phone connections, it's a missed opportunity,// Jono mused. //Of course, when I was a student, I found that the talk of the weirdness usually tapered off around 'gremlins' and 'changing gender,' because how do you compete with the news that you might randomly wake up in a completely different body from time to time?//

"That's true. Adding any more on top of that seems like it might just be the -- what's that Earth expression, the last straw?"

Tahiri, for what it was worth, had a bizarre mental picture in her head of a bantha toppling over because of a bendy drinking straw.

"It's kind of nice to know there isn't a version of that for teachers, at least. I halfway thought there would be."

//The blunt conversation that might as well be hazing?// Jono shrugged his shoulders a little. //It's not terribly productive either way, especially when we're all nervous enough about the upcoming semester. I think teaching buddies are more... meant to make certain you're settling in. Anyway, you already know about all the weirdness. Makes more sense to talk about grown-up things like whether you've got a place to stay, or need help moving anything in, or offering you a hand if the students ever throw you for a loop, because they are Fandom students, after all.//

Tahiri wrinkled her nose. "Sure, make it harder for me to pretend we're not grown up," she said, but there was a glint of mischief in her eyes. "I mean, you're right, obviously. It wouldn't be productive, and now we actually have responsibilities."

She paused. "I'm just staying at the hotel, by the way, and you know we Jedi tend to travel fairly light so that's not a problem either. I'll probably be taking you up on that last part, though. I'm definitely not ruling it out."

//Well, then I'll be around to be taken up on that last part,// Jono shared. //And if you need me at all, I actually can answer my phone these days. Or you can see if I'm around at 22 Phoenix, or Groovy Tunes. Technically I live upstairs from the music shop, but, er, I'm rarely there.//

He sometimes stopped in to pick up more things to ever-so-casually move to Hannibal's place. That kind of counted, right?

Totally counted.

"It's not a very big island. I can track you down if I need to, and hopefully it won't be for that kind of emergency," Tahiri assured him.

". . . wow, that sounded creepier than I meant it to."

//Jedi thing?// Jono didn't seem terribly bothered by the idea. He just gave his shoulders a shrug. //It's fine, luv. I can find you if it comes to that, for that matter. Telepath thing. It'd be creepier if I didn't know you at all. Or if you steepled your fingers and gave a wicked laugh as you said it. That sort of thing.//

"Jedi thing, and also that it's not a very big island," Tahiri said with a half-grin. "And I don't think wicked laughs are really my style."

Never mind that she seemed to go evil in the future of everyone else's timeline.

Well, shame on everyone else's Tahiris. This one was clearly superior.

//Really, I think if you were to laugh wickedly, I'd probably just look at you, confused,// Jono decided. //So, there we go. We're both good at finding people, and neither of us are terribly likely to break out the cackling. That's a good sign, there.//

Granted, Jono wasn't going to be cackling mostly because you needed, like, lungs for that.

Details. At least it helped guarantee a continued cackle-free existence!

"Good thing for the students this semester, I guess," Tahiri said, nodding. "Anyway, I think Master Skywalker has the intimidating-Jedi market cornered."

//He really does. But only until you've been here long enough to realize that he's secretly part cupcake underneath that gruff and cloak-swooshing exterior.//

... Possibly a very small part, considering some of the things he'd done over the years. But it was definitely there.

Tahiri laughed. "A cupcake decorated with big, spiky pieces of candy stuck in the frosting, maybe, but yes."

A small cupcake. But still.

//The kind of candy that gets stuck in your teeth, at that,// Jono decided.

... Now he was really missing cupcakes.

Funny, Tahiri was just thinking they should maybe stop talking about food because it was kind of mean.

"Though that's one lesson the kids should probably learn on their own for the most part."

Really, it wasn't so bad. Jono had plenty of experience coping with this story of thing, these days. Look at who he spent most of his time with.

//True enough,// he decided. //About most of the teachers, actually. Even the frightening ones tend to genuinely care about the well-being of the students. They'll figure that out soon enough. Probably the first time something attacks the island.//
