Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kira hadn't wasted much time before getting a plate of food, although she'd tried to stick to some healthier things to balance out the chocolate taking up about half of her plate. Sugar would keep her excited for the whole afternoon!

Ringo had a similarly-loaded plate, and when she noticed Kira's, she laughed and offered a friendly smile. "It looks like you and I think alike," she said, hoping that the smile and attempt at humor would be a good way to introduce herself.

Because meeting new people was just a bit stressful.

New people were super stressful, which was why Kira appreciated having the chance to meet lots of new folks on one day. "Balance is important," she said with a sage nod before laughing. "Are you one of the new people?"

"Is it obvious?" Ringo asked, blushing slightly looking down at herself wondering what might have given her away.

She was still wearing a nametag from meeting up with her roommate, but so were any other number of random people around the picnic.

Well, okay, so most of them had taken theirs off by now, but still!

"This place isn't that big," Kira explained. "Even if I don't know everyone's name, I know which people have been here for a while, and which people haven't. I was hoping you weren't someone I've just missed for the last few months. I'm Kira, by the way, it's nice to meet you."

Ringo smiled. "I'm Ringo Nonayamo," she responded, bowing at the waist. "It's nice to meet you, too."

She straightened up and nodded. "And I suppose that makes sense. I look out and see nothing but new people, but I guess most of them are only new to me."

"Did you have a good time getting here?" Kira asked. "I know the shuttle is kind of... questionably safe."

"I ended up getting in too late for it, so I had to take a cab." Ringo smiled. "Did I totally luck out with that?" She hadn't heard anything about the shuttle, other than that it had been an option if she'd made it in earlier.

Kira's eyes got wide and she nodded emphatically. "You did, you totally did. They don't exactly send teachers with the best driving records? I mean, there's not a lot of space to practice around here since we can't drive, but still. You were probably a lot safer with the cab. And hey, you knew where you were going, so that's a plus too."

Ringo's shoulders probably would have slumped a bit in relief if she'd actually realized she should have been stressed about the shuttle thing, but since she hadn't, she just shook her head ruefully. "Guess I lucked out."

After a moment more, she let out a soft snort of amusement. "In more ways than one," she added, "since I heard that some people just end up here without planning on it." Which was very, very weird, by the way.

"Did that happen to you?" Ringo said, looking suddenly worried as she realized that might have sounded dismissive.

Kathy wandered over and plunked a brownie on top of Kira's plate. "You didn't have enough chocolate," she declared with a grin.

"Hey!" Kira said, laughing. "I mean, aww, thank you for looking out for me." She gave Kathy a gentle nudge with her arm. "Are you having fun?"

Kathy held up here own plate, where she had two brownies on it. Among other things. No judgment here, Kira. "What, at the picnic?" she asked, nudging her back. "Yeah. It's always fun to get to meet new people. And hang out with friends. And point out new cute guys to old friends."

"Cute guys? Where?" Kira said, looking around. "New ones that don't know we're big dorks yet?"

Everywhere, Kira. They were everywhere.

"Face is wandering around shirtless because the squirrels told him to." Which meant the squirrels were clearly kind and benevolent creatures. "And, who knows? Maybe we got cool over the past semester and just haven't realized it yet?"

Unlikely.

"Okay, I'll forgive the squirrels for at least the next day," Kira said, laughing. "I can at least pretend I'm cool, especially for new boys. It looks like the latest group are just as pretty as the last one."

"Which remains both very appreciated and incredibly unfair," Kathy laughed. "How long do you think you can keep the pretense up? I mean, I don't have class on Mondays, so I might manage to last until Tuesday before I revert to being a hopeless nerd."

"I've got a class on Monday, but it's Dr. Lecter's class on International Cuisine. So, that's exciting and not nerdy, right?" Feel free to lie, Kathy, Kira needed a little hope.

"Super exciting," Kathy assured her. "You'll have that whole 'well-traveled woman of mystery' air about you. Way cooler than my first class where we're literally just going to be playing outside."
