Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The man caught Kaylin's eye. Something about him made her skin itch, but she wasn't sure what. And, not being particularly blessed with tact, discretion, or, well, anything else that might keep her out of trouble, she naturally made her way over to him.

"Who are you? I'm Kaylin Neya."

That got her a bit of a raised eyebrow, but Bob wasn't about to throw stones in his glass house about being blunt. "Hrothbert of Bainbridge. Bob if you like. Are you a student here, Ms Neya?"

"Not by choice, but yes," Kaylin said with a wrinkle of her nose. "Are you sure it's okay to call you Bob? If you have a title and all shouldn't I call you that?"

"Not a title," he corrected, "just a descriptor rather than a surname. The last boy I taught started calling me Bob, and it's rather stuck with me. Besides, if I say it's okay, who's going to argue?"

"True," Kaylin said. "What would you say after all? 'I told her to call me Bob and she did'? Wouldn't be very effective. All right then, Bob. And you can call me Kaylin because I probably won't always respond to Ms. Neya."

It had only been her name for a little over a year now. The Kaylin part she was used to, the other not so much.

"Kaylin, then." Bob smiled and nodded. "A pleasure, I'm sure. Have you been a student here long?"

"Most teachers don't think it's a pleasure," she admitted. "I've been here since, I think they call it May. Spring sometime. It's not as bad here as I thought it would be."

"How bad did you think it would be?" Bob asked. "If the teachers back home didn't like you, wouldn't somewhere else be an improvement?"

Hey, if she was going to be blunt, so would he. He could do the whole tactful thing, but sometimes blunt was faster.

"I thought it would be like being sent to one of the hells to be away from the Hawks and my home," she said. "I only came because they threatened me."

Kaylin shrugged. "Some of the stuff here isn't too bad." Some was actually pretty nice. "But it doesn't mean I'm going to be a good student here. Mostly I think learning stuff is dumb - unless you can do something with it. Like learning all the laws of Elantra. Or learning to speak and read all the languages. But the history of magical relations?"

She made a rude noise. "How will that help me be a Hawk?"

"That depends, I suppose. What is a Hawk?" Bob asked. "I'm guessing you don't mean the mid-sized bird of prey."

She grinned at him. "No, not the bird, though some of them - the Aerians - do have wings. But the Hawks are like the police here."

"I see." Bob nodded. "In that case, I suppose knowing the history of magical relations could help you determine the underlying problem, if different groups with a history of disagreements come to blows."

"Oh no, they never let me get involved with those sort of things," Kaylin said quickly. "I'm not diplomatic enough. I tend to just piss everyone off."

Bob laughed. "Well then. I'll remember not to recommend you for any delegations." He smiled at her. "What are your classes?"

Kaylin laughed. "Good!"

It took a minute for her to remember what she'd been notified about. "I'll be taking Ethics - whatever that is - Creative Problem Solving, Poisons, BS - again no idea - and something about Embracing the Real You."

She made a face. "Stupid, right?"

Bob made a face. "Yes, well, Ethics is one of those necessary but dull ones. I'm not sure about the last. The others sound like fun, though. BS is the art of lying," he explained.

They were both doing well in the make-a-face sweepstakes because here came another one from Kaylin. "If even a teacher thinks Ethics is boring I'll probably wish I was dead the whole time."

"Lying?" she said and this time she looked more uncertain. "I'm really bad at that. Marcus and Teela always say that you can see everything on my face."

"You could probably use a class in it, then," Bob pointed out. "And trust me - I am dead, and I still think Ethics is boring."

This was why you'd ended up in your skull, Bob.

"You're dead?" Kaylin said, surprise evident in her expression. "You... look very good for a dead man."

"Thank you, Kaylin." Bob grinned. "Long dead, I'm afraid." He held a hand out as if to shake.

She put her hand not gingerly, not knowing how the hand of a dead man would feel. "Oh... I... I hope it was a good death?"

Mostly it would tingle and feel unsettlingly odd as her hand went right through his.

"An axe to the back of the skull." Bob shrugged. "It was quick, at any rate." After that, not so much.

Kaylin pulled her hand back slowly and rubbed at it. "That was weird," she said with her customary lack of subtlelty.

"I don't think an axe to the back of my head would be my preferred method of death, but I guess if it was fast... Dying in your sleep would be good, but kind of boring. Though boring might be better than really painful."

"So I'm told." Bob grinned. "Sorry; I couldn't resist. My friend Harry will actually make me get out of the way instead of walking through me." It was adorable. "And, well - honestly, I'd prefer to have died in my sleep, but since that wasn't an option, at least it was swift."

Kaylin made a face at him, then laughed. "I can actually see where it's pretty funny. So, if I just tell you to get out of the way, would you?"

She thought for a moment. "I suppose if I had to choose I'd choose in my sleep too. Maybe. Or dying to save children or something. That would be good too. More painful, but good."
