Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

Lottie had just been starting to believe that she was wrong, and she actually had managed to go to some kind of American summer camp instead of a French exchange trip.

Then she'd caught sight of Fandom through the shuttle window.

This was the most French place she'd seen in ages.

So here she was, carefully sticking her "Charlotte" sticker to her jacket and muttering "je suis ananas" to herself for practice.

Kathy was waiting to meet her new little sister with a big smile, her name written in huge letters on her nametag to help Charlotte find her. She was also bouncing a little in place. New students! So exciting!

And--did that say--It did!

"Hi!" Kathy said, very carefully approaching Charlotte at a normal human pace, instead of flitting over as fast as she could. "Charlotte Grote, right? Welcome to Fandom! I'm Kathy, your school-appointed big sibling. Pleased to meet you!"

Lottie had not been prepared to share a room on this trip. Well, no, she was prepared to sleep on a cot tucked into the corner of some French girl's room and wish it was Mimi's. This seemed much more official than that. Also, far less supervised.

She wondered who this "Dipper" was. She hoped she was fun. And had an appreciation for purple Ratman pajamas.

"I get a new big sister? French schools are well strange!" Said the girl who'd been practicing how to say "I am a pineapple." "I warn you, I have loads of experience bein a little sister. I'm right good at it."

Mostly the being obnoxious part. Also, the crushing after her big sister's boyfriend part. And then accidentally revealing her big sister's boyfriend's secret crime fighting lair part, though she thought perhaps those last two were probably pretty Grote girl specific.

Considering the teachers Hardison knew best on the island were two thieves and a talking pony, he wasn't going too worried about warping anyone's mind. Besides, he had plenty of other things to worry about instead, including oh god oh god he was a teacher who let this happen? Who thought he should be responsible?

He hadn't even gone to college! ...Outside of a con.

But, you know, he was taking it easy, being chill, ready to socialize and impress and show everyone he was as cool as Eliot and Parker. Because he was. Really. He meant that.

Oh god.

Eliot was a bit on edge, today. Apparently, the school had decided he was a good choice to help welcome the new teachers. He'd even been assigned one.

Named "Agent".

Now, perhaps he was biased, but in Eliot's experience, having a name like "Agent Washington" didn't bode well. Especially not when mixed with a bunch of teenagers. But, then, this was the school that had hired the likes of Pinkie Pie. And Parker. And him.

Sometimes he wondered about their hiring policies.

...She'd be surprised actually. Not that Kathy had a boyfriend or anything, but several of the guys she'd crushed on in the past had secret lairs. And several of them fought crime.

As did she.

"French schools?" Kathy asked, confused. "And no worries. I've got loads of experience being a big sister. My sister Sarah is probably about your age, too."

You'd have to bring your A game to out-obnoxious Sarah, Lottie. Or Fandom island, really.

"Stop panicking, man."

Said the guy who kept scanning the crowd like he expected something to go wrong at any moment.

Ignore that startled jump, Eliot. He was doing calisthenics. A proper workout regimen was very important to Hardison.

"Wh-what?" he stammered. "I ain't--you don't--wh-why would you--Who says I'm nervous?"

Lottie's game was pretty A. She listened to black metal and liked to skulk around in a cloak when she was depressed, after all.

She was a bit busy gaping to point that out just now, though. "My sister's name is Sarah, too! But she's a big older than you. And rounder. And she's got the funky college hair now."

Parker was keeping half an eye out for Cosima Niehaus, and half an eye out for any new teachers who looked like they were going to be problems. Or new and crazy friends!

Also there was a ton of food to eat.

Pat, pat. Pat pat! Parker was attempting to be comforting.

"Have some more cake. It's not like they're going to eat you." She paused. "Probably."

Raven was beginning to get pretty good at this whole big sister thing, she felt, so it was with some confidence that she stuck her name tag to her mimicked dress and scanned the new kids for someone who looked like a Jasper.

She was pondering what shape to use when it came time to prove Fandom's weirdness. She should go dramatic, this time. Maybe the five-headed dragon. That one was always fun, if a little bit dizzying.

Eliot smirked. "It's a very distinctive body language," he said. "You're good at talkin' to people. What's the problem?"

Pfffffft. Kathy would see your black metal and raise you 80s gangsta rap and modern-day Korean boybands. The cloak, she didn't actually have, but she patrolled Baltimore in a rainbow-trimmed gi. Bring it.

"My sister's rounder than me, too," Kathy admitted ruefully. "At least in certain places. And our parents would probably murder us if we got funky college haircuts, even once we were in college. She's back home in LA right now. Where's home for you?"

She'd noticed the accent, yes. She probably should have gone with 'Los Angeles' instead of 'LA' what with Lottie not being from the States, but come on. Who hadn't heard of LA in this day and age?

Lottie had totally heard of LA! It was possible she thought it was a fictional version of Hollywood, though. Getting your geography from movies was unreliable at best. "Tackleford. That's across the Channel in Britania. Well north of Londonton."

Some of those were even real place names.

"Mum pretends she'd murder us sometimes, but that's just for fun. Her boyfriend tried to impose a curfew on me once, though. It was terrible."

"I--I gotta be me, but, like, cooler," he explained, fingers indenting his Solo cup. "You know, reach the kids, make 'em respect me, all that. An' you can't fake cool. Even when you think you are, you find out later that everybody was laughin' at you the whole time."

Not that he was referencing anything specific. Really. That would be just silly.

Atton had driven the bus. As far as he was concerned, he had done his teacherly duty for the day, and he was kind of eager to get back home. Uh, to the Temple.

Look, shut up.

But he'd be here for another hour or so, all official in a dark brown Jedi tunic with nothing fancy.

At least it wasn't poking?

"Woman, why you gonna go an' raise the ugly spectre of cannibalism to me right now?" he asked, though he was smiling a little. "There's people from all over the damn multiverse. Odds are good that at least one person here thinks eatin' people is a hobby or somethin'."

". . . You're worried a bunch of teenagers are going to laugh at you?" Maybe it was an age thing; that hadn't even cropped up on Eliot's radar. "Pretty sure that's gonna be a given no matter what you do, man. They're teenagers."

Britannia? Londontown? Kathy was pretty sure that at least one of those names had gone out of style with the dissolution of the Roman Empire.

"Don't you mean across the pond?" Kathy asked. "I thought the Channel was the bit of water between Britain and France."

She knew it was. But saying so so baldly just seemed almost rude.
