Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of moddable food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yes! As she made her way through the crowd squinting at nametags, April had been hoping that Anders would be the guy with the brownies. Today was going great!

"Hi! Ooh, I was hoping it was going to be you. May I?"

"Because of the brownies, or because I'm fantastically handsome?" ANders teased with a smile. "And go on, help yourself. I figured telling you about the island would go better if there was chocolate."

"A little of this, a little of that," April teased back. "Thanks! You figured right. Every conversation is better than chocolate. Even the ones where someone's telling you there's a pack of dinosaurs that just invaded your camp. It goes down easier if there's brownies or cupcakes or desserts of some kind. Oh wow, these are good."

"I like you already," Anders decided. "Thanks. They're from a place called Jeff's."

What, like he baked?

"And this conversation is going to go a lot better if you're already used to things like dinosaur invasions."

So he wasn't handsome, friendly and a good baker? Well, two out of three was still okay.

"I am somewhat familiar with the experience," she declared primly. Now she was smiling in earnest, because she had a feeling that Anders was about to give her the best news ever. "Ooh, let me guess. This place is full of magical beings and people who are secretly gods and goddesses even though they look like normal teenagers, and sometimes there are monsters and we all have to rally together to fight them?"

What could she say? She had always liked being the star pupil. And she lived for a little adventure.

"...yesssss," Anders said slowly. "You stole my entire speech. I've got nothing more to say now."

A pause.

"There's a bar that doesn't card?"

Oops. "You can do the speech anyway if you want?" April suggested ruefully. "I can pretend to be surprised! Sorry, I didn't mean to steal your thunder. I just had a really weird summer."

"No, no, you didn't steal my thunder at all," Anders reassured her. "I was just surprised. And believe me, you're lucky to have already been somewhere else like this."

He tapped a finger against his lips. "What happened this summer? Or is that a long story?"

"Only about three months long," April teased. "My best friend and I went to this summer camp where we were supposed to be learning survival skills, and turns we totally did because there were a ton of invasions and all kinds of wacky hijinks we had to escape from. It was super fun."

Excited little bounce. "Did you have any experience with that stuff before you got here? Or was it just totally weird and scary?"

"Not exactly like this?" Anders said, smiling to be teased. (He was taking April's word for it on the 'super fun' part.) "But I'm from one of the worlds with magic, so the magic here wasn't a complete shock to me. I had a harder time with the technology and such, honestly. That we don't have at home."

Wow. Magic but no phones. It was hard for April to even imagine that kind of world, and some funny expressions flicked across her face as she tried to picture it.

"Maybe I should be glad I got to bring my phone to camp as long as it was switched to wi-fi and only for emergencies," she said. "I feel like not having a phone when there's a mystery to solve or some dark, twisty lair to escape from would be kinda scary. Is that what it was like for you?"

"We didn't know what phones were, so we didn't miss them," Anders told her. "Besides, I didn't spend that much time solving mysteries. But being lost and scared -- sometimes,sure."
