Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It's as good a way as any to look like I belong here," Ada laughed, giving him a wink. "Maybe this way I won't stick out too much as the new girl."

She hopped up on to one of the picnic benches and executed a pirouette. "What do you think? Can I pass as a local?"

Jasper snickered despite himself. You didn't see too many people dancing around benches back in Lobo's Nod. No one seemed to have the inclination.

"You're the first person I've seen do that," he said, nodding towards her, "but, around here, I don't think that's a bad thing. I think you pass. I wouldn't look twice at you if we passed each other on the street."

"Well now, I'm not sure if that's a compliment or an insult," Ada said, putting her hands on her hips. "Telling a girl you wouldn't look at her twice, that's a fine way to introduce yourself!"

"But, if I'd said I would have looked twice, you might have said that was sleazy or smarmy or just unwanted," he pointed out. "Damned if I do, damned if I don't."

"At least you're clever enough to figure that bit out," she said, dropping back down to straddle the bench, "--and not dig yourself in deeper."

"H'lo. I'm Ada, by the way."

"Jasper," he returned, nodding at her. "And I'm very clever."

Well, he did sometimes lack modesty. Sometimes. He felt like it was safe to lack some modesty right now. Didn't give anything away.

"Gotta have something to fall back on since I'm glitter free, right?"

"Well we could fix that, if you wanted," Ada offered with a glint in her eye. "There seems to be plenty to go around."

"I don't think glitter really goes with my shirt."

His plain black tee shirt. Glitter would really clash with it.

"Besides, I'd be stealing it from people who really seem to like it. I'm more ambivalent on the glitter."

"Mmm. I can see where it would clash," she nodded sagely. "I think your personality is sparkling enough."

"So what brings you to the land of pink ponies and glitter, Jasper?"

"Oh, you know..." He waved a hand in the air. "Stuff and things."

How enlightening. Vague enough, though.

"What about you? Why are you here? No glitter where you're from? If you're from like 1820, I won't even be shocked."

Ada laughed. "Oh, we have glitter," she promised although canon never gives us an actual feckin' date. "I'm here because I was going to fail the stupid mandatory government testings this year, so I got packed off to pretend I care enough about school to get them off my back."

"Stupid mandatory government testings?"

Stop repeating everything. That wasn't even Dear Old Dad's voice. That was his own voice. He pursed his lips.

"We don't have those where I'm from. Sounds like the world's worst type of standardized testing, though."

"Home-schooled," Ada said with shrug. "So every year they make you take a test to show you memorized the stupid shit they think is important, and if you fail the social services people start fussing, and that's a whole batch of nonsense I don't want to deal with."

"Do they not test you on that stuff in townie schools?" she asked. "Or wherever you're from? That doesn't seem fair."

"I wasn't home schooled so maybe?" He shrugged. "We've got tests and crap but I never thought of them as government issued."

Though, after some thought, he supposed that those tests were actually government issued since schools were under local government jurisdiction. He shook his head, wondering why he was thinking so deeply about that?

"I dunno, I just don't see why governments wanna know if I can spell satellite right."
