Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So, are you new too?" Cosima asked the blond girl,for no reason beyond that she was right there. "Or do you actually know what's going on here?"

"It's safe to say I have absolutely no idea what's going on here." And that was an understatement. "I'm not entirely convinced I'm not dreaming."

"I didn't sleep nearly well enough on the plane to be dreaming," Cosima noted. "But hey, I can't prove I'm not in your dream. Guess we'll know if things get really trippy."

She hadn't noticed the pink pony quite yet.

"Fair enough," Clarke said with a hint of a smile. "I'm Clarke."

"Cosima," Cosima returned, with a smile of her own and a little wave. "Which year are you? I'm going to be a junior."

"I-uh..." She looked down at her name tag like that would have the answer. "I don't really know to be honest. I didn't intend to come here."

"There seems to be a lot of that going around," Cosima said sympathetically. "I don't get it. People don't just go places they don't mean to go."

"It's easier to do than you'd think," she said. "I was just walking through the woods a hundred years into the future, apparently."

"Really?" Cosima asked, looking the girl over. She didn't look particularly old-timely, but it wasn't like Cosima was an expert. "It's 1915 where you are?"

"The opposite," she said with a wave of her hands. "I was in the future first and then came here."

"Ohhh," Cosima said, like that made total sense. (It didn't.) "What's going on in 2115?"

She was willing to accept the crazy on their own terms. You learned more that way.

"Nuclear war made the planet inhabitable for awhile," she said bluntly. "And the last remains of Earth are about to die on a space station whose life support systems are running down."

Such a cheery future.

"Okay, that's not exactly what I was expecting," Cosima admitted. "I thought maybe we'd talk about flying cars and meals that came in pills. I'm sorry, though. That's awful."

She still didn't entirely believe in time travel,but she was willing t accept it for the sake of the conversation.

Clarke shrugged. "It's what I'm used to. But if it makes you feel any better you'll be dead before it happens?"

"Hey, I might live to 115," Cosima argued lightly. "There's all kinds of research on human lifespans going on. Maybe I'll get lucky and just be really really old when it happens."

"How is that lucky?" Clarke asked.

"Mostly I was being sarcastic," Cosima said. "But, y'know. Nice long life that ends when everybody in my nursing home gets radiation poisoning. I'm sure there are worse things."

Not that she could think of many.

"Did you end up coming here on purpose?" Clarke asked.

Cosima nodded. "Yeah, I wasn't all that happy in my old school, so I went looking online for a new one, and ... here I am."

It seemed so undramatic.

"And what lead you to this place?" Just so she knew what she was getting herself into. "Good reputation?"

Cosima looked sheepish.

"... I liked that there was a picture of a castle on their website. And that they offer a lot of independent study. But, y'know,the reputation seemed pretty good? No negative feedback online or anything?"
