Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Still enough to warp an innocent guy like me," Hardison declared. "You know I look to my elders for moral guidance."

"You hacked the Pentagon when you were twelve. I was still a fine, upstandin' soldier, back then."

Well, not really 'upstanding'. He'd already been doing special ops wetwork for a few years by then.

"An' if you were a hacker, you'd be findin' that unbearably sexy right about now," Hardison said with a grin. "Be nice to me an' maybe I'll bring you along to the Oscars. I don't even gotta hack to put myself on the guest list no more."

"What do I care about the Oscars?" Eliot's grin went a little evil. "Get me into the CMAs, then I might be impressed."

"How many times do I gotta tell you Eliot," Hardison said, even as he made plans to do just that. Though Eliot would owe him SO MUCH for that evening out, ye gods. "I can't hack a hick."

"Dunno 'bout that, Hardison," Eliot said, letting his accent get ridiculously thick. "I dun heard these days they're usin' all sortsa fancy technologies, even in the country."

"Well, that thar elek-trici-tee sure is newfangled," Hardison retorted because their way of flirting was the absolute best. "I hear y'all gonna get indoor plumbin' any minute now, too! Won't Ma an' Pa be pleased as punch 'bout that?"

"Oh my god," Eliot groaned. "And I thought your British accents were bad."

"Like to hear you do an accent," Hardison grumbled. "I mean, one you ain't grown up with."

"What, you mean like this?" Eliot asked, southern accent completely drowned out in the bog standard "American" accent.

"Man, everyone can do that one."

Eliot ~~pouted~~ scowled. It taken him years in the service to perfect dropping his accent completely. "I can speak Arabic, Hardison, I don't need to do accents."

"An' I speak Perl, BASIC, C++, COBOL, FORTRAN, Ada, Python, and Pascal," Hardison said, trying not to grin at that pout. "You don't hear me bragging about it."

EXCEPT FOR HOW HE ABSOLUTELY DID.

"No, you write those." COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LANGUAGE CENTER, HARDISON. "You speak English. Barely. I'm conversant in six different Middle Eastern and South East Asian languages and can get by in most Eastern European ones."

By 'get by', of course, he meant that he knew basic pleasantries, numbers, how to order some one to drop their weapons, and how to hit on people.

"What you mean, 'barely'?" Hardison demanded. "An' telling a girl that you wanna meet her in a bathroom in ten minutes don't count as getting by."

"Maybe it wouldn't for you," Eliot said.

Hardison was just going to roll his eyes, okay? Roll them really hard.

"Only cause if I wanna tell a girl to meet me in the bathroom, I can just do tell Parker in English."

"Yes, Hardison, we're all very proud of your progress."

"Dammit, Eliot! I keep tellin' you, man, I was not a virgin when we met!"

SAY IT A LITTLE LOUDER, HARDISON. NOT ALL THE STUDENTS HAD HEARD YOU.

"No, you just had no idea how to ask a woman out."

"I didn't wanna rush her!"

Also that.

"Or a man, for that matter," Eliot continued as though Hardison hadn't even spoken.

"...You don't know that."

Except for how he very much did. Because it was obvious.

Eliot just looked at him.

Really, Hardison should have way more practice resisting judgmental silence, by now.

He was getting a lot of it today, it was true.

"Well how many dudes have you asked out?" he asked. "Invitin' 'em back to their own place for a threesome don't count, either!"

Again, Hardison, maybe with the volume control?
