Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hannibal was sipping from his own thermos cup and leaning on one of the tables to watch everybody. It was always interesting to see the new people.

Kaylin saw Hannibal watching and waved her sandwich at him. "I'm eating, I swear. See?"

He couldn't possibly know that this was the first real thing she'd eaten in the better part of two days, right? How much weight could she have lost over the break anyway? Maybe the bruise and the limb would distract him.

They might, just a little. "So I see." He gestured at the bruise. "Have you had your injuries seen to?"

Her hand went to her face. Not the one with the sandwich, obviously. "It's just a bruise. Training went really well."

It did, seriously. The sergeant had even told her she wasn't a complete waste of skin and eyeballs this time!

You were getting a Look for that, Kaylin, but Hannibal wouldn't press. About that or the weight loss. Much.

"Did you enjoy your time at home?"

She grinned at him. "The sergeant said I did good. Well, he said I wasn't terrible, but from him that's pretty high praise. And I told some of Warren's stories to the children at the Foundling Hall and helped at a bad birth and both the mom and baby are doing fine. And did I tell you the sergeant said I did good?"

What was a bruise on the face and a limp compared to that?

Hannibal smiled. "That sounds like a very good holiday. I'm pleased for you. How is your leg?"

"Oh, it's got a good gash in it, but I'm sure it will be fine," she said easily. "I zigged when I should have zagged."

"And now you know to zag next time." Hannibal nodded. "Well, I'm sure you know the signs of infection, so be careful."

"If it gets red lines or pus or the skin starts turning black, that's bad," Kaylin agreed.

"You should probably go to the clinic before the skin turns black," Hannibal advised.

"Yeah, yeah, that's what they always say," Kaylin grumbled, but secretly - or maybe even not so secretly - she was pleased. "I'll make sure I keep it clean and watch it and all that stuff."

Hannibal shook his head, smiling, and offered her another sandwich.

"Actually," she said, biting the edge of her lip. "I thought maybe I'd have some of that pie next. If that's okay?"

"Have anything you like, so long as you're eating." Hannibal waved her at the pie.

That got a grin and a qiuck grab for a piece of the raspberry pie. With whipped cream.

"I've had a craving since I got back for something sweet," she explained. "But I was good and ate a sandwich first."

Only because she saw it first, but hey!

"It's always good to eat a bit first. And you should be in good company - I think several of the people are here mostly for the food."

Kaylin gave him an odd look. "They aren't all here mostly for the food? I mean, except you, of course, but you're a teacher and so you need to come see the new people and, well, I always like seeing you, so it's good you're here. But, you know..." She gestured towards the tables. "Food."

Hannibal laughed. "I like to think at least some of them are here to meet the new students. Or the new to meet the old. But there is a reason the school provides the food, after all."

"I suppose," Kaylin said. "And some of them seem nice enough. But the food's really why I come."

"And you're certainly not alone," Hannibal answered, smiling.

He didn't; he brought his own. But Kaylin was still probably in good company.

"And I usually see you here and I like that," she admitted. "I mean, I could just show up at your house or something, but that just seems kind of rude."

"It's a pleasure to see you, too," Hannibal answered, smiling.

"My home is always open to students and friends, but if you come without calling first, I may not be there. Do you have a phone yet?"

"I do," she said with a smile. "One of the smart ones - not that I understand a lot of what it does."

She pulled it from her pocket and showed him. "The man tried to sell me a thing for around it with sparkly things on it, but I told him that was ridiculous."

"Here." Hannibal took out his own phone and switched to the contacts. "This is my number." He doubted she had kept her old syllabus. "Now you can call if you'd like to visit. Not that it should stop you if you need something and can't call."
