Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"All right. Give me a moment." Bob chewed his lip as he thought. "What about 'churl'? I was always rather fond of that one. Nowadays it's quite tame, but a thousand years ago?" He gave her a shocked expression. "That was the worst!"

"Churl?" She said it a few times, sounding it out. "I like it. What does it mean?"

"In this sense?" Bob shrugged. "someone rude and coarse, the lowest of the low.Say that to a noble, and..." He gave her a shocked and outraged face.

Kaylin giggled. She couldn't help herself. "If I said that to a noble in my world they'd be sure I was saying something even worse than that!"

"Yes, but they wouldn't know, would they?" Bob made a thoughtful face. "Then again, nobles don't often need an excuse to get shirty."

"I don't know what that means," Kaylin admitted, "but they can sure get upset over anything."

"Irritable," Bob said, both answer and agreement. "Why let anything pass when you could make someone else miserable for it? I've known a few good ones, but a lot more like that."

She nodded with a smile. "Exactly. And since I'm not exactly the most tactful of people, they generally don't like me so much."

"Good," Bob said approvingly. "They need someone to remind them of their stupidity occasionally."

That got a giggle out of her. "Maybe, but it sure makes my sergeant mad!"

Bob grinned. "That just means you need more practice."

Bob was probably not the best role model here.

And there was more giggling. "Oh, Teela would like you! Marcus would not be happy, though."

Teela was not the best role model either.

"Friends of yours back home?" Bob asked.

"Teela is my friend," Kaylin explained. "Marcus is my sergeant."

"Oh, well." Bob shrugged. "Sergeants don't like anyone. I think it's a job requirement."

"He doesn't like the nobles, either," Kaylin admitted. "But he's actually a very nice person. His roar is worse than his bite. I think."

"His roar?" Bob asked. "His bark we'd say here," he explained.

Kaylin looked puzzled. "No. His roar. He's a Leontine. Kind of like... a people version of one of your lions. He roars, trust me."

"Ah, I see!" Bob grinned. "Fascinating. And I guess he would be rather intimidating, wouldn't he?"

"Oh yes!" Kaylin agreed with a grin. "He sure can be!"

"So leontines are lion-like, and aerians have wings - what other races have you got? What are barrani?" Bob asked.

"Barrani and tall and immortal and they have long dark hair and they're all perfect and the same." Kayla looked up at him. "No, seriously. They are. The only way I could tell Tain from the others with the Hawks was because he had a chip in one tooth. I'm a little better now, but it's hard."

"There are humans, of course, and the Tha'alani." She turned her head and spit on the ground. "They have antenna and they can steal your thoughts and your everything right out of your head."

Kaylin might have some issues with the Tha'alani.

"Not a favourite, I take it." Bob smirked at the understatement. "Does everybody hate them, or just you?"

"Everyone smart should," Kaylin said bitterly. "Most humans are afraid of them."

"What do they do?" Bob asked. "I mean, they can steal your thoughts, but do they? Do they blackmail people or embarrass them at parties?"
