The Library - Tuesday

With all the freaky shit going on with the island today, Barry decided it would be a good idea to make sure the library was open today for any researchers to do some researching.

He was even nice enough to have coffee brought in from the perk. Normal coffee. Nothing that may have been brewed with acorns or anything.

For his part Barry was behind the main desk doing his own research by remotely accessing his lab via his tablet but would be available for anyone if they had questions.

"Okay, SO." Kenzi staggered in, looking like the fourth day of a three-day bender, and people who'd been in Vegas with her would recognize that. "Hey Bo. Hey people. Leland Gaunt is evil, he sold me a cursed ring, it exploded, I feel lots better but still feel like shit, and... yeah. Lying down now." On top of one of the tables.

"Wait, what?" Jack was there with the important questions. "What happened? Leland Gaunt -- is he the one from the new store?"

"Yep. Charming guy. Well. Not so much, I guess." Kenzi sighed and curled up into a ball, her head pounding. "He sold me a ring that could make me invisible, and inaudible. Told me not to tell anyone where I got it." She swallowed, opening one eye. "I kinda had to give him something really valuable to get it. And, well...."

Yeah, she'd kinda taken someone else's valuable thing to do so.

Eleanor suddenly had an odd feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"Wait," she said. "He said ... not to tell anyone? He wanted you to lie about it?"

Her very strange maybe-ex-boyfriend had a new necklace. And, at the same time, a helpful new treatment plan.

Oh, Joker .....

"Yup," Kenzi sighed. "Special item and all that. I should've known better, gah." She rolled over to look at Eleanor. "I took it off, decided I need a break, you know? It wasn't even that much fun any more. And I felt better. So I got pissed and broke it. And then..." She gave a nervous little giggle. "Anyway! Did you guys see the fuck-ton of dark clouds outside? How about that crazy weather?"

Normally if a student showed up looking like they were coming off a month-long bender of some sort, John ignored 'em. If he was feeling nice, he might lob the aspirin in their direction, or throw them out so they didn't puke on the books, but mostly he ignored whatever the kids got up to.

This time, however, he was out of his office like a shot. Well, not as fast as he normally would, but still rather quickly. "Did you say Gaunt?" he demanded, leveling a finger at Kenzi. "He's been cutting deals with you kids? Bloody fucking hell!"

Look, JOHN was a fucking adult capable of making his own fucking bad decisions, thank you kindly, and KNOWING they were fucking bad decisions. It was what he did. But he'd had no idea Gaunt was dealing to the kids.

"Fucking shite-stain of an ill-begotten... look, girl, focus two seconds and I'll get you a coffee and some nice pills that probably will put you under that table the rest of the way. You broke it, it exploded, and then the weather rolled in? You sure?"

"Yes," Kenzi said, very certain. "It was all sunny, I was on the back porch, playing with Zenkie. Broke the ring. Everything got darker. Fought a ... something that came outta the ring." She was nodding along as she recounted all this. "And then, soon as I burned the leftover thingie, I started to book it over here. Which. Wow. Took a lot longer than usual? I should've called," she realized. "But I wasn't thinking too straight."

Bo would let other people ask the questions about who-how-why-what-the-hell, but only to a point. The possibly-about-to-pass-out point.

Class, delicacy, and school-appropriate language, thy name is Ysabeau. "You look like shit. Are you gonna be okay?"

"I dunno," Kenzi said, for once not exaggerating. "I just feel so funky." She stared at the ceiling, then at her hand. "I'm not disappearing, right? I kinda wanna pass out. Or .. no, mostly pass out."

"You are not disappearing," Bo agreed, "and you're not passing out, either. At least not before I get you someplace with a bed and meds and somebody better qualified to pronounce you okay than Doctor Bo, G.E.D."

For certain values of GED that didn't include her real name on the paperwork or actually having taken the test.

"You're not taking me to the vampire chick, are you? 'Cause I'm really not sure about that one." Kenzi tried to get up, and managed to at least work her way up to sitting. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

"...Yeah, no." Bo shook her head and offered an arm. Or a shoulder. Or hell, if need be she could just carry Kenzi there. It wouldn't be the first time. "That one... let's just say she's damn good for what ails me, but with her clothes on I'm not sure I'd even trust her to put on band-aids and hand out lollipops."

Kenzi giggled, then managed to scoot off the table. She thought she could walk. If she got breaks. And they took a rickshaw. She leaned heavily on Bo's shoulder.

"...sorry I've been crazy."

"Yeah, well, sorry I've been a gray-skinned nightmare with claws, a soul-sucking belly dancer, a stewardess in nicotine withdrawal, some weird Australian mole-rat and a kid from Indiana." She'd probably missed a few, even. "You were about due for a turn."

"Heh. True." Kenzi felt a little bit better there as she slumped against Bo. Best comforting person ever. "I forgot about the mole-rat. That was hilarious... think I owe Roland free beer for a year for stealing from him, though."

"Sounds like everybody's getting eobbed." Bo frowned. "Magic harp makes sense, magic jewel makes sense, but all rumors to the contrary, my underwear? Not magic. Or much with the resale value if you're not in Japan. Why would he send somebody to steal those?"

Bob stood over Kenzi, frowning down at her. "What sort of cursed ring?"

"It was pretty. Some kind of lacy stuff. I put it on, poof, no see, no hear me." Kenzi made a face up at him. "Then Baba Yaga showed up after I smashed it. Man that was not what I paid for."

"Baba Yaga?" Bob blinked. "I don't see her taking on the form of an old man keeping shop. Cursed items for sale isn't exactly her thing, either. Are you sure?"

"Well, no," Kenzi admitted. "'Cause she didn't really give me a chance to ask her questions, and she kept bleeding black goo all over when I punched at her and Zenkie clawed her. And then she kinda dissolved."

"That sounds more like some sort of apparition." Bob frowned in thought. "Designed to keep you from destroying it? Or maybe it actually was the ring..."

He was pretty much just thinking out loud now.

"She kept calling me naughty. And ungrateful. For smashing the ring." Kenzi yawned, grumbling. "There was just a little doll leftover, when it was done.... and now I gotta tell Roland I can't get his harp back."

Man, that was gonna suck.

"His harp?"

What did a harp have to do with anything? Or a doll?

"I mighta... maybe... sorta. Tradedhismagicharpforthering." Kenzi rolled over, hands over her face. "I don't think Gaunt does take-backs or refunds."

Bob took a moment to make words out of that. "Did he say why he wanted the harp? Do you know what it does?"
