The students had been warned ahead of time with an e-mail to meet at the causeway instead of the classroom. When they got there, they would find Hannibal and a portal, and through the portal a Land Rover Range Rover Sport with three rows.

Hannibal ushered them all through the portal before explaining. "In my experience, these weeks are very bad for concentration, which means a very bad time for dealing with heat and sharp objects. Because of this, and because a bit of time away from the island can only help, we will be having a field trip today." He waved them toward the vehicle. "Shortest people in the back, please."

As he drove, Hannibal explained. "When you mention baking, one of the first things people will think of is cakes. They're a common baked good, and like the mochi last week, can be made simple or more complex. Today we will be visiting a commercial bakery that specializes in cakes. We will have a tour, and then your class today will be taught by their bakers and artists." Which would involve no pollen, and no students dealing with heat or knives.

"I was gonna see if you wanted to go to a club sometime this week with me and Minako and maybe a few other people, but I'm not sure I'm ready to handle your level of party," Kathy said, giving him another dubious look.

That... was prompting Sparkle's pouty face. It was a tired pouty face, but it was certainly pouty.

"Gimme maybe a day or two to maybe sleep this off? That sounds like fun." A beat. "In Baltimore, right?"

Another beat.

"Can you run what club you go to by me first?"

There was one he wanted to veto on account of almost being murdered in a back room there, if that was okay?

Maybe she didn't want to handle Sparkle's level of party after all.

At least, not his level of party when he was hanging out with Force-users!

"Probably in Baltimore. Unless we decide we wanna go, like, to a club in LA or something." With portals, they could literally go wherever they wanted to, but odds were high they'd choose to stay on Earth, at least. "And, yeah, if you'd like? I still have to talk it over with Minako, but there are a couple of all-ages dance clubs not too far from the Causeway."

Because not everyone had fake IDs, Sparkle.

Pffft, wimps.

"Oh." Sparkle was quiet for a moment. "Yeah, those should be okay."

Carry on, Kathy, with your 'obeying the law' and your 'not almost dying every time you go out on the town.'

Which was funny, considering she was the costumed vigilante of the pair.

"You still look pretty wrecked," Kathy said, shaking her head. "Like you're going to topple over any minute. You wanna borrow my shoulder? You're probably less likely to stick to me than a freezing window."

Sparkle was trying really, really hard to not look totally pathetic right now. And he was kind of failing at it. A lot. He nodded, just a tiny bit. He'd been on Nar Shaddaa long enough that most of the pollen was out of his system, and what wasn't gone was pretty easy to ignore given the exhaustion he was feeling right now.

Besides, he was still so not into Kathy like that.

"Yeah. Yeah, the window kind of sucks for that," he admitted.

Theirs was an entirely platonic friendship and Kathy was completely all right with that. It was nice to have one of those this week--even if she had spent longer than she would have liked admiring his butt in his pants at the dance.

But nothing killed a libido like knowing that someone was just categorically not into you.

"Come here," she said, lowering her shoulder a bit so Sparkle could relax more comfortably on her shoulder. "Try not to skewer me with your hair is all I ask, okay?"

Beat.

"And when we get back to the island, take a shower."

THIS WAS LOVE, SPARKLE. BESTIE PLATONIC LOVE.

"I plan on showering forever," Sparkle promised, leaning sideways and he was even going to try not to drool. "I hate smelling like ass and Hutt and whatever the hell else. This is gross."

It wasn't too bad. But there was a mild funk happening there. He wouldn't deny that.

If it had been major funk, Kathy wouldn't have offered her shoulder. There were limits to platonic bestie love.

"Sometime, you'll have to tell me why you were hanging out in ass-smelling huts," she told him. "You need better hobbies."

Which...she wasn't exactly wrong.

She... was remarkably close. Ish.

"Yeah, maybe just not during class," Sparkle murmured. "S'not good class words. Thing."

He was pretty damn tired.

"Not to mention you can barely make any words at all," Kathy said. "Shh. Go back to sleep. When you wake up, there will be cupcakes."

Sparkle gave an exhausted little nod and closed his eyes.

"Yeah... yeah. Thanks. G'night."

It was going to be a really short nap. But a much-needed one.
