Sneaking 101, Thursday

There was no Atton this week. Just Ezra. Also the Danger Shop was programmed to look like a movie theater. So if your immediate guess was that this week's session would be easy, you were absolutely one hundred percent correct.

"Hey," Ezra said, waving lazily from where he was slouched in a seat near the back. "Atton's not here, so I'm in charge. And that means we're giving the actual sneaking a pass this week. It's just as important to see what other people are doing sometimes, you know?"

He didn't know, really. He was just being lazy.

"So without further hassle, sit down and enjoy our feature presentation of the day."

Well yes. Hardison was teaching her well?

"It'll draw attention to it, though. Especially if a whole year of scores need to get thrown out. If no one applying to college even has test scores that year than how can the colleges hold it against them?"

HARDISON WAS ALREADY ON NOTICE FOR TODAY'S STUNT WITH RADIO. (Also, Kathy was plenty scary!)

"They can just make the students retake them," Kathy huffed. "Or--or...okay, that's not a terrible point. But what about the students that have spent a ton of money and time preparing for the tests just to find out they don't count? I'd wring these kids' goddamn necks if that happened to me!"

"So is everyone just supposed to stick with the screwed up status quo because some folks have had to spend money to keep up with it?"

"No, but this isn't about them fucking with the status quo," Kathy said. "This is about people who aren't willing to put in the same effort as everyone else or deal with the consequences. If they were doing this to show just how messed up the SATs are, I'd be in the front row, clamoring for a sequel."

"Why can't people just do good things for the sake of doing good things?" Kathy asked. "Then we wouldn't have to spin anything! But these jerks shouldn't get credit for possibly calling the SATs into question when they're whole purpose is to just take the easy road while everyone else works hard."

Kathy had to fight down a smile at that. She was still grumpy, but it was nice to not be considered an asshole.

"The squirrels think you're scarier than I am, by the way," she told Raven. "I said that wasn't true, but they just laughed."

"That's because you look all nice and innocent on the outside," Raven said. "And because I can turn into an elephant and stomp on them." She brightened. "Oh! I meant to tell you! I flew this weekend!"

"You did? That's awesome! As a bird, or as yourself? How was it?" She put her chin in her hands and gestured for Raven to tell her all about it.

"A bird. It was amazing. And totally terrifying." Raven shrugged. "And . . . technically maybe only gliding? But still! I busted out of the ship by turning into a big bone armored elephant? But then, you know, I was in mid-air as a big armored elephant and not looking to die, so I turned into a falcon, had to dodge a tree, and landed in a bush."

It was what some would prefer to term "falling with style", to be honest.

Yeah, well, forget those people. Raven had flown and that was amazing and haters could go directly to the left.

"So it sounds like you can subconsciously change into things to keep you alive. That's good to know. What did it feel like? Do you remember? Can you maybe mimic some of that?"

Raven shrugged. "Maybe? I can definitely try. I was thinking I should ask Hardison if he can let me into the Danger Shop sometimes to practice. Then if I screw up, I'm way less likely to go 'splat'."

"I bet I could," Raven said. "He was trying to hit me up for gossip when we were in the sim. I could offer a trade. Of course, that might have been because I was teasing him about his love life. . . ."

Let's be real, Hardison would be up for anything that let him play with the Danger Shop more.

"Oh god, teasing him how?" Kathy asked. "That shouldn't even work, none of them have any shame."

"Because I'm not 'scary' enough to keep the squirrels away." Kathy wasn't pouting, it was a trick of the light. "I'm plenty scary. Damn near terrifying. Ask the dealer I took down last night! He'll say!"

"They once dragged Hardison's boyfriend in to do radio," Raven said. "So I'm thinking 'not scary enough to keep squirrels away' is a skewed measurement."
