Baking: Sweet and Savory | Monday, 3rd period

Hannibal began class today with everyone at the central island, and nodded at them. "Before we begin, I should perhaps apologize; as you have been informed, I was a reptile last week, and unable to teach."

He paused for a moment. The things he'd never thought he'd hear himself saying!

"I would like to thank Sparkle for his initiative," he nodded to him, "and for his inventiveness in ways of not burning things. However he may have done it." Because microwaves? Honestly, Sparkle? Hannibal was looking slightly pained.

"So, to follow, I thought we would learn to cook brownies in an actual oven." He presented a recipe and its variants on the wall. "As with the mochi, this is a simple recipe that can be altered any number of ways depending upon your preferences. The key to the base is to use quality chocolate and cocoa. Beyond that, there are no new techniques in this recipe, merely application and experimentation." He smiled. "And of course, eating. Enjoy."

Brownies in the oven this week! Get creative with the variations!

Kathy was not at the top of her game today, not even remotely. All she could think about was when the store would be open and if Mr. Gaunt had set a price for that mirror yet. She'd had dreams about the mirror, it was always on the verge of showing her something important, maybe even life-changing if she could only just see it, everything would be different.

Were those dreams true? Was the magic in the mirror trying to tell her something?

She was having trouble thinking of anything else. Her normally neat appearance was disheveled, she had a bruise forming over one cheek from where a moment of distraction had let someone get a lucky punch in Baltimore, and as for her brownies...

Well, if she managed to make anything edible today, it would be a miracle.

"Is there a problem, Ms Li?" Hannibal asked. It was hard to miss the difference in her today.

Kathy had been staring off into the distance, a broken egg in her hands with the whites oozing out of the shell, unnoticed. If she'd been content with jumping when Dr. Lecter had startled her, it was possible the egg could have been salvaged. Unfortunately, almost a year of crime-fighting had changed her reflexes a bit. Instead of just starting in place, Kathy's arm lashed out in a defensive snap, half an egg hurtling through the air directly at the 'threat'.

Fortunately, Hannibal had rather good reflexes of his own, though they weren't quite up to superhero standards.

Unfortunately, that meant he could only partially dodge the egg, and it ended up splatting on the shoulder of his jacket.

His custom-tailored silk jacket.

He was looking at you, Kathy. Just looking.

"Oh, shit." Kathy's eyes were huge and she clapped her hand over her mouth. Why of all times did she have to resort to profanity now?

Oh right. Because there was raw egg splattered all over Dr. Lecter's nice , probably expensive suit. 'Shit' was pretty damn accurate.

That, at least, was enough to break her temporary horrified paralysis. "I'm sorry!" she squeaked, leaping forward with a napkin to maybe try to blot the egg off. "Ohmigosh, Dr. Lecter, I'm so super-sorry! I didn't mean to--!"

Hannibal stopped the napkin short and picked off as much of the egg as he could, dropping it to the counter. "If you had intended that, you would be looking at several detentions and paying for this jacket," he told her sternly. "Perhaps you should pay better attention to this class, Ms Li."

"N-no, I would never, I'm so sorry," Kathy stuttered. "I was just started and acted without thinking."

"Please start thinking," Hannibal told her. "And cooking." He had a jacket to get cleaned.

"Yessir," Kathy stuttered. "Sorry, sir. I'll be more careful."

For roughly the next five minutes, at least.

As usual, he's made his own for you to eat while you cook. As also usual, they're probably a bit more complicated.

He's here again this week, and non-snaky!

Well, non-scaly, anyway.

Once he pings in.

Sparkle was so here. Except... not all-here, for what it was worth. He had a business card in his pocket with him, and he was just itching to go lock himself in his room and dial the number and talk to the woman on the other end.

He was kind of making brownies, sure. But mostly he was just stealing frequent glances at the clock.

Was everybody distracted today? Hannibal sighed.

"I should thank you for conducting class last week," he said, nodding politely. "I hadn't anticipated being quite so...indisposed."

Oh, Sparkle wasn't just distracted. He was downright twitchy.

"Hm?" He stole another brief glance at the clock, and then turned a little smile back toward Hannibal. Even that was twitchy. "Oh, yeah. Sure, anytime. Like. People become snakes. It happens."

"Never anywhere else I've lived, but here, apparently so." Hannibal raised an eyebrow at him. "Is everything going well?"

"Yeah, I think so? I mean, probably. Prooobably. I've got to make a phone call tonight, catch this lady's office hours, you know? I'm a bit anxious about that, I guess, but it's, like, there's nothing wrong."

Hopefully it would be very much the opposite, in fact.

"Oh? Something good, I hope," Hannibal prompted.

So help Sparkle, he couldn't help but break into a broad grin. And he'd kick himself later for it, for letting it show just how hopeful he was about this, but right now his heart was full to bursting.

"Yeah, I hope so too," Sparkle agreed. "I might have a lead on a lady who sets older teens up with families? Like, she aged out of the system, because of course she did, nobody adopts people my age. And she doesn't... like... want that to happen to other kids if she can help it, and I'm supposed to call later."

Much later, for the record. Like, a couple of hours from now. But if later could be right this second, Sparkle would be completely okay with that.

... He'd probably even stop skipping from foot to foot!

"That sounds wonderful," Hannibal said, smiling. He patted Sparkle's shoulder. "I hope she can help you. But please try to concentrate on class until then." He gave him an amused and exasperated look. "I won't even berate you about the microwaves."

Sparkle managed a wide-eyed innocent look, at that.

"It was the safest option that still involved actually heating something," he replied, trying to pull his attention back to the class at hand. "It was either going to be that, or the edible cookie dough? And I decided to walk on the wild side with, you know, heat sources that turn themselves off when they're done."

"Fire is a disadvantage if you're falling asleep," Hannibal allowed. "I'll grant it shows initiative, even if I don't approve of the things." He shook his head.

"And speaking of things I don't approve of," and that exasperated look was back, "yes, Mr. Starsmore and I are in a relationship now. I would appreciate it if you and your friend Cecil would stop making a fuss on the radio about it."

"Ah---heh." At least his twitchiness meant that he wasn't giving a victory whoop and throwing an arm in the air? That would be forward progress, for Sparkle. "Little too much, huh?"

But come on, you had to admit it was awesome. They had so called it.

Well, they had had inside information.

"Just a little, yes." Hannibal shook his head. "There is hearing people gossip about you, and then there is hearing that gossip on the island's radio station."

"In my own admittedly very limited defense," Sparkle said, "the radio station usually doesn't broadcast anything but gossip."

It was sad because it was true.

"Like, yesterday, the squirrels handed me so many notes about masturbation."

And Sparkle had read them all.

"But I'll tone it down, sure."

It was unfortunately very true, yes.

Hannibal shook his head. "Some people need to learn how to better distract squirrels." It was a solitary pursuit for a reason! "However, I thank you."

"Shiny things and rum, right?" Sparkle chuckled a little.

And stole another nervous glance at the clock.

"But yeah, I'll lay off the shoutouts on the radio. I'll talk to Cecil and ask him to do the same."

"Much appreciated." Hannibal nudged Sparkle's attention back toward his cooking. "Brownies now, phone call later. Though you must let me know how it goes."

"Will do," Sparkle chirped, firing off a sloppy salute before looking back down at the... whole lot of nothing much that he'd managed to measure out so far. "Yeah. I'll talk to you first chance I get, once I have news."

Yeah. He'd totally remember he said that.

Now I want brownies.
