Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

By now Amy was beginning to get overwhelmed with all the socializing and introductions, and it only showed on her face a lot.

She decided now was the time to help herself to food - a lot of it - in the hopes that having her mouth full would stave off unwanted social contact. It wasn't the kind of thing Karma or Shane would let her get away with if they were around, but then again they didn't have access to this much free coconut shrimp.

Too bad the face-stuffing reminded some people of their best friends, so at least on this one occasion, it just drew more social interaction. She could blame Ava.

"Goodness, did they starve you where you were before?" Ezra noted in a lightly amused tone, with a smile.

Amy swallowed the bite of shrimp she was still working on. "It's actually a quality of food thing?" she explained when her mouth wasn't full anymore. "I'm from Texas, so there are only really three or four things people can make really well. Shrimp that was in an ocean during my lifetime? Totally new to me."

Her mouth quirked up in what was part of the way to a smile. "Hi, I'm Amy."

"Ezra," he replied, nodding. "Hello, Amy." And he smiled again –– okay, he hadn't actually stopped. It came naturally like breathing. "Apart from appreciation of east coast seafood, can I ask for your first impression of this place?"

"Pretty weird," she said at once. "Not awful, though. People seem nice."

She couldn't help smiling back. His smile made it hard not to, and he seemed like a direct enough guy, which made conversation easier.

"How about you? Are you new too? I don't think I saw you on the bus."

"I wasn't on it," Ezra replied easily. "I had private transportation." Where he had thoroughly annoyed his driver the entire way over, everyone could rest assured. "Did I miss anything? A flat tire? An amusing singalong?"

"There was a teacher whose face was on fire," Amy offered. "And a girl who waved a sword at everyone. I'm guessing she's a theater kid."

Which basically amounted to: "You didn't miss much."

Some might have considered it alarming how normal both of those things sounded to Ezra. But normal was really relative, that wasn't his fault.

"Doesn't sound like it, no," he agreed. "And besides, you're here now, so I'm already making up for all the actually important things I missed."

Oh, and now you'd gone and made her blush, Ezra. Thanks for that.

"Wh - me?" Yes, obviously. "Oh, um, you know, I think the guy who was on fire was actually higher up there, importance-wise."

Guess who had never been casually flirted with before!

"You also missed a girl who had never seen cell phones before," she added. "That was weird."

"Well, hipsters do the darndest things." Because that would somehow excuse not having seen a cellphone, sure. "And I've seen people on fire before."

Since his best friend tended to make that happen.

"No, I think my scale of importance was exactly right."

"Really good," Amy said with a vigorous nod as she thrust the plate in his direction. "Just the right balance of sweet and crunchy. Help yourself-- I allocated thinking they were going to run out, but now I'm starting to think the food supply is limitless."

Anders took one, hesitated, then took a second, swirling each n the dipping sauce before adding them to his plate.

"It is, or close enough," he confirmed. "At least, I've been here eight months and I've never seen them run out. Maker knows what they do with the extra."

He took a careful bite of the first shrimp. "Oh this isgood," he said, barely remembering to swallow before he did.

"I know, right?" Amy was prepared to stay on the East Coast forever if it meant food like this. "It's not like I'm coming from a food shortage or anything back home, but this is all a little... wow."

She took pleasure in imagining Lauren's reaction to the vast array of empty calories.

"I'm Amy, by the way," she added, realizing she hadn't covered that yet. "Sorry, most human manners probably encourage introducing yourself before offering to share food with someone."

"Anders," Anders said, surreptitiously adding a third shrimp to his plate. "Nice to meet you. And don't worry about manners. We're all terrible at them."

He was joking. Kind of. But Fandom did seem to encourage a certain amount of getting straight to the point that wasn't always expected at home.

"Where are you coming from, Amy?"

"I'm from Texas," she said, briefly affecting the more exaggerated Texas drawl that she usuallly reserved for when she was imitating her mother. "The land of cacti and aggressive freedom. Are you British?"

She guessed it could explain the clothes, but she would have expected someone British to be more of a stickler for etiquette.

"Fereldan," Anders answered, marking what the girl had said about Texas down as something to ask about another time. "Don't worry if you haven't heard of it, it's -- you've gotten the 'different realities' speech by now, haven't you?"

"A few times now," Amy assured him wryly. "Then I'm guessing you've never heard of Texas. That Cassandra girl hadn't either. Just trust me, it's pretty underwhelming. Lots of closed-minded people with lots of guns and bad ideas."

That was Amy putting it generously.

"What's Ferelden like?"

"Lots of closed-minded people with lots of dogs and mud," Anders shrugged. "I think if I ever took anyone home, they'd be surprised how underwhelming a place with darkspawn and such could be."

He slanted his eyes toward the Seeker girl. "Is that the girl in armor's name? Cassandra?"

"You know, I'd put money on that theory," Amy said slowly. "I keep starting to believe things that are really, really not the kind of thing I'd usually describe as credible."

And then she remembered that she was a cynic and immediately became immensely fed up with everything that was going on. Whatever was going on.

"Some hot guy just made his hand burn," Anna reported. "And my sister is here, but she's, um. She's not my sister. My sister's back home. She's an entirely different person who is also my sister and thinks I'm her sister and there's something about universes paralleling ... something. Does that ... even make sense?"

Had there been some kind of hallucinogen at the lounge? Was she actually wandering in circles at a perfectly nice boarding school in Corona, talking to like trees and branches? Because that seemed like a way more logical answer, right now.

"I guess in a sci-fi kind of way?" Amy tried. "Like she's from the past or something and she doesn't know you're going to wind up coming here yet? But then your sister back home would have remembered being here, right?"

All this was starting to give Amy a headache. She shook her head.

"She looks like your sister but she doesn't remember you coming here, and your actual sister is still back home," she summarized. "That is seriously fucked up."

Again with the potty mouth!

"I don't know which of us is in the past and which is in the future," Anna admitted. "Or if it split off somewhere and my past is supposed to be her future, but things changed, and the timeline got messed up?"

Anna shook her head. "That does sound seriously -- whatever you just said."

Her big sibling was Barry Ween. She'd probably be swearing like a champ inside the month.

Amy rubbed her forehead. This was why she didn't watch science fiction movies.

"Well, however it happened, at least there's good news," Amy offered. "It's seriously hard to ignore a sibling when you go to the same school. Trust me, I've tried. So you might end up getting your quality time after all."
