Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of moddable food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"They're giving us a place to sleep," Dante expounded. "No strings, or what?"

Yeah, he didn't believe that for one second.

"Well, we have to go to a few classes, and every so often something tries to kill us all," Anders told him thoughtfully, in a tone that suggested those two things were roughly equal inconveniences. "Also, I hope you like cats, because my cat Lachlan's got seniority on you. But no strings besides that."

He tilted his head at Dante. "Not expecting to come here, I gather?"

You'd have to excuse Dante for getting stuck on the something tries to kill us all. "No, not really," he said distractedly. "Back up a little. You guys got a demon problem?"

"Not exactly," Anders said, shaking his head. "It's not as though you turn around and there's a rage demon trying to possess you before you get coffee in the morning. But we got a demon running a store once, and last month it was aliens, and a few other things besides that. We've come through all right so far, thank the Maker."

He paused, also seeming distracted. "Wait, you know about demons? Where are you from?"

"A nice little place called Limbo City," Dante said, "Demons run most of everything around there, keeping things nice and hot."

This was usually the point where the other party stared at him like he was insane.

Well, at least Anders wasn't staring? He was giving Dante more of a grim,concerned look.

"That sounds terrible," he said. "How did it happen? Did the demons possess the humans in charge?"

"No damn clue," Dante said. He shrugged. "They like to attack, too."

"The humans do?" Anders asked, rubbing his chin. "That's not very nice, if you're already dealing with demons."

"No, just the demons," he clarified. "The humans don't seem to see much."

Which was why it was so weird people here thought random things attacking was normal, or something.

"But you do," Anders said, furrowing his brow. "Are you some kind of mage, then? You see beyond the Veil?"

He was starting to get the strangest idea Dante might not be the safest possible roommate for someone who wanted nothing to do with demons.

Quite literally, in fact. Not that Dante knew anything about his ancestry.

"Uh, are you asking me if I'm a wizard?" Dante said. "'Cause I've known a few people who called me that, but they were naked at the time."

"Wizard sounds so story book-ish,though," Anders complained. "But yes."

A pause. "...also, if that was you hitting on me, I'm flattered but I'm taken. And sleeping with your roommate is a terrible idea anyhow."

It was a little hitting on him, but mostly because Dante kind of did that like it was breathing a lot of the time. "Nah, just saying," he said. "Not a mage, sorry, and I don't know what a Veil is, unless you mean looking into Limbo."

"The veil's the thing that splits our world off from the spirit realm," Anders said. "Different places have different names for it. Your Limbo might be my Fade."

"Is it full of fucking demons?" Dante asked. "'Cause in that case, yeah, probably."

"That would be it," Anders said, twisting his ponytail. "Fantastic."

Bad enough that he had to dream about demons without having a roommate with a similar issue.
