Baking: Sweet and Savory | Monday, 3rd period

The students had been warned ahead of time with an e-mail to meet at the causeway instead of the classroom. When they got there, they would find Hannibal and a portal, and through the portal a Land Rover Range Rover Sport with three rows.

Hannibal ushered them all through the portal before explaining. "In my experience, these weeks are very bad for concentration, which means a very bad time for dealing with heat and sharp objects. Because of this, and because a bit of time away from the island can only help, we will be having a field trip today." He waved them toward the vehicle. "Shortest people in the back, please."

As he drove, Hannibal explained. "When you mention baking, one of the first things people will think of is cakes. They're a common baked good, and like the mochi last week, can be made simple or more complex. Today we will be visiting a commercial bakery that specializes in cakes. We will have a tour, and then your class today will be taught by their bakers and artists." Which would involve no pollen, and no students dealing with heat or knives.

Sparkle's portal from Nar Shaddaa opened up a few minutes before he was supposed to meet on the Causeway for class anyway, so he just sort of killed his time waiting there, mulling around smelling of cigarette smoke and pacing anxiously.

It had been a pretty fun night followed by a pretty crazy morning, and once he was actually in the car, he was just passing the hell out. Vehicles that maintained contact with the ground at all times were his favourite.

Wake him once they got to the bakery.

So long as he stayed awake long enough to hear Hannibal's explanation, Sparkle could sleep all he liked. Hannibal was going to eye him curiously, though.

That was either 'not on your life,' or 'fuck off' in Sparklese. It was sort of hard to tell, what with the way he was trying to become one, face-first, with the rental car window.

Welcome to Charm City Cakes (http://www.charmcitycakes.com/)! It's a fairly warehouse-looking space, but filled with baking paraphernalia. You'll get to see the various equipment and things and meet the staff. You can also buy things at their store if you're so inclined.

The tour was actually pretty neat. Sparkle was kind of throwing himself into looking at stuff with a reckless abandon, which meant that by the end of the tour he was also reminding himself that all of the shit he'd picked up on the walk around the shop, he was going to probably have to actually pay for.

He'd probably miss something or other somewhere in there, but he made a big enough purchase that they probably wouldn't think to check.

He... had no idea what the hell he was going to do with this many measuring scoops, though.

Anything Sparkle neglected to pay for, Hannibal would just steal back and put where it belonged, or pay for it himself. He liked to keep professional relationships with people. And Sparkle wasn't exactly at his best today.

This was better than a tour--this was a tour with tastings. Not only were they away from the island for awhile, but Kathy also got to try a ton of delicious cake flavors.

"Can I have a little more of the Blackberry Sour Cream?" she asked. "That's stuff is amazing."

If she bought a whole box of cupcakes, maybe she could sublimate desire into stuffing her face back on the island. It was worth a shot, anyway.

As the students sat for the class, Hannibal addressed them for a minute. "The bakery has graciously consented to repeat a class of theirs today, so you will all be learning to make glittery cupcakes (http://www.charmcitycakes.com/events/2015/02/28/glitter-glam-cupcakes). In case you need a use for glitter." It wasn't like they didn't have enough of it. "Enjoy."

Cosette (as she often was) had been away for the weekend, and was wondering why everything seemed a little bit odd on the island today.

She had been, anyway, and then there were glittery cupcakes and she promptly forgot to be confused and vaguely perturbed. Because sparkly.

Soooo, it turns out that was exactly what Sparkle needed to throw himself into, right now. Rainbow glitter cupcakes with airbrushing and animal print, and they were completely fucking ridiculous.

It took a lot of self-control to keep from painting dicks on them instead of leopard spots, but Sparkle persevered.

Yup, Kathy was going to make as many of these as she could and bring them back home to the island. Then anytime she found herself distracted by a classmate (or a teacher. Or, heaven help her, a random person in town), she was going to eat one of them and try not to think about...whatever she'd been thinking about.

...She'd be lucky if these cupcakes lasted until Tuesday.

Sparkle was here! He was actually here, even though he'd seriously contemplated not coming to class at all today, but the promise of a field trip to keep him off the island for a couple more hours was too tempting for him to turn down.

He was kind of quiet anyway. But there were neat cakes and things, so he was quiet with distractions.

"I could sleep for about a month," Sparkle mumbled, because if he was mumbling, he wasn't whining. Nobody liked a whiner. "I haven't done that yet. Don't wanna hurry back to the island, though."
