Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You're dead?" Kaylin said, surprise evident in her expression. "You... look very good for a dead man."

"Thank you, Kaylin." Bob grinned. "Long dead, I'm afraid." He held a hand out as if to shake.

She put her hand not gingerly, not knowing how the hand of a dead man would feel. "Oh... I... I hope it was a good death?"

Mostly it would tingle and feel unsettlingly odd as her hand went right through his.

"An axe to the back of the skull." Bob shrugged. "It was quick, at any rate." After that, not so much.

Kaylin pulled her hand back slowly and rubbed at it. "That was weird," she said with her customary lack of subtlelty.

"I don't think an axe to the back of my head would be my preferred method of death, but I guess if it was fast... Dying in your sleep would be good, but kind of boring. Though boring might be better than really painful."

"So I'm told." Bob grinned. "Sorry; I couldn't resist. My friend Harry will actually make me get out of the way instead of walking through me." It was adorable. "And, well - honestly, I'd prefer to have died in my sleep, but since that wasn't an option, at least it was swift."

Kaylin made a face at him, then laughed. "I can actually see where it's pretty funny. So, if I just tell you to get out of the way, would you?"

She thought for a moment. "I suppose if I had to choose I'd choose in my sleep too. Maybe. Or dying to save children or something. That would be good too. More painful, but good."

"It's hysterical," Bob confided. "You know that little dance people do trying to get around each other, when they both keep moving the same way?" He demonstrated. "He even does that. But yes, to answer your question. Unless I felt it very important to stop you, I would move. Then you'd have to decide if going through me was worth the trouble."

Oh, lord. Another do-gooder. Bob frowned. "I do hope you're not planning on having to save any children any time soon." You still were a child, though Bob knew teenagers well enough not to say that.

She giggled at his little demonstration. "I'd like to see that sometime."

"What sort of thing might make you feel you had to stop me?" she asked curiously. "And I've already saved children. And I work with the midwives to save more when I can and I help out at the Foundling Hall when I'm home."

Neither of those places was where she got the bruise on her face or the limp, but that was another story entirely. And Kaylin hadn't been a child in quite some time. Not since -

Not since the really bad thing had happened that sent her fleeing from the only home she ever knew. And the bad things that had happened after.

"Yes, but those types of saving have apparently not killed you," Bob pointed out. "And rushing out to get yourself killed might be a time I'd feel I had to stop you." He shook his head. "Not that I actually expect it to stop anyone; it's more a case of slowing them down enough to make them think first."

"I'm... not always good about the stopping to think part," Kaylin admitted slowly. "Maybe making me slow down would't always be such a bad thing."

Not that she would feel that way in the moment, of course.

"Oo, I could stand to learn a few new words. I'll teach you some old ones, if you like," Bob answered gleefully. "The best part is you can sound completely innocent - educated, even - and nobody knows what you're saying."

Bob, don't corrupt the students.

"Really?" Her whole face lit up. "I can teach you to swear in Barrani and Leontine and Aerian and you can teach me new ones! I learned a bunch from Atton when I took a class with him, not that I think he knew."
nuclear_snide: (sly)

Bob chuckled. "Sometimes those are the best. I can teach you...let's see." He ticked them off on his fingers. "Latin, Greek, several eras of English and French, some slightly older German, Spanish, and Italian, and I'll have to see if I can remember the Welsh and Arabic I used to know. It's been some time since I used them."

Like, since the Celts and Moors were big.

Bob laughed. "Should we start now, or would you rather come by my office some time? As soon as I have one, that is."
notamascot: (Happy)

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-01-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe... tell me a good one now and then I'll come to your office another day to learn more?" That sounded like a good plan, because after all, there was still food to eat today.
nuclear_snide: (shocked)

"All right. Give me a moment." Bob chewed his lip as he thought. "What about 'churl'? I was always rather fond of that one. Nowadays it's quite tame, but a thousand years ago?" He gave her a shocked expression. "That was the worst!"
notamascot: (Pensive)

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-01-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Churl?" She said it a few times, sounding it out. "I like it. What does it mean?"

[personal profile] nuclear_snide 2015-01-09 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"In this sense?" Bob shrugged. "someone rude and coarse, the lowest of the low.Say that to a noble, and..." He gave her a shocked and outraged face.
notamascot: (Happy)

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-01-10 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Kaylin giggled. She couldn't help herself. "If I said that to a noble in my world they'd be sure I was saying something even worse than that!"
nuclear_snide: (you think so?)

[personal profile] nuclear_snide 2015-01-10 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, but they wouldn't know, would they?" Bob made a thoughtful face. "Then again, nobles don't often need an excuse to get shirty."

"I don't know what that means," Kaylin admitted, "but they can sure get upset over anything."
