If you thought a little thing like weeks of unrelenting trauma was going to stop your final exam, you didn't know Anakin very well. He at least look vaguely sorry about it between texts on his comlink (that was only half to avoid talking to Obi-Wan).

Smooth, Anakin. Very smooth.

It was Obi-Wan who cleared his throat and began speaking after the exams had been distributed. "It is traditional for this class to end in a written exam," he said. "No choice listed on these sheets is wrong--" though he and Anakin might disagree about which ones were least wrong, ahem, "--as we are primarily interested in your reasoning. Please be thorough."

"And legible," Anakin added. He coughed. "And if anyone feels the need to talk about this weekend, or last, for that matter, we're around after class."

"If there's anything I can help with?" Anakin said.

Obi-Wan now knew exactly what he was getting at.

"I'm fine," he said, pointedly.

Which had absolutely nothing to do with Anakin's earlier point re: the calls he occasionally had to make while under attack.

"Poodoo," Anakin countered quietly.

"I grieved her, but I let go of it," Obi-Wan said.

By some measure of 'it' that didn't cover large amounts of guilt. "So really, your concern is appreciated, but I'm fine."

He'd say it five times if he had to.

"Mmmm," Anakin said. "I know you better than that, old friend."

Anakin always had been irritatingly stubborn.

Obi-Wan silently appealed to the ceiling to get him out of this cross-examination, but it didn't budge. "I thought we were talking about your granddaughter."

"And after I have coffee with her, I'll tell you all about what she wanted," Anakin promised. "But you are marinating in guilt almost as badly as you did when you first arrived, and that's not fine."

Obi-Wan shot him a dark look from the corner of his eyes. "There's hardly anything to be done for that," he said. "Her death is my fault."

"Because cutting Maul in half and letting him fall down an endless shaft hadn't been enough to kill him?" Anakin guessed, frowning.

"Because he killed her to get to me," Obi-Wan corrected him.

Well, there was also the other thing. But he was a star in the field of juggling multiple strains of guilt at once.

"So do you feel guilty because it worked or because it didn't?" Anakin asked.

"I feel guilty because she died because Darth Maul came after me, and she was caught in the crossfire," Obi-Wan retorted pointedly. "How I felt hardly comes into it."

And was complicated.

"How'd he even know to go after her?" Anakin asked, kind of missing the pointed point.

"Satine attempted to escape when Death Watch took over Mandalore," Obi-Wan said, because apparently Anakin was just not going to let well enough alone today. "She... sent me a distress call."

Him personally. Because Mandalore was neutral, and so the Jedi couldn't officially intervene.

Anakin sighed heavily. "And Maul intercepted it?"

"I imagine so," Obi-Wan said grimly. "That would've been shortly before I asked you to borrow the Twilight, I believe."

And then had it explode mid-rescue attempt. Oops.

"That's the one that exploded, right?" Anakin checked.

There had been a lot of explosions....

"...It may have taken a few missiles and then exploded, yes."

"If I had a credit for every time that happened--" Anakin teased.

"You may be able to buy a cup of caf," Obi-Wan said dryly.

"Or a small moon," Anakin said.

"Now you're exaggerating," Obi-Wan said firmly. "Half a moon, at best."

"I'm not saying it's a habitable moon in a good school district," Anakin said with a small smirk, "but I could get a moon."

"Then what's the point of getting one, I wonder, if it can't even offer a decent education?"

Blast. Now he was smiling. A little.

"Bed and breakfast where you can get away from it all?" Anakin offered, smiling back.
