Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The last picnic for new arrivals had involved a bonfire, but there was no need for artificial warmth today. The weather outside was sunny, and just breezy enough that no one would roast, hopefully. There were tables and chairs arranged around the lawn, along with a long table of food, drinks, and desserts for anyone who stopped by.

There were stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Man, do you know how long it was before we were convinced you didn't move to the island just to get away from us?" Hardison asked. "An', you know, not once in five years did I see you go after any of dudes. I slow-played it with Parker for years. What're you expectin' from me?"

"Sure you did," Eliot said. "I had that whole thing with Quinn." Had Hardison not noticed him and Quinn after the job with the dam? Huh. "I moved out here 'cause I like space, man. And I didn't like feelin' like I was invading on yours and Parker's."

"You had a thing with Quinn?! I thought you, like, hated that dude!"

YEP. MISSED IT ENTIRELY.

"We knew you liked space. We just figured we were invadin' yours."

"What? He's a decent hitter." Decent enough to have nearly taken Eliot down, even. "He's pretty cool when he hasn't been hired to kill you." Eliot rolled his eyes. "I mean I like physical space, Hardison. The preserve, the beachy bits. A house that ain't surrounded by yuppie hipsters. Boston and Portland were great and all, but I missed the small town vibe."

"Ohhhhh." It had been seven years and Hardison was only now understanding. "Man, all that wasted time over a misunderstandin'."

He added tentatively, "So you not wantin' to move into the apartment. Is that also cause it just ain't, like big enough kinda thing? Not enough physical space? Or...?"

"It's a nice house, Hardison. I put a lot of work into it. It's got a yard for Val and space for a garden and believe it or not, I like walkin' to work." Which were all good reasons and maybe just a little bit of cover for the fact that the idea of moving in with someone was terrifying.

Hardison nodded slowly at that, expression carefully neutral. "A'ight," he said, with more gravity than would necessarily be warranted by Eliot's simple, verbal answer. "Space."

Eliot, Hardison was a Care Bear. C'mon now.

Eliot sighed. Being involved with an emotionally perceptive person was irritating. "So I didn't exactly see you fallin' over any guys over the years, either, man."

"Funny that," Hardison said. "Since you're supposed to be all observant an' stuff. You watched me fallin' hard over Parker an' didn't see me fallin' for you at the same time?"

Hey now, Eliot was totally observant! Just, you know, about physical threats. Not quite so much romance.

"You didn't follow me around like a love-lorn puppy."

"Naw," he said, grinning. "I just bought you a brewpub instead.""

"No, you bought a -- oh."

Yeah, Eliot totally hadn't worked out that was for him before.

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

Don't let that smile ~~despite the default icon~~ fool you, Hardison. Eliot definitely didn't think that was really sweet.

Suuuuure he didn't.

Hardison burst into laughter, the kind that had him holding his stomach and leaning over. "You really never figured it out, man?" he asked. "We figured that was why you spooked an' ran! S'why we waited so long for Parker to come an' visit. Before I moved out here! Like I said, we thought you needed space."

Eliot's expression couldn't quite decide on scowling or smiling. "You don't just buy someone a restaurant, man!" He was dead set on ranting, though. "You especially don't do it without tellin' them. We coulda had this whole thing worked out more than a year ago!"

"I'll keep that in mind," Hardison said, unable to get rid of the grin. "Is this the point where I tell you that you own Luke's, too? Free an' clear an' all legal an' aboveboard? I mean, it ain't in your name, cause I wasn't sure if you'd want to own somethin' openly, but it's yours, man."

Beat.

"Why the hell did you think I'd want a brewpub?" he asked. "You think I'd signed up for a year full of you bitchin' about the menu just for kicks?"

He was going to have to tell Parker all about this.

". . . Yeah." It was generally how they communicated with each other, after all. "Why the hell did you buy out Nate's building? You buy expensive crap you don't know how to run to mess with us."

Dammit, did this mean Sophie'd figured it out and didn't tell him, too? It had to. This was exactly the sort of thing she noticed.

Okay, fair point.

Also, like Eliot was the only person to confide in Sophie. please.

"I bought Nate's building so I could put in the needed upgrades to tech an' security without anyone bitchin' about it. Especially Nate." Because...Nate. "I bought the brewpub cause I thought you'd like it. Same reason I put bigger 'n average vents in there an' raised the ceilings."

"Yeah, that part I figured out." Everyone had figured out that part. "But you decided the offices were going to be in Nate's apartment to mess with him."

That was why Eliot had used a chainsaw to cut a new door in the wall. Messing with Nate was fun.

"It was just more convenient that way," Hardison said, looking as innocent as he could. "I did it for the team. Just doin' somethin' to mess with Nate would be wrong."

Eliot smirked. "And we all know how much you hate doing anything wrong."

"I would never. My Nana raised me right."

Which was why he never made unauthorized backups or watched sex tapes or anything else. Really.

"So still think I ain't pursued no guys over the years?"

"Oh no, you've made it very clear that you've just done it incompetently."

"Pretty sure you're the only one who didn't figure it out," Hardison said, his smirk not fading in the slightest. "So maybe I ain't the incompetent one."

"When it takes a guy six years to figure out you're even interested, Hardison, y'ain't doin' something right."

Admittedly this could easily be turned back around on Eliot. But he hadn't actually been pursuing Hardison until about a week before he said "let's have a threesome", so.

Hardison was notorious for slow-playing things! Notorious!

"If you say so, man," Hardison said. He was still grinning. "Why? How long were you interested in me for?"
