Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Nice nametag," Jasper said, nodding down at it. He'd been wandering by, looking idly for his little sibling when he'd spotted the name and the artistic creation. "Happy to be here or something?"

"Full of joy," Dante said, with a grin that might've edged a little bit towards 'psycho'. "Who're you?"

"Jasper," he answered, completely at home with smiles like that. It didn't even register. Probably because he'd seen smiles like that on his father. Hell, his own smile could look like that on occasion. "If you're Dante, I'm supposed to be your big sibling, make sure you know the ropes."

"My 'big sibling'?" Dante said, staring. "Wait, what? How do you people know my name, anyway?"

Baby steps.

"Well, I know it because I can see it on your nametag," he said, pointing at said nametag. "How it got there?"

Jasper shrugged.

"You're enrolled in this school now. I don't know how that happened. Magic, maybe."

"Oh, come on," Dante said. "Enrolled?"

Was this the next trick they were playing on him? And he'd walked right into it.

It was wrong to take pleasure in someone else's pain, wasn't it? Jasper did it anyway. He smiled crookedly.

"Those sound like the words of someone who didn't expect to be here?" Jasper knew he'd gotten lucky in that he'd at least known he was coming here.

"I crashed in the lounge," Dante said, shrugging. "Didn't think that immediately made me enrolled. Someone should put up a sign."

"This place doesn't really do things by the book," Jasper told him, shrugging. "That gonna be a problem? You're not easily frightened, I hope?"

Dante shot him a very pointed look. "No."

Amused, Jasper gave him the world's most fake grin. He thought he knew what Dante might be feeling right now and he sympathized.

"Then, you'll do fine here," he decided. "There's free food, the rooms are pretty comfortable and while you do have to go to class, it's not like someone's gonna make you learn geometry or something other boring crap."

"Right," Dante said. Yeah, he didn't look too sold. "And what's the catch?"

Jasper shrugged. "Sometimes strange stuff happens. Sometimes people are annoying. Other than that, not much. The island's small and you learn pretty quick."

Jasper knew he wasn't being that helpful but he wasn't about to bombard some kid with all the weird crap that he knew happened here. Even if he could handle it, he didn't want to overwhelm.

Somewhere, Dear Old Dad was just shaking his head at Jasper's attempts at being helpful. Being helpful was only warranted when you were trying to get yourself something.

The sad thing was that Fandom was basically a beach-side resort in comparison to what Dante was used to.

"Right," he said again, dubiously. "And you're my welcome wagon to the weird stuff, I guess."

"As much as I can be," Jasper said, shrugging. "I'm on the fifth floor and I'm usually around if something happens and you've got questions. If you make it through your first few weeks, I'm pretty sure you'll be fine."

Dante raised an eyebrow. "Okay, question number one: what's with the first few weeks?"

"I couldn't give you any specifics," Jasper admitted idly. "But, if you make it past the first few weeks without getting homesick or something, you'll do fine. Unexplained things are common. If the first thing doesn't freak you out, you'll be golden."

He hoped.

"You usually this vague, or do you just save it for the newbies?" Dante wondered. "Whatever."

Whatever happened, he'd live. Or not.

"I'm only being vague because I really don't know what this island's gonna do," Jasper told him pointedly. "If you wanna know some of the stuff I've gotten to experience..."

Fine, he'd tell you that, Dante. "Your future children might show. You might change genders for a weekend. It might rain ketchup or something similar. Some out of his mind person might show up and trap half the student body. That happens here."

Yeah, those all sounded unlikely except for the last one.

"Right," Dante said, "So you're not vague, you're just a comedian. Got it."

"Yeah, that's exactly what I am," Jasper said dryly, sarcastically. "You don't want to listen, no skin off my back. I did what I was supposed to do. But, you have fun living it yourself, man. I'll be around when you wanna come find me and apologize for your hurtful doubts."

"Awww," Dante said, "Did I step on your ego? Get a little bruised?"

... He hadn't been out to antagonize this guy, but it was really hard not to now.

It took a lot to antagonize him. He kept himself tightly restrained for so many reasons. Someone doubting him wouldn't change that.

"Cute," Jasper said, shaking his head. "I'm more amused than anything else. But, I'm more than willing to let you figure it out all on your own. Maybe it won't be so bad."
